It was an honour to be invited to make an audio-visual set at @listengallery for their listening biennial back in August ✨

The piece centred around the element ‘air’ and consisted of a mash up of archival and personally recorded footage and audio, live flute/ whistle and kinetic sculptures designed to create shadows and scatter light 🌬️🌪️🛫🗣️🔊🦋🐦‍⬛🍃🌞

Massive thanks to @samarshavir for help putting together the mechanics of the remote controlled mobile and @eddy.draws_ for sewing together the massive and very useful projection screen and to @cat.linand for the fab documentation 🚀🌞🧡

And a special thanks to the amazing folk behind @listengallery for being so accommodating and in general for creating such a welcoming, supportive and nurturing community based environment, Glasgow is v lucky to have you guys 🧡💙🧡 taken in Glasgow, United Kingdom by @cashamack

I’m excited to be playing a wee solo set @vitanovaparty ‘s 1st bday this Sat, upstairs at McNeils!

I’ll be blending flute, whistle, synth, beats and field recordings. The set will be driven by rhythm, evolving from a meditative soundscape into something that you can move to!

It would be lovely to see some familiar faces! 🌞 taken in Govanhill by @cashamack

Our final artist taking place in Gaelic Futurisms is Cashlin MacKenzie. Her installation for this exhibition ‘Lusan airson Leigheas / Plants for Healing’ draws on Gaelic oral traditions and archival field recordings from the School of Scottish Studies. The work focuses on two closely related plants — Slàn lus (Narrowleaf Plantain, “health plant”) and Goc Phàdraig (Broadleaf Plantain, “(St) Patrick’s Tap”) — often overlooked as common weeds, yet long used in traditional Gaelic medicine for their powerful healing properties.

At the heart of the installation are large-scale video projections of microscopic footage of these plants, shown alongside their contemporary pharmaceutical equivalents. Through this work, MacKenzie explores the boundaries between modernity and utility, reflecting on the commodification of health and the erosion of community subsistence and ecological cohesion.

Cashlin MacKenzie is a Gaelic-speaking artist based in Scotland, working across film, installation, sound, and performance. A graduate of The Glasgow School of Art, her practice examines ecology and the intersections of nature, capitalism, and the human psyche. She often works from multiple perspectives — micro to macro, human to non-human — using time and light to uncover hidden narratives.
Recent works include the short film Tha Smeòrach sa Mhadainn Chiùin / There is a Song Thrush in the Morning (Scottish Landscape Awards 2025) and the Radiophrenia 2025 audio commission Tobraichean mo Shinnsirean / The Wells of my Ancestors. by @cashamack

[SOLD OUT] èisd (aysht) is a two part project exploring the act of listening through and with Gaelic. Across two events bringing together artists and archives, èisd invites audiences to tune into the textures, rhythms, and histories of Gàidhlig as a living sound practice. Through discussions, performances, and collective listening, the project listens to language as a way of connecting to place, memory, and relation.

The first event is with Cashlin Mackenzie @cashamack and Susannah Stark @earlywater88 for an evening of live sound performance and discussion between the artists about their practices with Gaelic archives and culture.

Tuesday 21st October 6-8pm
Tea and vegan meal provided.

Thank you to Jude Ershead @judeesdesign for the beautiful poster

Listen Gallery is so honoured to work with these artists and give audiences the opportunity to learn more about indigenous Scottish Gaelic practices, experiences of language learning, song writing and translation as creative inspiration.

This project was kindly supported by Glasgow life.
