We’re getting ready for Experience UGA @ CED! Check out what you missed at our Interest Meeting!

CED students linked up around their favorite field trip module: Studio Life, Hand Graphics, or North Campus Tour. We then asked them, “What do you like most about this module?” “What questions do you have about this module?” “What new ideas do you have for this module?”. This generated great discussion, spurred new ideas for the trips, and set the stage for our next planning meeting.

Interested in volunteering? There’s still time to join! Come to our first Planning Meeting on Wednesday 10/7 from 5 PM – 6:30 PM @ JSB Crit Space. During the meeting we will finalize our module programs by compiling a supplies list and outlining the different roles and responsibilities within each group. by @ccdp_uga

CED had a blast at #ASLA2026!

Last week, CED students and faculty traveled to Los Angeles for the 2026 American Society of Landscape Architects Conference. Over three days of learning, exploration, and connection, our group toured the city’s distinctive landscapes, participated in sketch crawls and conference events, and connected with landscape architecture students, educators, and professionals from across the country.

CED is especially proud to share that our students received the 2026 ASLA National Student Honor Awards in the Communications category for the project “Root and Relationship: Sharing the Complexities of Planting Design.” Learn more about this award-winning project in our newsfeed! What better way to end a summer internship than by learning from professionals in the field? From July 27 to 29, our Findit surveyors had the opportunity to shadow the cultural resource management firm, New South Associates, during their survey of historic architecture in Westminster, South Carolina. Hosted by Findit alum, Laura Leigh Haga and her colleague, Cory France, the Findit Crew observed and absorbed the pro’s techniques for efficiently photographing and documenting over 500 historic buildings. Plus, it made for a fun road trip and good eating! Thank you, New South Associates! by @ccdp_uga

At the end of Findit’s first survey day in Winder, the team took the opportunity to visit the historic Winder train depot. Today it serves as the home of @barrowcountychamber, and their staff gave us a behind the scenes tour of the depot’s preserved waiting rooms and ticket office, and we got to climb aboard an original Gainesville-Midland Railroad locomotive! taken in Winder Depot by @ccdp_uga

Starting July 7th, our Findit crew began the field portion of their summer project: a survey of the City of Winder’s historic districts. In the weeks leading up to the in-field survey, we took a deep dive into the architectural history of Winder by using resources such as historic photographs, Sanborn Maps, National Register of Historic Places nomination forms, and historic aerials. In Winder, our FindIt surveyors took detailed notes about house types, styles, alterations, materials, landscaping and streetscaping, and all sorts of architectural features. The information collected will be entered into GNAHRGIS (the Georgia Natural, Archaeological, and Historic Resource Geographic Information System) and utilized by the City of Winder to help maintain their Certified Local Government status. Take a look at our surveyors in action and some of our favorite buildings! Thank you to @negrc_pgs and @cityofwinder for collaborating with us on this project! by @ccdp_uga

Meet our 2026-2027 Historic Preservation Graduate Assistants! The FindIt Historic Resource Survey Partnership is a state-wide cultural resource survey program created to help document historic resources throughout Georgia and facilitate their preservation. Housed within the Center for Community Design and Preservation (CCDP), the FindIt program is a unique learning experience whereby students are trained to identify and document a breadth of cultural resources, such as historic buildings, landscapes, and other structures. The FindIt program is entirely student-focused, as student workers conduct all field work, data entry, and architectural analysis!

Hey, y’all! I’m Darby, and I am a second-year student in the MHP program. I grew up in Chapin, SC on Lake Murray, but lived in the lowcountry for 10 years and consider it to be my second home. It’s where I fell in love with architectural history, which led me to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Historic Preservation and Community Planning from the College of Charleston. Before attending UGA, I served as a Historical Interpreter at the Owens Thomas House & Slave Quarters in Savannah, GA. I love experimenting with recipes, weightlifting, live music, spending time with my friends and family, and exploring Georgia with my partner. A fun fact about me is that I am scared of birds!

Hi, I’m Maddy! I am a 5th year DoubleDawg from Atlanta, Georgia, and I just completed my B.A. in Classics (Archeology) this Spring! Before joining the FindIt team I worked for UGA’s Laboratory of Archaeology and as a legal intern for Newfields Companies. Some fun facts about me are that I am SCUBA certified, I have been to 20 countries, and I have had my pet turtle since 3rd grade!

Hi, I’m Bree! I am from Rutherfordton, North Carolina, and I have a B.A. in History from Mercer University. A fun fact about me is that I play the viola!

I’m David Phillips and I am a second-year student in the Master of Historic Preservation program. I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of North Georgia – Dahlonega. Fun fact: I previously drove tractor-trailers for touring musical acts before pursuing my graduate degree! I have a passion for l by @ccdp_uga

The College of Environment and Design is pleased to hear of Clarke County School District's renovation plans for the historic West Broad Street School!

Last winter, our Center for Community Design and Preservation had the opportunity to collaborate with a Clarke Central High School class working on site redesigns for the historic property. Led by teacher Enya Granados, students used elements of landscape architecture, urban planning and historic preservation to create a site design that would benefit the community around it. The CCDP provided sketching "cheat sheets" to the students, interacted with them during the annual Experience UGA field trip to the CED, and served as guest reviewers at the project's end of semester critique.

We look forward to continuing to strengthen relationships with CCSD schools. Read more about the renovation plans at the Red & Black's website, redandblack.com. by @ccdp_uga

This week is National Volunteer Week! At the CED, we are proud to offer numerous volunteer and service-learning opportunities to our students, faculty and community.

This week, we will be highlighting a few of the ways our students can contribute to the university's mission of public service and outreach– from serving at the CED, serving communities in Athens and serving across the state.

Today, we're highlighting the Center for Community Design and Preservation, the CED's in-house outreach office and hub for service opportunities! Swipe to read more about the opportunities available through the CCDP. by @ccdp_uga

On Feb. 7, the Stone Well Worship Center in Thomaston, Georgia opened its doors to something slightly unusual for a typical Saturday: 10 graduate students from the University of Georgia, laden with maps, highlighters and curiosity.

From Feb. 7 to 9, @mla_uga and @uga_mhp students at the College of Environment and Design teamed up to help the City of Thomaston redevelop, revitalize and reinvest in a historically underserved area through a multi-day design charrette led by @ccdp_uga.
