The first reviewers of the @cbthemovie refused to fund the project because they said it was too ambitious to complete in one year.

I bet on myself and our team!

We did it! We blew it out the water and CB: Power to the Player has traveled far and wide.

Today at Southern Doc Fest part of @southerndocfund was a testament to that bet. I knew this story belonged in the world.

I’m going to keep believing in and betting on myself.

See yall tomorrow at @southerndocfund Southern Doc Fest for a screening of @cbthemovie

We love that this film is being shown at home in Durham. We also love that it’s part pf collection of Southern stories.

Come out and watch this important film. Durham literally wouldn’t be the same without this history. What would @dukembb without Black players? And that began with CB Claiborne!

CB Claiborne believed he would be the best point guard in @dukembb history when he entered @dukeuniversity in 1965. But he was denied the opportunity.

One of the most powerful and discussed parts of @cbthemovie is fleshing out what it meant when CB says Duke’s basketball coaches played him out of his position. Instead of playing the 1, they played at the 3 with guys considerably taller than him.

At the crux of the issue is what’s called racial stacking in sports. More specifically, for Black athletes certain points like ones associated with leadership and intelligence have the hardest to obtain in integrated sports.

Even though Claiborne was the captain of his high school team and National Merit Scholar, at Duke becoming the first Black athlete he was played out of his position.

During my guest lecture in Dr. Hayes’ Black Athlete Activism course at @morehouse1867 we discussed the history of racial stacking in sports. We also discussed what would CB’s playing the 1 at Duke would have signaled to white society.

These conversations continue today. This is one of my favorite speaking topics to place sport within the societal context.

I am available for more speaking opportunities! Please contact me if interested!

In 1965, Claudius “CB” Claiborne broke barriers as Duke’s first Black basketball player, paving the way for generations to follow.

This is his story.

Don’t miss CB: POWER TO THE PLAYER (@cbthemovie), screening as part of @reelsouthdocs Shorts Block at #SouthernDocFest, this Saturday (Oct. 10) at 1 PM at the @durham_arts PSI Theatre in Durham, NC.

Grab a day pass or single event tickets on @eventbrite or in the link in @southerndocfund’s bio!

One thing I’m pushing my students to rethink in my Race, Sports & Education: Duke Men’s Basketball course at @dukeuniversity is where we begin the history of Black people and Duke basketball. It doesn’t begin with C.B. Claiborne integrating the program in 1965. @cbthemovie

Before integration, John McLendon, one of the greatest coaches and innovators in basketball history, was coaching just down the road at North Carolina College (@nccueagle ).

McLendon learned the game from its creator, James Naismith, and built highly successful teams in Durham. There’s little doubt that Eddie Cameron and others within Duke basketball knew about McLendon and what he was accomplishing.

Yet his genius existed within a society determined to confine Black people within racist ideas that they were less intelligent, incapable of leadership, and fit to be servants.

McLendon never accepted or surrendered his dignity or his genius.

I want my students to wrestle with that history because the questions it raises about sport, Black intellect, leadership, and opportunity did not disappear with integration.

Black contributions to basketball did not begin when historically white colleges finally allowed Black athletes to play. Black people were already coaching, teaching, strategizing, innovating, and transforming the game. So much of the basketball we watch today carries that history.

Last week this time we were in @iheartradio studios to talk about @cbthemovie on @wayupwithyee @angelayee and @staceytisdale on @wealthwednesdays

We are on the road to raising $2 million to create the feature-length film on @dukembb first Black athlete, Claudius “C.B.” Claiborne. We will get there!

Still, it’s amazing to see the reach that his story has gotten today. Before we started telling this story, very few people knew about CB’s contributions! It’s beautiful that this story is being elevated getting so much attention!

Athletes have influence far beyond the scoreboard.

Dr. C.B. Claiborne joins Way Up With Yee to discuss why athletes should use their platforms for change and shares a powerful activism story of his own.

Are we asking the right question in the NIL debate?

Much of the conversation focuses on what college athletes are earning.

But are we talking enough about what families have already invested?

Consider this:

• 75% of American children play youth sports. (Aspen Institute)

• American families spend up to $40 billion every year on youth sports. (Aspen Institute)

• 60% of families say youth sports create financial strain. (LendingTree)

• Nearly 1 in 5 families have taken a second job or worked overtime to support their child’s athletic journey. (Harris Poll)

• The average family spends 12 hours every week on their children’s sports activities. (Harris Poll) (Project Play)

As college sports continue to evolve, are we giving enough thought to the sacrifices families make long before a student-athlete ever steps onto a college campus?

In this conversation, filmmaker and Duke educator Javier Wallace, whose documentary tells the story of C.B. Claiborne, Duke’s first Black basketball player, shares his perspective on one of the biggest issues shaping college athletics today.

What’s missing from the NIL debate?

We’d especially love to hear from parents, student-athletes, coaches and fans.

The road to @cbthemovie started in the first class I taught at @dukeuniversity and five @dukembb players walked through the door. They didn’t know who CB Claiborne was at all!
