Happy 75th Birthday to my Mom! Mary Ladner keeps it real when things get tough, and loves us all unconditionally. She is always up for a puzzle, a card game (really, any game), a laugh, a cocktail or glass of wine, a project, or a road trip—the list could go on and on. Thank you Mom for loving us so fiercely. We all feel it, every single day. I hope you feel that love coming right back at you. Happy, happy Birthday. ❤️🥳 by @catherinemiles

Serge Hochar would have been 85 today. It’s been ten years next month since his passing. He was my biggest mentor & one of my biggest champions. He pushed me. He made me a better wine taster & a better listener. He showed me just how important the art of slowness can be. He was never in a rush. My circle of great humans expanded after landing in NY because of Serge. He was one of kind and I am so lucky I got to spend countless hours learning from him and the Hochar family. Happy Birthday dearest Serge, we sure do miss you down here. by @catherinemiles

⁣Happiest of Birthdays to our co-founder, 𝑪𝒂𝒕 𝑴𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒔! 💓🍾⠀
⠀
Cat and June met in 2008 when June had no idea what to do with her life but she knew it had to have wine in it. Cat was the VP of a wine importer and already a season vet in this mad mad world of booze at the time and took June under her wing to show her the import side of the business.⠀
⠀
⠀
While June ultimately decided that the restaurant side of the industry was her passion, their friendship continued to grow and they went on to collaborate and work with each other throughout their careers. One of those collaborations turned into 𝒋𝒖𝒏𝒆’𝒔 𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒆́ and the picture above is from Austria when they made their first of the wine! ⠀
⠀
Cheers to Cat, friendship, women helping women, and drinking great juice!⠀

A prompt on the rituals of drink, from the generous, gracious, lovely @catherinemiles 🥂

Prompt 120. The Cup Runneth Over
I think a lot about what we drink, and how, and why. This is partly because beverages are my business—I’m a wine importer—but I suspect it goes deeper than that. I think about morning coffee and afternoon tea as much as wine in the evening. I think about the way these drinks mark our days and our lives.

I still recall my first cup of coffee after my first child was born. I’ve always loved coffee, but when I was pregnant, I got to a point where everything tasted awful, coffee included. After my son arrived, I was exhausted, so one day I brewed a pot of coffee, poured it steaming into a mug, and took the first sip. It was magical. It was everything that coffee’s supposed to be: warmth, earthiness, that buzz, waking me up to the wonders of the world.

When my children were young, we had a morning tea ritual, where I’d light a candle and make a pot, then we’d all have a cup while reading a story or having a snack. That ritual has evolved; the kids are teenagers now, and each prefers a different (admittedly fancy) hot drink before school. For my youngest, I make hot chai. I adore the whole process: boiling the water, adding the fragrant loose leaves, steaming the milk, swirling it all together and sprinkling cinnamon on top.

There’s beauty in the ritual of a beverage, in how it slows you down, how it connect you to others. It’s the act of opening the bottle of wine and pouring it into a beautiful glass; it’s infusing honey with lavender to make a sparkling mocktail for a friend who doesn’t drink alcohol.

Other times, it’s more private than that—sometimes, just you and a beverage is enough. Recently my dad was diagnosed with cancer, and I spent the other day at the hospital as he underwent his first round of chemo. After we got back, I sat on the porch by myself with a glass of montepulciano and let my mind wander. It was a chance to settle in and be present—and for the present to be enough.

It’s true. Every word. Love you Polar Babes. “GIVE ME, OH NATURE, YOUR PRIMAL SANITIES!” — Walt Whitman

I hate the cold. I hate the short, brittle days of winter in the Northeast. I fear the dark, long nights ahead of us during a global pandemic. The upcoming election brings me waves of terror. Nearly 50% of my fellow Americans scare the living shit out of me.

Anxiety is everywhere.

How do we stay ALIVE during these challenging times? Really, really, REALLY alive?

Well, here’s how @suleikajaouad and @carmenrradley and @catherinemiles and I are doing it: Every afternoon, we meet on the banks of the Delaware River, strip off our clothes, and jump in. It’s FREEZING cold. The shock of it pierces our minds, stops our hearts, and reboots our nervous systems. Every single time, we think we can’t do it…but then we do it! We leap right into our fear, screaming. And when we come shivering out of the river, we are reborn, vivid, clear, strong, naked, wild — and always laughing.

Nature IS the primal sanity. Fresh water is sacred restoration. Coldness allows for no fuzzy, murky thoughts. And sisterhood is the most ancient cure for a woman’s despair.

For those of you who might ask if we are following the Wim Hoff method...well...not really? It mighta kinda started that way, but we’ve taken our own path and created our own thing here. Something more witchy, more feminine. Our own favorite ways of breathing, our own holy rituals. (Although we do like to shout, in Wim’s fabulous accent: “The watuh is my GOD! The watuh is my LOVAH! The watuh is my ART FORM!!”)

Cat, Suleika, Carmen — I still can’t quite remember how we fell into this crazy but sanity-preserving wildness together, but I’m so grateful that we did! THANK YOU. You are forever my Polar Babes, and we will get through this winter together and bravely. Meet you at the river. ❤️LG by @catherinemiles
