If you were lucky enough to know my mom, you knew how kind, funny, generous and caring she was. You knew she made the best lemon bars and butter mochi and date nut bars. You knew she was highly efficient and organized, tough and empathetic. You knew she cried watching commercials and cheered on any local boy playing in the NFL. You knew how often she laughed. (It was a great laugh!)

My amazing and magical mom passed away on Monday afternoon after more than two years battling lung cancer. In those two years, she also suffered a major stroke and had stents placed in her heart and kidneys. She was cared for by some of the best doctors — Dr. Lauren Oshima, Dr. Herbert Chinn, Dr. Brandon Kai, Dr. Ronald Yanagihara, Dr. Evan Wu, Dr. Daniel Fischberg — and nurses at @straubhealth and @qhshawaii, and the best therapists — Nelson and Jenn — at @rehabhospital. Even when she could barely talk, she always thanked everyone who helped, cared for and visited her. And special thanks to Kayoko Miura and the compassionate staff at Nagomi Foster Homes — a nonprofit! — who cared for my mom in her final days.

It’s been a tough two years for our family, and we appreciate all the love and support we’ve received during this time — the calls, texts, emails, food deliveries, hugs. It has all meant so much to us, my mom especially.

I feel so lost without my mom. She was everything to me. I called her several times a day, sometimes to talk about nothing. She was exactly what I strive to be — only she was so much smarter and more pragmatic than me. Oh, and a way better cook and baker. I’m not even close!

I knew this day would eventually come, and there was really no way to prepare for it. I’m heartbroken 💔 but I also know she’s no longer suffering. She hated being stuck in a bed, not able to work in her kitchen or go shopping at Marukai or play with Landon. She hated not being able to eat. She hated being a burden (though she wasn’t) on others. It wasn’t the way she wanted or deserved to live. Still, we miss her so much.

🚲 GUESS WHO’S RIDING A BIKE 🚲

I’ll be honest: we really slacked on teaching the kid how to ride a bike. He never like those balance bikes and always preferred zooming around on his scooter 🛴

It doesn’t help that we live in a hilly area with parts of our neighborhood without sidewalks. Biking ln Oʻahu can be terrifying!

But lucky for us, @hblridealoha offers BikeEd, a weeklong program in @hidoe808 schools that teaches the fundamentals of bike-riding and safe cycling habits for kids. Since its inception, @bikeedhawaii has reached over 250,000 students statewide, making it a cornerstone of youth cycling education in Hawai‘i.

In just five days, this kid learned how to ride a bike — a feat even he didn’t think possible! And now he’s even doing a six-point safety check before riding 🙌

So proud of this guy — and stoked on @hblridealoha’s program!

⭐️ WORTH THE SPLURGE ⭐️

Born and raised in Hawaiʻi, I pretty much live in my slippers 🏝️ But lately they’ve been hurting my feet. So I started looking for slides that were comfy but not ugly, which is often the case 😆

No surprise, I started seeing posts on Instagram about different slides and slippers. (Our phones are always listening 👀) And I came across @wearmessage footwear. They looked cute — as least on the model’s perfect feet! — so I decided to splurge. NO REGRETS 🙌

Lightweight, springy, molds to your feet. And they are SO COMFORTABLE 💕

And if you know me, I’m no fashionista 😂 No one ever compliments me on the three outfits I wear in rotation 🤪 but lots of people ask me about the slides. Even recently in the hospital (last photo). So I thought I’d share!

They’re pricey — $155 for these Mullen Slides — and it takes awhile for them to arrive. But WORTH IT ⭐️

Surgery isn’t fun — and the recovery part, at least for an impatient person like me — is the worst.

It doesn’t help that I’m a terrible patient. I had my surgery on Tuesday, jumped on work emails that night, baked the next morning and drove the next day. I cannot be contained!!

About the surgery. My mom and sister both had breast cancer, so I’m at a higher risk than the average woman. I’ve had extra breast tissue from my pregnancy that started to ache. After years of checking the area and worrying about it, my doctor said, “Let’s just remove it.” Two years later, that’s what I did.

The tissue will be analyzed. I’m not allowed to jump in the water for weeks. I’m dealing with the pain and uncomfortable swelling. But all is good. Thanks for all of your messages! 📬 Appreciate all of you!

💫 TRIPPIN’ TO FANTASY ISLAND ✈️

We spent the evening at @honolulumag’s Hale ʻĀina Gala at the @kahala_resort — and it was a trip! Literally!

Retro wanderlust vibes, tiki cocktails and tasty bites from Hale ʻAina award-winning restaurants like @4614kapahale @mwrestaurant and @taorminasiciliancuisine 😋

The best past was kicking back on the hotel’s lānai with old friends and listening to throwback jams with glasses of champagne 🥂

Concerts to @honolulumag for another great event and to all the restaurants who won and participated! 🏆

🏕️ OUR ANNUAL CAMPING ADVENTURE CONTINUES 💫

It started with a conversation about fishing 🎣 at our kids’ tennis class five years ago — and we’re still going strong with our annual camping weekend at @campmokuleia 🤙🏼

New families have joined, some can’t always come, but what never changes is the FUN — and @jimmyshoots’s fried rice! 😋

The kids were so young, one still in diapers when we started. We had to put them down for naps and supervise their every move. Now, the oldest is in eighth grade 😳 and the kids are fishing and kayaking on their own. More soccer ⚽️ and kendama, less naps 💤 and sand toys!

And no matter how little we see each other in between, we all fall right back together like no time has passed. Love watching the kids grow up and still love hanging out — and without screens! 🙌 And love spending lazy days with these families. It’s the kind of reset we all need 💕

Find your people! And go camping! 🏕️

🚜 GRAND TOUR AT KAHUKU FARMS 🌱

📍 Kahuku Farms, 56-800 Kamehameha Highway, Kahuku

Any time I’m on Oʻahu’s North Shore, I head to @kahukufarms, a fourth-generation, family-run farm in Kahuku. The cafe is charming, serving farm-fresh pizzas, soups and sandwiches. Plus, it’s the only local farm the grows and processes its own açaí berries to make açaí bowls 🤩 Amazing!

I decided to take my family on the farm’s Grand Tour, a 2-hour tour of both the cafe and commercial farms. It was a fun, educational experience, learning about the challenges of running a farm in Hawaiʻi and sampling all the different fruits and vegetables grown on the property. And all from the back of a tractor-pulled wagon 🚜

Our favorite stop was the cacao grove, where we learned about growing and processing cacao but also samples the farm’s chocolate 🍫 THE BEST!

The cost is $75 for adults, $50 for children, with great discounts for kamaʻāina, seniors anf military.
