When feelings run high, I can’t paint quietly. They come into the studio before I have words for them. I start making marks. Cover them. Then pull them back. Sometimes I bury the very thing I need to see. Even when something breaks through, I have to decide whether to let it stay. How much of myself am I willing to leave visible? The answer is always there in the paint by @cbancroftr
Looking at this painting, I see the architecture of a relationship. Layers that overlap, interrupt, support, and obscure. Even what has been covered leaves evidence of what came before. Perhaps that’s what remains when someone is gone. Not simply memories, but the ways they shaped us, the parts of them that became part of us. I wasn’t painting a picture of her. I was painting with everything of her that remains in me. by @cbancroftr
When the tempest inside unfolds. I let it. I move with it. I don’t fight it. I let it be, with all its ugly sadness. It moves in ways I cannot fathom. I don’t ask it to make sense. I sit with it. And I honor it. by @cbancroftr
Can your hands find the way before your head does? When I’m stuck, I go to my sketchbook. I stop trying to think my way through it and start physically moving paint—pushing, covering, revealing, responding. Somewhere in that process, I get out of my head and begin to see again. These four emerged from that kind of exploration, all with a limited palette. What do you turn to when you need to find your way back in? by @cbancroftr
This is what struggling looks like Every mark was an effort like wading through waist-deep water I felt awkward and clunky like I was trying to move on square wheels Nothing came easily Nothing flowed And still, I kept making the next mark by @cbancroftr
Water doesn’t ask permission. After torrential rains and tornado warnings I found water on the studio floor, a literal reminder that control has its limits. There was nothing to do but clean up, understand what had happened, repair what needs attention, and move forward. Painting asks much the same of me There are moments when the work refuses the direction I had imagined. A mark shifts the balance. A passage disappears. Something unexpected asserts itself and changes what comes next. The answer isn’t always to correct it. It’s to pay attention. To respond to what is actually there rather than remain attached to what I intended. Perhaps that is the real parallel. We repair what must be repaired. We accept what cannot be undone. We remain open to what the unexpected might reveal. And then we continue by @cbancroftr
Held Yet breaking through Earthbound density Meeting air Something obscured Yet revealing itself Soft Vulnerable Newly exposed There is pressure here Rupture Uncertainty Effort Yet Presence without explanation. by @cbancroftr
Does a painting need to be understood to be true? What if a painting knows before I do? Today I’m sharing one of three paintings I painted in rapid succession It’s changed a lot I’m not sure I fully understand what its saying Maybe I don’t need to by @cbancroftr
While this song ran through my head all day on Saturday, I painted with abandoned. The worry, the concerns, the unknown, the uncertainty all swirling with it. My uncertainty isn’t from my art, it’s from life. Art allows me to express, to give visual words to all that sits within me. I felt a freedom on Saturday that I haven’t felt for some time, two paintings flowed, this is one of two 36” x36” by @cbancroftr
Why I became hyper focused Made missed steps Relying on images adjustments Made off canvas Rather than relying on my intuition Can this be saved? I’m not sure But I’ll work my way through How I paint Intuitively Relying on my vision And not get caught up in my head Go with my frequency And not my fear. by @cbancroftr
Have you ever struggled with a painting? I did. Yesterday I struggled with it emotionally I struggled with it physically Not because of the surface Not because of the paint Because of what was running through my mind For now, these paintings are a timestamp I’ll come back to them another day But today, they simply sit holding something true about where my mind was yesterday. by @cbancroftr
Awkward at first, feeling my way through, color was challenging, felt stiff and forced but slowly my mind and body relaxed and started to flow. Ended here on this pass. I’ll let them sit. Lots of feelings and mood when I walked out of the studio. by @cbancroftr
