One final look back at the 2026 PNCA Symposium: Art, Aura & the Algorithm.
We wrapped up three days of conversation, experimentation, and creative exploration with the Dorothy Lemelson Keynote Lecture featuring Sasha Stiles.

A first-generation Kalmyk-American poet and language artist, Stiles explores what it means to be human in a more-than-human world. Her interdisciplinary practice brings together poetry, technology, language, and artificial intelligence, examining what she calls “poetic intelligence” - the synthesis of emotion and algorithm.

Her keynote offered a fitting conclusion to a symposium centered on the evolving relationships between art, authorship, technology, and human creativity.

Thank you to Sasha Stiles and to everyone who joined us throughout this year’s symposium. And a special thank you to all of the artists, speakers, faculty, students, and organizers who made Art, Aura & the Algorithm possible! by @ccac_pnca

Another highlight from the 2026 PNCA Symposium: Art, Aura & the Algorithm

The Academic Faculty Panel: AI, Agency, and the Politics of Futurity brought together Robert Clarke and Christopher Michlig, moderated by Sloane McNulty, for an interdisciplinary conversation about the evolving relationship between humans, technology, and creative agency.

The panel explored questions surrounding authorship, autonomy, cultural power, and artificial subjecthood, while considering how AI is challenging our ideas about who creates, whose knowledge is represented, and how we imagine the future.

Thank you to our panelists, moderator, and everyone who joined us for this thought-provoking conversation! by @ccac_pnca

What a great 2026 PNCA Symposium!

Last week, the PNCA community came together for three days of conversation, experimentation, and creative exploration during Art, Aura & the Algorithm, this year’s annual PNCA Symposium.

Throughout the symposium, artists, thinkers, students, and community members explored questions of artistic presence, authenticity, authorship, and meaning in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and algorithmic systems.

One of the week’s memorable experiences was artist Avital Meshi’s AI Séance Performance. 🕯️

Participants were invited to write the names of people who had passed away on white cards before handing them to Meshi, who sat as a medium at a candlelit table. Wearing a DIY AI device, she called each name and spoke aloud a response generated through AI.

Rather than claiming to contact the dead, the performance invited the audience to consider questions of memory, presence, identity, and authorship. What happens when AI constructs a voice from the traces someone has left behind? Who, or what, is speaking when that presence emerges through an archive, an algorithm, a performer, and an audience?

It was a thought-provoking start to a symposium full of opportunities to consider what new technologies make possible for artists, and what we might gain, change, or lose when machines mediate creative connection.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Art, Aura & the Algorithm! Stay tuned as we share more moments from this year’s PNCA Symposium. by @ccac_pnca

Thanks to everyone who joined us for the kickoff of our Fall 2026 PNCA Design Lecture Series with graphic designer and art director Marshall Wang! 🎤

Marshall Wang shared fascinating insights into her Brooklyn-based practice, which spans moving image, installation, publishing, interaction design, creative technology, and visual systems. Students, faculty, and guests gathered to explore how her work examines post-digital culture, technological infrastructure, and the politics of imagery, creating synthetic yet intimate experiences across aesthetics, simulacra, and networked media.

Thank you to Marshall Wang for sharing her incredible career journey, MFA and BFA experience, and co-founding story behind Sequence Giftshop with our PNCA community! by @ccac_pnca

ONE WEEK.

In one week, we’re bringing a question we’ve been sitting with for the past year into the room.

Did We Sell Out?

We’re filling PNCA with artists, organizers, small business owners, creatives, and community members for a day of baile, conversation, workshops, food, art, music, and connection.

No easy answers. No purity tests. Just a community willing to ask difficult questions about growth, opportunity, compromise, and what it means to build on our own terms.

October 11 | 12–5 PM | PNCA (@ccac_pnca)
Free + open to the community.

Get your tickets before we “sell out”. 😏

Thanks to everyone who joined us for an incredible First Thursday full of art, inspiration, and community at PNCA! 🎨

Visitors had the chance to explore an amazing, diverse lineup of exhibitions, installations, and hands-on gatherings across campus:

Aura Archive: Presented as part of the Art, Aura and the Algorithm programming, this experience brought the unseen to light by capturing unique energetic blueprints and visual imprints of personal traits, emotions, and experiences.

Seed to Quilt: Beloved Fragments: An intimate gathering with cultural workers, artists, and land stewards that drew on sacred community traditions to explore traditional and alternative modes of exchanging memory, relating to time, and developing language.

Schrӧdinger’s Rat: Art, Existence, and Resistance over Algorithmic Superposition: Curated by Fall 2026 Graduate Curatorial Fellow Tori Nickles, this group exhibition examined Schrödinger’s thought experiment alongside resistance in today’s AI-reliant society.

Death & Daylight: A multidimensional installation bringing together a seven-song film series, instrumental recordings, and collaborative album artwork created with Hannah Ram and David Serna.

Self in Setting: A captivating series of sculptures exploring the connection between place, perception, behavior, and identity through a sociological lens.

Artist-Led Sewing Circle: Presented as part of Portland Textile Month and PNCA’s Art, Aura & the Algorithm symposium, artist Isabella Saavedra and Art Gang led an in-person sewing circle focused on creativity, community connection, and the value of making together.

TODAY’S THE BIG DAY! Portland TextileX Month: Layers of Resilience is officially underway! With many openings tied to First Thursday happening this evening, we want to give a special sneak peek glimpse at what’s in store at PNCA, since two different events are happening there today, from 5-8 PM! @ccac_pnca

Opening in PNCA’s atrium is “Seed to Quilt: Beloved Fragments,” an exhibition-as-intimate gathering with cultural workers, artists, and land stewards that explores traditional and new alternative modes, techniques, and tools to exchange memory, relate to time, and develop language. Inspired by the sacred methodology of “using what you have on you” that many of our Black and Indigenous communities, aunties, mothers, and grandmothers have carried, the artists grew dye gardens, organized collective community harvests, deepened and developed relationships with Poke Berry, Marigold, Hibiscus, and Indigo, dyeing and quilting a piece that documents and holds the work and medicine of our time and carries on as a living archive.

At the same time, Isabella Saavedra @indigorituals will be leading a sewing circle exploring creativity, connection, and the value of making together. This year, PNCA’s annual symposium, Art, Aura & the Algorithm, looks at “aura”, or artistic presence, in a world shaped by AI, digital reproduction, and algorithm-systems that increasingly influence what we see, choose, and create. In contrast, the sewing circle offers a space for a more immediate kind of creative experience: gathering around a table, sharing materials, learning from one another, and letting the process unfold. The sewing circle invites us to consider what happens when creativity is rooted in physical presence and shared experience. No sewing experience is necessary. Come as you are, bring your curiosity, and join us for an evening of making together.

We hope you can join PNCA and PTXM for these events tonight, as well as all of the other openings and our own Community Gathering down the street at @skylabarchitecture 🤲

The 2026 PNCA Symposium: Art, Aura, and the Algorithm begins on Thursday, October 1st!

This year's symposium invites the community to explore "aura," artistic presence, authenticity, and meaning, in an era shaped by artificial intelligence and algorithmic systems. Over three days, the program moves between panel discussions, a séance inspired performance, an artist led sewing circle, an interactive workshop, and keynote lecture by poet and AI researcher Sasha Stiles.Together, these events examine what algorithmic tools make possible for artists today, new forms of collaboration, generation, and expression, alongside what they may constrain or displace, from embodied presence to the unpredictability of the human hand. What happens to creative connection when making is mediated by machines, and what is gained or lost in the process?

86/26 reflects on the demands and rewards of a long studio practice through the works of five artists who live in Portland. Phil Harris, Connie Kiener, Georgiana Nehl, Lucinda Parker and Arvie Smith all studied or taught at PNCA (or its antecedent, the Museum Art School) at some point during the last forty years. 86/26 pairs work from the mid-1980s with recent work to show how artists’ progress can be recursive and discursive over time, not a simple trajectory of technical improvement or repetition.

Did We Sell Out?

October 11 • PNCA • 12–5 PM

A day of honest conversation about community, money, access, visibility, growth, compromise, and what happens when the work we build starts getting recognized by the institutions, brands, and systems around us.

We’ll have a community panel, workshops, Community Tables, baile with Bailando Afuera, food, and plenty of time to actually talk to each other.

This isn’t a conversation we expect everyone to agree on.

That’s kind of the point.

Come ready to listen, question, disagree, reflect, and be part of the conversation.

Free and open to the public.

RSVP through the link in our bio.
