A hot afternoon in Liwonde National Park.

A herd of buffalo cooling off and drinking in the midday heat at Liwonde. They’re not always the easiest animals to photograph in the thicket, but around the water there are plenty of moments to catch, from the big bulls to the younger animals moving through the herd.

One of the highlights of photographing here has been the underground hide at Mvuu Lodge & Camp. Being down at water level and completely hidden gives you a very different perspective, and some fantastic opportunities to get close to the action without disturbing the animals.

It was a hot afternoon, but a pretty special sighting.

Elephants at the Waterhole. Liwonde National Park

When the midday heat sets in, the waterhole becomes the place to be. ☀️

A herd of elephants cooling off, drinking, playing and generally making the most of the water. There’s something pretty special about watching these interactions from water level, especially when the little ones get involved.

Nyika NP & its Blue Swallows.

One of the most magical things about Nyika National Park is the sheer diversity hidden within its vast montane grasslands, forests and marshes.

Among the wildflowers and open valleys, Blue Swallows can be seen sweeping low across the landscape. These beautiful and increasingly rare migrants are one of the many reasons Nyika is such a special place for birding.

One of Africa’s giants.

A big bull Eland, photographed in Nyika National Park, Malawi 🇲🇼

Eland are the largest antelope in Africa, with mature bulls capable of weighing several hundred kilograms, and exceptionally large individuals approaching a tonne.

Despite their size, they’re surprisingly agile and can clear obstacles from a standing start. As bulls mature, their coats become darker and greyer, with a more pronounced dewlap and distinctive forehead tuft.

An incredible animal that deserves a little more attention than it often gets on safari.

Mammals of Nyika National Park, Malawi 🇲🇼

Rolling grasslands, montane forests and some of Malawi’s most impressive wildlife.

Nyika is a little different from the classic African safari landscape. Up here, roan antelope roam the hills, Crawshay’s zebras graze across the plateau, and reedbuck can be found in the grasslands. There’s plenty more to discover, from bushbuck in the woodland to jackals moving through the open country.

It’s a remarkable place to explore with a camera, and there’s still so much to discover across this unique highland landscape.

Moustached Tinkerbird.

One of the smaller characters of Nyika’s montane forests, the Moustached Tinkerbird is easy to overlook and almost impossible to photograph.

Nyika National Park offers a very different birding experience from Malawi’s lower-altitude reserves. Its cool montane forests, high-altitude grasslands and unique habitats support a fascinating mix of species, making every outing an opportunity to find something different.

This is what makes birding in Nyika so rewarding.

Bar-tailed Trogon 🇲🇼

A flash of crimson, iridescent blue-green and deep black hidden in the forests of Nyika.

Found in montane forests across parts of central and eastern Africa, the Bar-tailed Trogon is a striking but often elusive bird. It can sit remarkably still in the shade, making it easy to overlook until the light catches that incredible plumage.

One of the challenges of photographing forest birds is finding them in good light, with a clean background and a clear view through the vegetation. When it all comes together, the patience is worth it.

Nyika continues to deliver some special birding moments, and this was certainly one of them.

More than just a drink of water.

On the Nyika Plateau in Malawi, reedbuck and even Roan antelope can be seen submerging their heads to feed on aquatic grasses growing beneath the water’s surface.

But why?

While the surrounding grasslands provide plenty of grazing, underwater vegetation offers a different nutritional mix. Depending on the plant species, it can provide additional minerals such as sodium and calcium, as well as protein to supplement their diet.

These wetlands are more than just watering holes. They offer another food source in an environment dominated by open montane grasslands.

Nyika at sunset.

A reedbuck silhouetted against one of those incredible Nyika skies.

There’s something really special about the scenery here. The vast montane grasslands, open skies and ever-changing light make it feel completely different from anywhere else in Africa I’ve photographed.
