Amsterdam’s Jordaan, Noord, Hortus Botanicus, and Stadsdriehoek of Rotterdam - sorry no dancing house features

Absolutely lucked out with the weather when I visited the Netherlands last summer and I hope to visit this vibrant city again! Captured in some of these photographs, especially the boathouses and bike-lined canals are iconic symbols of Amsterdam’s culture and its history. I joined a city walking tour the afternoon I arrived in ams recommended by a friend and it was a great way to understand the the city as a changing landscape! Would recommend ⭐️

Guess where!

As many of you might have known, I went on a semester of exchange in Singapore last year and I finally got to processing these photographs. It was truly a period of time in my life where I will often look back on for the fondest memories, thanks Singapore! 🇸🇬❤️

As for the Gardens by the Bay by @grantassocs I remember seeing this project online years ago and was absolutely stunned by its scale. The above features the Cloud Forest and a glimpse of the Dragonfly Lake as you enter the gardens from Marina Bay Sands. Amongst the incredible landscape and iconic architecture, what stood out to me was the programming that made this place alive. From sustainability tours and daily light shows to Lunar New Year celebrations to interactive movie promotions, GBTB really creates a place that welcomes everyone to experience the world.

Designed by Foster + Partners and Heatherwick Studio, the Bund Finance Centre connects Shanghai’s Old Town and new financial district. This landmark building is home to Fosun Foundation that celebrates traditional Chinese arts and serve as a place of heritage exchange. On Heatherwick’s website, they showed the process of determining the form and material of the 675 magnesium alloy tassels (referencing traditional Chinese bridal headdress). I highly recommend looking through their process photos!!

I had walked from the Yuyuan and the building revealed itself amongst other pieces of impressive architecture. Although I did not get to go inside, I sat outside in the public plaza where a pet market took place and just simply admire at how Chinese heritage was weaved in so seamlessly into the landscape.

Finally some classical Chinese garden photos on this account!

These were taken in Yuyan 豫园, a classical Chinese garden located in Shanghai’s Huangpu district. I had spent around two hours walking through and trying to capture some moments but I don’t think any of these photographs does it justice. I visited the garden at the beginning of January this year so the crowd was very manageable.

I remember learning about Yuyan back in first year of BLA, so to visit Yuyuan in real life almost felt surreal. I hope to visit more classical Chinese gardens in the future, making it a goal to be back in Shanghai.

As part of the BLA program, students can choose one of the 3 options of internship, international exchange or additional UofG credits in their sixth semester. This week features the second option where Catherine shares her time abroad at the National University of Singapore 🇸🇬!

Hey everyone! My name is Catherine and I am excited to share my exchange experience in Singapore with you today!

I am taking an equivalent of 2.0 UofG credits here at the National University of Singapore, and they are Landscape Architecture Studio, Changing Landscapes of Singapore, as well as Urban Greening Technologies and Techniques. I came to Singapore with the goal of studying landscape architecture in a different perspective so I chose to take courses that are closely related to the Guelph curriculum! I can say that I thoroughly enjoy learning about LA in an entirely new environment.

Other than attending my classes I have been exploring the different parts of Singapore, urban green spaces (so many great examples of them!!!), hawker centres - similar to food courts with a wide variety of cuisines, and of course the tourist attractions.

Singapore is located in Southeast Asia which makes it quite easy to travel to the other SEA countries. Over the past two months, I had the chance to travel to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and three cities in Vietnam with friends that I made on exchange!

I cannot believe how fast time is passing by because in less than two months I will be returning to Canada, so I am definitely trying to make the most out of it! I do not regret any of my decisions I have made when it comes to choosing to go on exchange, truly a once in a life time experience!
