New series. WHY I BOUGHT IT.

I spend an enormous amount of my life looking at art. But what actually makes it onto my own walls (and stays there) is a different question.

So I thought I’d start showing you.

First up: Casey Moore, whose work I very nearly missed because when he first approached me, I said no.

Thank god I looked again.

I bought this photograph because it makes me notice the world differently. I genuinely look at blossom differently because of Casey. And every time I walk past this work in my house, it reminds me that spring comes back. Seasons change. Things die and grow again. And somehow we get to be here for it.

That’s a pretty extraordinary thing for a photograph to do.

And perhaps this series can also prove that collecting art doesn’t have to be intimidating, wildly expensive or reserved for people who already know what they’re doing.

I’ll show you what I’ve bought, why I bought it, and where you can find the artists.

At the end of 2025 my eldest son Luca and I set off for the northernmost tip of Aotearoa. Whilst he added some muscle for moving around with my large Swiss camera and its paraphernalia, he was very much joining me on a journey of discovery. We have spent years exploring the South Island so heading North from Auckland was new for us.

Northland gave us far more than a backdrop or a place to gather specimens. We swam in the Waipoua river and camped overnight near the mighty Tāne Mahuta and Te Matua Ngahere in the kauri forest and the journey became something deeper. We drove on, ferried across the Hokianga Harbour and up all the way past 90 mile beach to Cape Reinga and Spirits Bay.

Gathering plants and setting them up in front of the camera, shielding against the wind, I began to feel the place itself coming through the lens as much as the specimens. Each piece of it that I captured carries the character of this part of Aotearoa with its own particular energy.

At the end of last year my eldest son Luca @luca_a_moore and I set off for the northernmost tip of New Zealand on a photo expedition, Passing through ancient Kauri forests and catching epic views on our way to Spirits Bay, a place sacred to Maori, who regard it as the departure point for the spirits of the dead. We collected specimens and dined on tinned food under the stars. Having spent a lot of time photographing in Fiordland in the south of NZ this was a chance to explore completely different flora. Pulling the trusty 5x7” around (on the ground in the last picture) felt a bit much at times but I never regret printing from the huge negatives in the darkroom.
