Nyika NP & its Blue Swallows.

One of the most magical things about Nyika National Park is the sheer diversity hidden within its vast montane grasslands, forests and marshes.

Among the wildflowers and open valleys, Blue Swallows can be seen sweeping low across the landscape. These beautiful and increasingly rare migrants are one of the many reasons Nyika is such a special place for birding.

One of Africa’s giants.

A big bull Eland, photographed in Nyika National Park, Malawi 🇲🇼

Eland are the largest antelope in Africa, with mature bulls capable of weighing several hundred kilograms, and exceptionally large individuals approaching a tonne.

Despite their size, they’re surprisingly agile and can clear obstacles from a standing start. As bulls mature, their coats become darker and greyer, with a more pronounced dewlap and distinctive forehead tuft.

An incredible animal that deserves a little more attention than it often gets on safari.

Mammals of Nyika National Park, Malawi 🇲🇼

Rolling grasslands, montane forests and some of Malawi’s most impressive wildlife.

Nyika is a little different from the classic African safari landscape. Up here, roan antelope roam the hills, Crawshay’s zebras graze across the plateau, and reedbuck can be found in the grasslands. There’s plenty more to discover, from bushbuck in the woodland to jackals moving through the open country.

It’s a remarkable place to explore with a camera, and there’s still so much to discover across this unique highland landscape.

A few of the mammals of Nyika. 🐾

Species featured:
• Roan antelope
• Reedbuck
• Bushbuck
• Side-striped jackal
• Tree hyrax
• Crawshay’s zebra

Nyika is home to around 85 mammal species, making it a fascinating destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

Bar-tailed Trogon 🇲🇼

A flash of crimson, iridescent blue-green and deep black hidden in the forests of Nyika.

Found in montane forests across parts of central and eastern Africa, the Bar-tailed Trogon is a striking but often elusive bird. It can sit remarkably still in the shade, making it easy to overlook until the light catches that incredible plumage.

One of the challenges of photographing forest birds is finding them in good light, with a clean background and a clear view through the vegetation. When it all comes together, the patience is worth it.

Nyika continues to deliver some special birding moments, and this was certainly one of them.

More than just a drink of water.

On the Nyika Plateau in Malawi, reedbuck and even Roan antelope can be seen submerging their heads to feed on aquatic grasses growing beneath the water’s surface.

But why?

While the surrounding grasslands provide plenty of grazing, underwater vegetation offers a different nutritional mix. Depending on the plant species, it can provide additional minerals such as sodium and calcium, as well as protein to supplement their diet.

These wetlands are more than just watering holes. They offer another food source in an environment dominated by open montane grasslands.

Nyika at sunset.

A reedbuck silhouetted against one of those incredible Nyika skies.

There’s something really special about the scenery here. The vast montane grasslands, open skies and ever-changing light make it feel completely different from anywhere else in Africa I’ve photographed.

Malawi Batis 🇲🇼

I photographed this female Malawi Batis (Batis dimorpha) in the montane forests of Nyika National Park. The orange eye, dark facial mask and rufous throat make this little bird surprisingly distinctive.

Malawi Batis was historically treated as part of the Cape Batis complex, but is now recognised as a separate species by the IOC.

Interestingly, when I tried to record the sighting on BirdLasser, I couldn’t find it. After contacting them, they confirmed the species was missing from their database and have now added Malawi Batis to the South-Central Africa region.

Nyika is an incredible place for birding, with its high-altitude grasslands, montane forests and many specialised species.

Blue Swallow.

This is one of those birds that feels completely different depending on where you see it.

Back in South Africa, seeing a Blue Swallow is a real privilege. They’re incredibly scarce, with fewer than 40 breeding pairs thought to remain in the country.

Here on the Nyika Plateau, it’s a very different story.

I’ve been seeing them almost every day, flying low over the grasslands and dams, often with those ridiculously long tail streamers trailing behind them.

They’re small, incredibly fast and not the easiest birds to photograph in flight, but watching them sweeping over the Nyika reserve has quickly become one of my favourite parts of being here.

It’s a good reminder that rarity can be very much about where you are standing.

There are places you visit… and then there are places that somehow stay with you. Liwonde National Park is exactly that. 🇲🇼

Returning once again to @caws_malawi Mvuu Camp felt wonderfully familiar - a homecoming to one of the most soulful corners of Africa!

There’s something deeply special about Liwonde. The slow, timeless flow of the Shire River. Ancient palms silhouetted against glowing African skies. Elephants wandering quietly through the woodland. Hippos calling from the water as darkness settles over camp. The haunting cry of a fish eagle drifting across the river.

And then there are those golden evenings at Mvuu… when the light softens, the bush seems to exhale, and everything becomes wonderfully still.

It is wild, lush, intimate and utterly beautiful - a place with a gentleness and authenticity that is becoming increasingly rare.

Perhaps that is what I love most about returning here. Liwonde doesn’t need to shout for your attention. Its magic reveals itself slowly, in beautiful moments and small details, until somehow you realise it has found its way under your skin.

Mvuu Camp and Liwonde, you remain very special indeed. 🧡

Until next time, Malawi. The Warm Heart of Africa in every sense.
