Painter (my paintbrush has gone in my coffee cup more times than I’d like to admit)
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I wanted to share “The Sphinx” again because it feels like the mood of it is in the air on this overcast damp Virginia fall day. It’s my interpretation of Edgar Allen Poe’s short story “The Sphinx”. It’s still available @havengallery if you’re interested and it’s a rare gallery painting for me because I actually painted human into it! I love this one and had a lot of fun figuring out how a deathmask hawkmoth would wear a dapper vest and cravat. If you’re interested in it and want to know more, send the gallery an email at info@havengallery.com. Either way I hope you all are able to enjoy this spooky season.

In my spare time I’m continuing to play with learning to making things that move. I have lots of scraps of mdf around from cutting panels for my paintings so I thought a bird mobile would be a fun project to try out. With Fall being in the air I can’t help but think of ravens which also made me think of Edgar Allen Poe. Poe grew up here in Richmond so this is a wee ode to him and his haunting poem “The Raven.” It took some troubleshooting for me to figure how to make an Edgar riding a raven mobile. The concept is pretty simple but the reality of getting the angles of the wings and the balance just right was harder and took longer than I thought. Nonetheless for having no idea what I was doing I’m pretty darned excited with how he turned out. Tomorrow will be Poe’s 177th anniversary of his death so the unintentional timing of finishing this seems right. Also what was fun was I had everything thing I needed to make him from stuff I had around except the eyelets.

Opening tomorrow at Arch Enemy Arts in the group show “Imaginary Menagerie 7”Alectryon is a young soldier and friend of Ares (the God war) who was assigned with the task of guarding Ares’ door while he was having an affair with Aphrodite. Unfortunately one night Alectryon fell asleep and Helios (the god of the Sun) was able to see Ares and Aphrodite together. Helios then went and told Hephaestus (God of artisans, blacksmiths, carpenters, and craftsmen)and Aphrodite’s husband, which got Ares in trouble, so out of anger Ares turned Alectryon into a rooster. In Alectryon’s effort to make up for falling asleep on the job, he never skipped alarming people to Helios’ arrival with dawn. Hence why rooster crow when the sun rises. The preview goes out today at 2pm, send Lawren an email at info@archenemyarts.com to get on the preview list if you’re interested. @archenemyarts #imaginarymenagerie7 #archenemyarts #roosters #timelapsepainting #greekmythologyart by @cassandralkim

Here’s my mini animal portrait collection now up in the Mini Museum at @rlsart I painted 13 different animals that can be found in South Carolina inspired by actual miniature portraits that can be seen up the street from the gallery at The Gibbes Museum of Art. When I was visiting Charleston last April I learned that Gibbes has over 600 American miniature portraits in their collection and they were so fun to look through, I knew I had to do my own spin on them. Each of my paintings are 3.25in. round and they are framed in little vintage brass frames from the 1950s/60s. There are still some left if you’re interested, head over to Robert Lange Studio’s website to adopt one yourself! #miniportraits #rlsarts #minimuseum #animalportraits #thegibbesmuseum by @cassandralkim

“Lord and Lady Mutualism” acrylic and oil on panel in a vintage frame 15in.x19in. (Available)
This painting is opened last Thursday, September 3rd at @moderneden in a group show call “New Beginning” about exploring hope and the future. For inspiration I looked to Jane Goodall and she says “We can work together to make the world a better place…” this is a part of a longer quote I can give you later, but reading this made me look to nature and think of mutualism. Mutualism is an interaction between 2 or more different species where every individual benefits from the relationship. Zebras and Ostriches have a mutualistic relationship (I didn’t know about this) zebras have good ears and eyes and ostriches have a great sense of smell. They often work together combining their senses to alert each other to predators. Looking at relationships like these give me hope for our world. I hope we can be inspired to look at each other and see how working together will make us all stronger and better united. The show is open in San Francisco and a wonderful collection if you’re near by you should check it out, otherwise it’s available to view online at www.modernedengallery.com

Opening today at @poetictigergallery in the group show “Illuminated Fauna” is “Portrait of a Young Meerkat”
Originally when I found a cool diamond shaped frame I started this painting with the intention of it being a Saiga Antelope. I did a good sketch before I started the piece all my normal process, alas, it just wasn’t meant to be. As I started to work on it, I realized the diamond shape and the shape of the antelope were fighting each too much, so I pivoted mid-painting and decided a meerkat was a better fit. I will get back to a Saiga antelope and paint another one soon, they are a really cool animal- but this one was meant to a meerkat. Meerkat fun fact: did you know the dark patches of fur around their eyes act as built-in sunglasses and help protect their eyes from the glare of the sun. #poetictigergallery #illuminatedfauna #meerkat #artprocessvideo by @cassandralkim

Opening tomorrow @archenemyarts in the group show “Spectrum VII” (the preview comes out today)
I wanted to paint a green sloth because I thought they looked cute, but before I did I asked the question to myself- why does their hair turn green? I was pretty sure it was algae that grew, but was that a good thing? After some research I was fascinated to learn about the mutualistic relationship of algae and sloth. Sloths provides the habitat for the algae to thrive in and the algae provides the best defense for the sloths against predators in the form of camouflage. Fun fact: Sloths hair have microcracks in it that make for the perfect environment for algae and fungi to grow. Scientists have found that there are some species of algae and fungi that only grow on sloths AND some of these strains of fungi species are being studied by scientists and they are finding possible uses for treatment for malaria and even breast cancer. Long story long, green sloths are cool. #spectrum7 #archenemyarts #slothlove #greencolor by @cassandralkim

Coming to the Mini Museum at @rlsart is my group of animal portraits inspired by mini portraits at The Gibbes Museum in Charleston. Back in April, Robert and Megan (the definition of hospitality) welcomed me and my family to stay at the gallery for my kids Spring Break. We had the best time! One of the many wonderful things we did while there was visit The Gibbes, and it was there that I learned they have the country’s largest miniature portrait collection. Which inspired me to paint up a group of South Carolina animals based on portraits that can be found at the museum just up the street from the gallery. If you’re in or around Charleston the opening is September 4th alongside the amazing group show “Interlace” you should go check it out! @thegibbesmuseum #rlsarts #miniportrait #scdnr #thegibbesmuseum by @cassandralkim
