I just binge watched all five episodes of Feast or Famine — a series about climate change and how it is affecting our food systems by @chefchriscosentino

I consider myself in tune with this issue and I learned a lot. The series is filmed in the Bay Area (mostly in the North Bay) and there is a lot that has changed in the past 9 1/2 years I’ve been on Oʻahu. I had no idea that it’s been so difficult to get sardines — something we used to see in abundance and I had on my menu all the time as a chef. I didn’t know salmon season has been closed for THREE YEARS! I didn’t know you could now find halibut so small you can cook them whole like you would a branzino or turbot — a fish I used to have to place two cutting boards side by side in order to break down.

Each episode focuses on a different part of the food system (Produce, Meat, Fish, Wine, Restaurants) and how they are being impacted by climate change. Parched soil unable to soak up rain. Grapes burning on the vine from rising temperatures. Overly acidic estuaries. In the Produce episode, Chris poses the tragic question, “How does a farm survive when what your growing is killed by the environment in which its being grown?”

Hawaiʻi sees this often with torrential downpours, like the Kona Low Storms. Entire farms under water, harvests lost. California is battling wildfires on a regular basis now. Chefs in SF are preparing for the next one by signing up to cook now.

We all see costs across the board rising, from the producer to the restaurants to the consumer — no one is immune to it. But if you want to see some examples of how food can be produced in a sustainable way, please watch and share this series. The ranchers, farmers and fishers Chris interviews are true stewards of the land and sea, almost all with a science degree, PhD or expertise that puts them in a position to see and understand what is happening and come up with viable solutions.

I’m sharing this with everyone I know. Please check it out and do the same.

Fishing, catching, cooking, and eating tilapia (is delicious) at @aliifarms @alii.farms ❤️🎣 Bring the family, take your class, have a party! It’s beautiful, outdoors and super tasty!

The tilapia grown at Aliʻi Agriculture Farms provide nutrient rich water for the farm’s ag products, and the fish are sold in downtown Honolulu + people can fish in the three community ponds! New episode about aquaculture and tilapia farming in Hawai’i coming soon! @hawaii_sea_grant @hikanesa @hawaiiaquaculture
