A video tour of some of my work in Tangible Fragments, on view @casalethbridge until Oct 23. “The art object is merely a mirror, giving a glimpse that is also a shadow of what was once real, present, concrete.” bell hooks (Subversive Beauty: new models of contestation, 1995) Care as an offering can transmute us. What it requires from us is tedious, tender, arduous, and any other number of adjectives that combine both exhaustion and diligence or love and frustration. The bare intimacy of the person being cared for runs up against the capacity of care givers and their community to tend to them. In that clash of needs and capacity exists a raw experience of what it means to be human. What it means to love. Tangible Fragments as a body of work grew out of craft processes that parallel/mirror the process and profundity of care work; material qualities tracing shifts of relational transformation. Metabolized through making, different aspects of the caregiving experience became echoed in the material. Equal parts comforting and violent, the action of giving care requires both a puncturing, (a fiery transforming of cells), as much as it does a recovery, (a careful loving handling). Felt works required agitation and entanglement, washing, rubbing, needling, patience, repetition, slow consistent building and shaping, no short cuts but many variations/paths towards a desired outcome. Ceramic handbuilding asks for a hand touch sensibility, calibrated pressure and careful handling. Atmospheric firing, needs constant and consistent attention and tending, fired in a proverbial black box of known inputs and hoped for results with ultimately unknown reactions, similar to the body’s reaction to medical treatment and care; hopeful but prone to failure. These processes locate care in the accumulation of small, repeated acts of attention, adjustment, persistence, and response. Art objects as traces of loving labour repeating motifs of the same; hands in caring action, bodies in need of it, identities changed in the exchange. #ceramicart #feltartist #craft # #medaltaresidency

A little throwback to our first ever TIME Society table! We had so much fun at the Coaldale Fall Community Registration event, getting to finally bring out our banner, tablecloth and official TIME shirts! We also had a little community art project where everyone could draw themselves on our canvas (kindly donated by @casalethbridge - thank you so much). What started at our table continued at The Hub in Coaldale for the following weeks... and we loved seeing people of all ages add their own little touch. A big thank you to the @coaldaleab and @fcss_2025 for letting us be part of the event and for giving our canvas a home at The Hub! We loved seeing our community come together, one little drawing at a time 🥰

This new piece brings together a myriad of layers, textures and colours that depict the very real and complex feeling of betrayal. As you can see, there were many layers and hours put into this piece and like this human emotion, it is complex, intertwined and not easy to decipher. I realize this is a hard emotion to sit with, but we have all had moments of betrayal or broken trust. I represent this feeling with the appearance of a gorge or divide that separates a human relationship. But just as bridges can be built to cross the distance over a gorge or river, so too can relationships find a place of healing. This piece along with others will be showcased at CASA next spring as part of my Life Sojourn Series - an exploration of human emotion and life experiences. Walking in an Indigenous fashion show on my own homelands meant so much to me. 🖤 Having my mom there for the very first fashion show she’s ever attended made it even more special. I’ll admit, I was shy and nervous because she was watching. 😂 Put me in front of strangers and I’m fine! I may have felt like I didn’t give it my all, but having her there is a moment I’ll cherish forever. ❤️ And getting to wear Native Diva Creations made this moment even more special. 🖤✨ Show host @casalethbridge part of their Art Days Designer @nativedivacreations Hair and makeup @catwalksalonspa

Last week Vicki and Sophia travelled south to Medicine Hat and Lethbridge! The schedule was packed with tours, meetups, and attending presentations, as well as giving one of our own! It was lovely connecting with old members and meeting new ones! Neither of us had been to Medicine Hat before, and we can't wait to go back! Perhaps you have put it together already. 👀... The next AMAAS conference will be held in Medicine Hat, and we could not be more excited!!! June 2027 We began our time in Medicine Hat with a generous tour of the Esplanade led by TREX Southeast curator Sierra Zukowski, where later that evening Canada Council Liaison Consultant Michelle Schultz gave a presentation. There we happened to bump into the new residency cohort at Medalta! The following day we toured the Monarch movie theater, originally constructed in 1911. In 2023 a group of rotarians purchased the building, and significant renovations began! Janessa showed us every corner of the theater, from the projection room to the old film incinerator in the basement. We even got to see the original "silver screen"! Rumor has it that the Monarch's marquee will be restored in time for the 2027 AMAAS conference! We made our way to Medalta, where we attended artist talks followed by a tour of Medalta's museum, art gallery, production studio, kilns, and artist residency! Thank you, April, Leandra, Katherine, Sarah, and Tomo! That evening past board member and PULP Digital Creators founder Jim Kuehn had us speak at their creators' fall meetup on the beautiful rooftop terrace of the Esplanade. The weather was iffy, but the mood was warm! Our trip continued in Lethbridge, where we met with past board member James Phelan at the U of L. Huge thanks to Christa, Baz, Erin, and Megan for showing us around the studios/spaces available to the Media Studies students. We will be back in Lethbridge in the spring to meet current students and alumni at their annual Vibe Fest! Our last stop was the DigiArts festival at CASA! It was great to support and witness this celebration of art, culture, fashion, and digital arts!
