Free and open to all!

Karen Hsu holds a B.F.A. in graphic design from Oregon State University and an M.F.A. in graphic design from Yale University School of Art. She is on the board of the Portland Art Museum Contemporary Art Council.

She is a founding partner at Omnivore, a Brooklyn-, Portland- and Los Angeles-based design studio comprised of Karen Hsu, Alice Chung and Julie Cho. Their work focuses on art, architecture, and culture-related design work balanced by a strong commitment to cause-related projects through a unique and collaborative approach.

The Omnivore studio is a hidden gem in the design scene. This Asian-women-led and owned studio is responsible for some excellent design work that flies under the radar in the NYC, LA, and PDX scenes across branding, environmental, books, illustration, and web. Some prime examples of their projects in our communities include the Art Map for the Cultural Corridor of Portland, Converge 45, Don’t Shoot and the Black Gallery, and The Moth.
Karen’s talk is the grand finale for the Fall edition of our series, so make sure you sign up to save a spot! Link is in our bio!

Stopped by my favorite bookstore @wordvirusbooks 📚 , discovered a decadent chocolate shop @azarindulgences 🍫, listened to a poetry reading @motherfoucaultsbooks 📖, attended an art presentation on communal quilting @ccac_pnca 🧵, and wandered along the riverfront with the local wildlife🦆 Can’t wait for my next visit to Portland!📍

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our latest PNCA Design Lecture Series with designer and art director Molly Dyson! 🎤

Molly walked us through her inspiring journey, from studying Fine Arts at Melbourne University to earning her degree in Visual Communication at Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin. Students, faculty, and guests got an insider look at her vibrant career across Berlin and Portland.

Now bringing her talents as a Senior Designer at Wieden + Kennedy on the Nike team, Molly shared fascinating insights into her creative process, what moves her work, and what it takes to break expectations in the global design world!

A massive thank you to Molly Dyson for sharing her time, global perspective, and expertise with our PNCA community!

Your sneak peek behind the studio door 👀🍂

Before the work makes it to the gallery wall, it lives here: in the mess, the experiments, and the half-finished pieces. This Saturday, PNCA’s MFA Visual Studies candidates are letting us all in to see it.

The annual Open Studios at the Glass Building is your chance to walk through real working studios, check out finished and in-progress work, and chat with the artists about their process. Think of it as meeting Portland’s next wave of gallery names before everyone else does.

One important note: skip the main campus on Broadway! This event is at PNCA’s MFA studios in the Glass Building in North Portland, an old glass factory that’s now full of artists.

📍 The Glass Building, 2139 N Kerby Ave, Portland
🗓 This Saturday, October 24
🕔 5–8 PM
🎟 Free and open to all (RSVP on Eventbrite)

Grab a friend, bring your curiosity, and go see the work where it’s made. 🖤

This Wednesday evening 6-7:30pm at PNCA I will be giving an artist talk for our closing of Seed to Quilt's exhibition (it is the last day of our exhibition!)

I learned a great deal with this first run of Seed to Quilt, holding a container of collaboration for a year, honoring crip time, exhibition design, teaching my process, theories, and a lot more! Thank you so much to all of the participating artists Dey Rivers @artbydey Ella Ray @earth2earth2earth Mia Raiah @primaryrituals and our master quilter Adriene Cruz @thedreamerswindow I do have Seed to Quilt 2 planned out, it will be a completely different format, timeline, plant, and process <3 I am currently working on fundraising for that. Please stay tuned and share this project with people who are interested!

More soon 🤍

Studio snooping season is here 🍂🎨

Ever wonder what happens before the work hits the gallery wall? Here’s your chance to find out.

PNCA’s MFA Visual Studies candidates are opening their doors for the annual Open Studios at the Glass Building. Wander through working studios, see pieces in progress (and finished ones too), and actually talk to the artists about what they’re making and why. This is where you meet the names you’ll be seeing in Portland galleries in a few years.

Heads up: this one is NOT at PNCA’s main campus on Broadway. It’s up at the MFA studios at the Glass Building in North Portland, a former glass factory turned studio space.

📍 The Glass Building, 2139 N Kerby Ave, Portland
🗓 Saturday, October 24
🕔 5–8 PM
🎟 Free + open to everyone (RSVP on Eventbrite)

Bring a friend, bring your questions, and go see some art up close. 🖤
