Some tips to keep in mind when you are surfing the beach breaks this week:

1️⃣ Speed is your friend. Don’t want to hang out too far and too long on the bottom, especially during the lower tides.

2️⃣ Use the current and the swell direction to your advantage. Go left! You’re gonna go faster and the wave face is gonna be open longer. Rights are still an option, but they’re gonna be tighter, going against the grain of the current and you’re gonna be turning into the oncoming left.

3️⃣ Keep your eyes on wind swell. Those are gonna be the indicators for crossing up the south swell lines and giving shape to the waves.

Thirty seconds is a funny thing.

It doesn’t show the months of rewriting. Or almost convincing myself to shoot it digitally because 16mm felt too expensive, too risky, too ambitious.

It doesn’t show directing while stepping in front of the camera. Or having our lead fly in from Australia knowing there wouldn’t be a second chance. No playback. No reshoots. Just trust.

It also doesn’t show what made any of it possible: building a team that was mostly women and non-binary filmmakers. I’ve never felt so supported, so cared for, or so trusted on a set. They carried this film with so much talent, generosity, and heart.

All you see is a few beautiful days in Malibu.

Maybe that’s the point. Dreams rarely feel like dreams while you’re living them. Most of the time they just feel like showing up, trusting the people beside you, and choosing to make it happen.

I’m really glad we did.
