[Link in bio] Published in February 2022 amid Karnataka’s hijab ban protests, this Q&A with Afreen Fatima explored the rollback of religious freedoms in India. The recent rejection of a student’s plea to wear hijab at school in Uttar Pradesh marks the latest chapter in this ongoing dispute. These renewed restrictions should be viewed within a broader backdrop of ongoing anti-Muslim hostility and discrimination. by @caveheraa

Some of my favorite days with @aglfellowship in Malaysia were the days at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC).

📸: @apyfz

Dr. Samar Ali - Professor of law and political science at Vanderbilt - on international relations and cybersecurity.

📸: @apyfz

Gorgeous courtyard at ISTAC. Alhambra-esque in provenance.

Dr. Rania Awaad on her research of Abu Zayd Al-Balkhi’s (9th century) work on cognitive therapies through an Islamic lens.

📸: @apyfz

Dr. Muhammad Syafiq bin Borhanuddin from IKIM on language and worldview, introduction to the works of Syed Naquib Al-Atass, rahimahullah.

I really liked this top I got from a stall in KL East Mall and for the life of me can’t figure out the brand (there’s no brand tag). Regardless, what theyTM say about modest clothes in Malaysia is true taken in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by @caveheraa

Jumuah Mubarakah. Some of the lovely masjid we visited in Melacca and Kuala Lumpur. “Traditional architects and master artisans were inspired to mirror divine activity by designing environments that reflected Unity. They used both ‘aql (intellectual faculties) and ‘ayn al-qalb (the inward eye) to craft spaces that honoured Allah’s created world while guiding us towards reflection.“ -Mohamed El-Gendy taken in Malaysia by @caveheraa

Alhamdullilah one of the highlights in Malaysia was the opportunity to meet and hear from YAB Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He spoke on leadership qualities, and what we can learn from studying our history and cross-national engagement.

We were also able to hear and learn from YB Minister of Higher Education Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir and YB Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek, their vision and advice for future service. The main takeaway across the board: read, read, read, and learn to engage perspectives and stakeholders with principle and humility - advice to incorporate into our work, wherever we may be.

Thank you - JazakAllahu khairan - to the AGL team and everyone involved in facilitating the numerous learning opportunities in Malaysia. May Allah swt strengthen us with the courage to be people of service.

[NEW] Link in bio. This review by Heraa Hashmi reads Ted Chiang’s fantasy/sci-fi story ‘The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate’, set in Baghdad under the Abbasids, through the concept of qadr and repentance. She argues that the story presents a sort of compatibilist vision in which time-traveling is a means of understanding divine decree and human responsibility/atonement together. by @caveheraa

36 hours in Singapore is hardly enough to get a sense of the communities and society here - thankful to the dosts (read: friends) that took us around and explained so much of the history, current climate, technocracy and the like over a meal of satay. We could do to move beyond our insular contexts for the purposes of asking - what are other models of multiculturalism and religious pluralism out there? What works and what doesn’t for Muslims as a minority? And what can be learnt from this? Anyways, highly recommend going to the historic Kampong Gelam district and hit up Wardah Books and the nearby Teh Tarek place taken in Singapore by @caveheraa

📖 THE FAQIH WHO BROUGHT ISLAM TO SICILY | @caveheraa | READ via link in bio or at sacredfootsteps.com

At 70 years old, Asad ibn Furat was no ordinary military commander. A student of Imam Malik and the leading Hanafi jurists of Iraq, he had become chief judge of Ifriqiya and a renowned scholar; and now he was going to lead a force of some 10,000 men 10,000 across the narrow channel from Sousse to Marsala. by @caveheraa

[Link in bio] Alimah Raissa Khalil and Heraa Hashmi write that while Muslims can reduce meat consumption and should oppose animal abuse, they should not adopt vegan/vegetarian ethics that frame all slaughter as inherently immoral or rely on incorrect arguments misrepresenting Islamic exegesis and jurisprudence. They discuss the sunnah, udhiyya/qurbani, and divinely ordained roles, emphasizing that Islamic animal ethics require just treatment, lawful slaughter, and preserving the Eid sacrifice as worship. by @caveheraa

Link in bio to full piece. JazakAllahu khairan @muslimmatters for editing and publishing this. On sexualization, women, and justifications for the war on Iran (but its surface analysis extends to Palestine or any place where the Muslim Question is now primarily about pacing towards a liberal metropole and not the grit of war). by @caveheraa

[Link in bio] Menstruation-related exemptions in worship are a legally coherent feature of fiqh while leaving ample avenues of devotion open. While critiquing misogynistic stigma, Heraa Hashmi also looks at secular-liberal re-readings that collapse worship into personal choice, insisting instead that the metaphysical core of ‘ibadah is obedience, sometimes expressed precisely by refraining. by @caveheraa
