An Ode to Marie - Today I am thankful. Some swells are good, and others are exceptional. This Hurricane Marie was an exceptional swell. I had the pleasure of capturing my good friend, @chrisbluthardt get a very memorable wave, I saw smiles and heard stories of other memorable sessions. The storm was far enough away from baja to cause harm, but close enough to the Socal bight to deliver the goods. It kept the whole coastline fed, and sent some of the best waves I’ve ever seen in my life. Rain squalls kept the weather interesting, however people still wearing boardshorts… stiff offshore winds all afternoon in September, and if you knew where to look you were rewarded. I remember Marie OG 2014, I remember thinking nothing will come close to that swell, and although this was not quite as big, I enjoyed it equally. Maybe theres something about that name, maybe she likes sending gifts. As a surfer you pray for days like these, patiently waiting for months and years, spending too much money traveling and chasing, but this time it was right in our backyard. Im sharing this for the wave enthusiasts and for the memory bank, because today I am thankful. This was (even though you’re still spinning off the coast in the pacific somewhere) an unforgettable weekend, an unforgettable swell. 🥲 P.S. The last two videos are of first point at 6:13am, first light. I have been surfing for 24 years religiously, and never have I seen such great waves grace this coastline in person. It was 10ft, perfect offshore, barreling, and cleaned the entire lineup… no one caught them. It made more sense that way. I am tired, my eyes are bloodshot, aches all around, I am content. 12 years until Marie comes around again. ❤️ by @caseyrutherford_
