October is domestic violence awareness month. I grew up in a house where love and fear were mixed together, and it left marks on me that I learned to hide. I remember the yelling, the slamming doors, and the silence that followed. As a child, who witnessed domestic violence, I carried scars that didn’t show on the surface. I grew up too fast, forced to be fearful before I even understood what safety should feel like. I learn patterns of silence and survival when what I, and every child deserves, is love and stability. As long as I wasn’t seen, I was safe. For a long time, I stayed quiet. I told myself it wasn’t “that bad,” or that somehow it was my fault. But the truth is, abuse is never the victim’s fault. Love is not supposed to hurt. Real love does not make you feel afraid. What many don’t realize is that abuse doesn’t just affect the person being hurt, it changes the entire home. It shapes the way children see themselves, the way they trust others, and the way they believe love is supposed to look. For me, it took years to understand that what I saw growing up wasn’t normal, and it wasn’t love. Healing hasn’t been easy, but I learned that the past does not define my future. I am allowed to break the cycle. I am allowed to choose peace, love, and safety. To anybody who knows the pain of growing up around domestic violence: you are not alone. Statistics say that 1 in 3 women and 1 and 4 men experience domestic violence. You are not broken. you are worthy of a life free from fear. You can break the cycle. It doesn’t define you, Jesus does.

Rachel. I can’t even explain in words the amount of gratitude I have for the 8 months we spent together in room 211. What a beautiful roommate I had. I have grown to admire who you are: kind, loving, funny, goofy, godly, and a person I can lean on through everything. Every single memory we have together is flooding back as i’m sitting here writing this at 2 in the morning. God knew we needed eachother this year, and I am beyond grateful that he gave you to be my best friend and roommate. Even though we didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into at the beginning of the year, and even though I probably annoyed you so much, we still were definitely made for each other, and I can’t thank God enough for this year. I miss you already, and I can’t wait to see you again. From going to French Park, or going around and around the McDonald’s drive through, or even our both cries because of what we were going through or tears because of laughter at 3 in the morning, you have been one of the big reasons I made it through this year. i love you lots,
