NOTES FROM CASTING // 006

A small piece of advice for real people making self-tapes for on screen opportunities.

If you can, try not to treat it like a job interview…

When I’m casting people to appear on screen as themselves, I’m not measuring you on how polished, serious or professional you can be. I’m trying to get a sense of who you are and what you’re like.

Every brief is different, and some subjects are obviously more serious than others, but generally warmth, openness and genuine engagement go much further than formality.

- Let yourself laugh if something is funny.
- Let yourself smile if you’re excited when you introduce yourself.
- Let your genuine enthusiasm show if you really care about something.
- Don’t worry about the odd pause, imperfect sentence or random bit of personality coming through, they’re sometimes the best bits of a tape!

Authenticity is the thing!

A self-tape doesn’t need to prove you can perform being the right person.

It should help us see who you are and why you want to be there.

LONDON CASTING 📣

We’re looking for fun, warm and lively families and couples in and around London for a brilliant paid celebrity-led shoot later this month!

We want to hear from real households with big personalities who’d be up for having some fun on camera with our presenter. Only one adult from your household needs to take part, so don’t worry if your partner or the rest of the family aren’t available for filming.

No TV or filming experience needed. We’re looking for brilliant real people who are happy to get involved and be themselves.

No acting experience needed. We’re looking for real personality. Fun, confident, curious young people who’ll chat, react, get competitive and properly throw themselves into the challenges.

CASTING NOW: LEGO + STAR WARS ⭐️

Okay, this is a fun one! If you can, please share this with your community or send it to anyone who might be excited to apply. ❤️

We’re searching for a brilliant US-accented host/presenter based in the UK for a new LEGO YouTube entertainment series, with the first episodes set in the world of Star Wars.

We’re looking for someone with a cool older-sibling energy. Naturally funny, quick-witted, playful and curious. Someone who can confidently guide an experience while also stirring up a little mischief.

You’ll need to be comfortable working from structured beats, reacting in the moment and improvising naturally. We’re looking for genuine wit and personality rather than big, high-energy “presenter” performance.

You should:

• Be UK-based with a genuine US accent
• Have a playing age of approximately 18–25
• Have previous presenting, hosting or comparable on-camera experience
• Be confident taking direction on set
• Be naturally funny, reactive and comfortable improvising
• Be available to film on 24th September

A genuine interest in LEGO, Star Wars, science, engineering, making or how things work would be a huge bonus.

Filming: 1 day in London, 24th September
Fee: £2,500 including 2-year worldwide digital/online usage across LEGO-owned channels, including YouTube.

CASTING IN EINDHOVEN 🇳🇱

(If you know anyone who lives in the Netherlands, please could you kindly tag them and help me spread the word out there 🙏🏼)

We’re making a documentary about everyday working life in Eindhoven, and we’re looking for real people living in the city to take part.

We’d love to hear from people who live and work in Eindhoven and have a relatively short, easy commute. Maybe you walk or cycle to work, take public transport just a few stops, or even pop home for lunch sometimes.

Your job could be almost anything. You might work in hospitality, retail, healthcare, a warehouse, an office, a coffee shop, a hotel, a pharmacy, a contact centre, or somewhere completely different.

We’re particularly interested in hearing from people from immigrant communities living and working in Eindhoven, but the casting is open to everyone.

You don’t need to be an actor or have any experience on camera. Quite the opposite! We’re looking for real people who are happy to let us into a little bit of their ordinary working day.

Filming: One day in the last week of September
Fee: $750 USD, with travel and food covered on the day

NOTES FROM CASTING // 005

Usually, Notes from Casting is me sharing with you.

This week, I want to turn it around.

What do you wish that casting directors knew, or did differently?

Maybe there’s something about the process that makes you anxious.

Something you’ve never understood.

Something you wish was done differently.

Something that would make putting yourself forward feel a little easier.

Or perhaps there’s something you’ve always wanted to ask, but never really known who to ask.

I want to hear it.

One of the reasons I started Notes from Casting was to make this process feel a little less mysterious.

Casting shouldn’t feel like a closed door with everyone else standing on the other side trying to work out what’s happening. If I can empower you even a little bit on this journey, then I’ll be happy with that.

So, this one’s yours.

Increasingly, we’re being asked to find real people with something to say.

People with opinions. Experiences. Expertise. Stories. Different perspectives on the world around them.

Sometimes that means a slot on live television. Sometimes it’s a roundtable discussion. Sometimes a documentary, an advert or a project built around a particular subject or experience.

You don’t need to be a presenter.

You don’t need media experience.

You just need to be willing to talk. To share what you know.

So I want to know more about you.

What do you care about? What have you experienced? What do you know inside out? What could you bring to a conversation that somebody else couldn’t?

We can only think of you if we know you’re out there.

So tell us.

And if someone immediately comes to mind, send them our way.
