[Link in bio] Published in February 2022 amid Karnataka’s hijab ban protests, this Q&A with Afreen Fatima explored the rollback of religious freedoms in India. The recent rejection of a student’s plea to wear hijab at school in Uttar Pradesh marks the latest chapter in this ongoing dispute. These renewed restrictions should be viewed within a broader backdrop of ongoing anti-Muslim hostility and discrimination.

This review by Heraa Hashmi reads Ted Chiang’s fantasy/sci-fi story ‘The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate’, set in Baghdad under the Abbasids, through the concept of qadr and repentance. She argues that the story presents a sort of compatibilist vision in which time-traveling is a means of understanding divine decree and human responsibility/atonement together.

[Link in bio] Alimah Raissa Khalil and Heraa Hashmi write that while Muslims can reduce meat consumption and should oppose animal abuse, they should not adopt vegan/vegetarian ethics that frame all slaughter as inherently immoral or rely on incorrect arguments misrepresenting Islamic exegesis and jurisprudence. They discuss the sunnah, udhiyya/qurbani, and divinely ordained roles, emphasizing that Islamic animal ethics require just treatment, lawful slaughter, and preserving the Eid sacrifice as worship.

[Link in bio] Menstruation-related exemptions in worship are a legally coherent feature of fiqh while leaving ample avenues of devotion open. While critiquing misogynistic stigma, Heraa Hashmi also looks at secular-liberal re-readings that collapse worship into personal choice, insisting instead that the metaphysical core of ‘ibadah is obedience, sometimes expressed precisely by refraining.

[NEW] Heraa Hashmi’s review of The Light We Lost: Grappling with Shariah in the Modern World presents Mashal Ayobi’s project as a confessional reclamation of “Shariah” from Islamophobic caricature and Muslim squeamishness, insisting that “neutral” modern law is itself a moral formation regime.

[Link in bio] Islamic learning has always depended on a living oral tradition supported (not replaced) by written preservation. Shaykh Amin Kholwadia discusses the development of kalām as a disciplined defense of inherited creed. It then applies a Maturidi epistemological framework to show how theology can ground distinctly Muslim engagement with bioethics and professional ethics in contemporary society.

[NEW] Link in bio. Heraa Hashmi reviews sociologist Dr. Sara Farris’ ‘Feminationalism.’ Farris’ concept of femonationalism is a term to describe how European nationalist, neoliberal, and feminist actors strategically deploy the figure of the oppressed Muslim woman to justify xenophobic agendas and exploit migrant women’s labor.
