Happy Pancake Day!

Some ideas for enjoying savoury or sweet pancakes: from mushroom, watercress and feta or smashed avocado, smoked paprika, dukha and lemon English savoury pancakes to wholewheat banana and maple syrup or apple and cinnamon American style pancakes for the sweet toothed!

Or, if you are looking to avoid the perils of the ‘flip’ you can always opt for a tray baked pancake with baked peaches and Cointreau cream! Swipe for more images of tasty pancake inspo….

In Volume 19 we featured the beautiful home of Hannah Otto @theottohouse - Hannah lives in a thatched cottage which they’ve spent years renovating, doing a lot of the work themselves. I love what Hannah describes about some of the crazy things they’ve uncovered during the work….

“Our house is full of quirks, many of which we have been trying to correct over the years. For instance, when I started to demolish our shower room, I found a whole shower complete with tiled space and shower head hiding behind the current shower. We also found carpet under the wooden flooring in the living room which was an interesting choice.”

After another long pause over here, I’m back with an invite to a summer studio opening with my lovely friend @bonnie_rasmussen_ceramics 🤍🕊️

I haven’t managed to make any new work lately - because *life* - but will have available lots of prints in different sizes, mostly at greatly reduced prices as I’m hoping to create space for new and beautiful things to come!

I’m working on some miniature prints on my favourite handmade Japanese paper today, ready for a pre-Christmas event in early December with @bonnie_rasmussen_ceramics 🌟 I love seeing prints in miniature - there’s an intimacy to how you interact with them, how you hold them in your hand and peer closely in to the world inside the image.

Anyway, lots of miniature prints together with a few larger ones will be for sale alongside Bonnie’s beautifully serene ceramics, ready for Christmas gifting. Put the dates in your diary - all are very welcome to join us 💫 by @cathy.pyle

These two images are the beginnings of some explorations in which I’m photographing dried flowers and seed heads through diffused sunlight (hello, cloudy days!) to illuminate their delicate forms. I’m not sure where I’m heading with this, but am musing over how in the process of losing their vibrant summer colour these plants take on an elegance and a new clarity all of their own. And in the midst of all the shifts of mid-life in my own life, I’m wondering, are there some lessons for us humans in here?

The magic of immersion in the cool and silken water of the river; the way life’s worries slip off your shoulders as you surrender to the sensation of the cold; the stillness, the laughter; and the lightness you carry into the rest of your day - these are the reasons why I came to love the river, and why I joined thousands of others along with friends from @mentalhealthswims at @marchforwater in London yesterday. Since we started weekly testing for e-coli at our swimming spot back in April with @the_waterrangers @zerocarbonguildford there hasn’t been a single week when the levels have been within accepted levels for bathing. In the autumn woods. Bracken and densely-growing trees; a pleasing curve of branches from the left; the depth of colour in the leaves, lively greens, bright ochres, warm browns - there’s something that speaks to me here. Resisting simplification and clarity; tangled, complex, and at the same time richly textured and coloured: this is something of how life feels for me at the moment, somehow.
