Every TSP conference starts with one special day before, mastermind day. We lock in together for a full day addressing all areas of business and giving tailored attention to our clients before the room fills. We usually end these days with a fun activity, we’ve done everything from arcades, bowling, we even had a casino night.

This one was different.

We rented out an entire theater for just US and got the extreme privilege of screening @javierwallace512 ‘s documentary C.B.: Power to The Player @cbthemovie . Honoring the great @cbclaiborne and telling a story we should’ve all learned a long time ago.

If you don’t know this amazing story this film is a must see. I’m grateful Ronnie and I had the chance to share it with our community and also get C.B. In the room to hear from him first hand.

Having one of “the firsts” in the room with us and realizing this was only about 50 years ago was such a clear reminder that we arent as far removed as they want us to believe.

They tell us “that’s the past” “you need to move on”. I see it as an affirmation that yes we’ve come a long way, but we still have a long way to go. In TSP we say We Are The Ones we’ve been waiting for. Nobody is coming to save us, and @cbclaiborne is living proof.

This is a night I won’t ever forget.

C.B. isn’t just a story about basketball, it’s about a young Black man who used education to uplift himself and his community, navigating the civil rights era with resilience and purpose. It’s a story of intellect, activism, and American history.

We’re proud to announce the world premiere of C.B. at the @mvaaff Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival. Tickets available at mvaaff.com!

This powerful 16-minute short highlights education, resilience, and untold history. We’re now raising funds to complete the feature-length version of his story—help us bring it to the world.

If you’re interested in hosting a screening or investing in the feature length version,

Check out the trailer for our short documentary, C.B., a film about Claudius “C.B.” Claiborne (@cbclaiborne ), the first Black basketball player at @dukeuniversity . Not only did C.B. make history on the court, but he also sacrificed playing time to fight for the rights of Black students. As a member of the Afro American Student Association, he played a crucial role in advocating for change on campus.

We are currently submitting to film festivals. Up next is the feature-length documentary, and we’re actively raising funds to bring it to life.

This project was especially meaningful because we collaborated with Duke students during both pre-production and production.

One thing I’m pushing my students to rethink in my Race, Sports & Education: Duke Men’s Basketball course at @dukeuniversity is where we begin the history of Black people and Duke basketball. It doesn’t begin with C.B. Claiborne integrating the program in 1965. @cbthemovie

Before integration, John McLendon, one of the greatest coaches and innovators in basketball history, was coaching just down the road at North Carolina College (@nccueagle ).

McLendon learned the game from its creator, James Naismith, and built highly successful teams in Durham. There’s little doubt that Eddie Cameron and others within Duke basketball knew about McLendon and what he was accomplishing.

Yet his genius existed within a society determined to confine Black people within racist ideas that they were less intelligent, incapable of leadership, and fit to be servants.

McLendon never accepted or surrendered his dignity or his genius.

I want my students to wrestle with that history because the questions it raises about sport, Black intellect, leadership, and opportunity did not disappear with integration.

Black contributions to basketball did not begin when historically white colleges finally allowed Black athletes to play. Black people were already coaching, teaching, strategizing, innovating, and transforming the game. So much of the basketball we watch today carries that history. taken in Durham, North Carolina by @cbthemovie

C.B. Claiborne’s story is bigger than @dukeuniversity . It also belongs to Danville, Virginia, the community that raised him.

The house at 348 Holbrook Street, where C.B. grew up before becoming @dukembb first Black basketball player, is being transformed into the physical home of the Danville Research Center for African American History. The center will preserve genealogical research, historical artifacts and the stories of Black Danville.

When historian Karice “Ressie” Luck-Brimmer purchased the house, she knew it was connected to the Claiborne family but did not yet know that C.B. had grown up there.

That connection was confirmed through our work on @cbthemovie . Ressie served as a historical consultant, and we were able to film part of the documentary inside C.B.’s childhood home.

This is why unearthing and telling C.B.’s story matters. Each new discovery creates another opportunity for his history to educate, inspire and strengthen a community.

Now, the home that helped shape C.B. will help preserve the history of Black Danville. Visitors will also learn that a young Black man who grew up inside those walls went on to break Duke basketball’s color barrier—and helped open the path that ultimately shaped one of the biggest brands in college basketball.

The story continues to reverberate—from Danville to Durham and back home again.

Last week this time we were in @iheartradio studios to talk about @cbthemovie on @wayupwithyee @angelayee and @staceytisdale on @wealthwednesdays

We are on the road to raising $2 million to create the feature-length film on @dukembb first Black athlete, Claudius “C.B.” Claiborne. We will get there!

Still, it’s amazing to see the reach that his story has gotten today. Before we started telling this story, very few people knew about CB’s contributions! It’s beautiful that this story is being elevated getting so much attention! taken in New York City by @cbthemovie

Black Studies did not simply appear. It was fought for by students who demanded an education that reflected their histories, communities, and humanity. This included Athletes like C.B. Claiborne, @dukembb first Black athlete.

He was part of that struggle, demonstrating that the fight for justice extended beyond the court and into the classroom. As such, athletics is deeply not only in @dukeaaas but beyond!

As Black Studies once again faces attacks, C.B.’s reminder is just as relevant today: when institutions refuse to teach our histories, we have a responsibility to educate ourselves—and each other.

Shoutout @wayupwithyee with @staceytisdale and @angelayee for having us on @wealthwednesdays (@funmi_ogunro & @javierwallace512 ) to discuss CB’s contributions and our road to raise $2 million for a feature-length documentary on the pivotal moment in time with one of the best basketball programs in history! taken in New York City by @cbthemovie

Are we asking the right question in the NIL debate?

Much of the conversation focuses on what college athletes are earning.

But are we talking enough about what families have already invested?

Consider this:

• 75% of American children play youth sports. (Aspen Institute)

• American families spend up to $40 billion every year on youth sports. (Aspen Institute)

• 60% of families say youth sports create financial strain. (LendingTree)

• Nearly 1 in 5 families have taken a second job or worked overtime to support their child’s athletic journey. (Harris Poll)

• The average family spends 12 hours every week on their children’s sports activities. (Harris Poll) (Project Play)

As college sports continue to evolve, are we giving enough thought to the sacrifices families make long before a student-athlete ever steps onto a college campus?

In this conversation, filmmaker and Duke educator Javier Wallace, whose documentary tells the story of C.B. Claiborne, Duke’s first Black basketball player, shares his perspective on one of the biggest issues shaping college athletics today.

What’s missing from the NIL debate?

We’d especially love to hear from parents, student-athletes, coaches and fans.
