This Sunday, October 18th, seven of the historic neighborhoods in Athens will be transformed into a widespread music venue with over 200 performances! For the fourth year in a row, @dr._k.marages has facilitated a collaboration between the UGA MHP Program and Historic Athens. Creating a project for students in her Vernacular Architecture course, Dr. Marages taught the intricacies of house history research through deeds, aerial photos, Sanborn maps, and historic newspapers. Hoping to tell the story of some participating buildings, their residents, and their part in Athens's history, students created a short description to be printed onto yard signs and placed at the house of their choosing. A friendly sign design competition in our Basic Preservation Graphics course crowned Marissa Splendore, a first year MHP student, the winner! Keep an eye out for student-made posters while you enjoy Porchfest performances, and be sure to scan the QR codes to learn more about the history of other houses around Athens. MHP students will also be leading tours on the Historic Athens trolley throughout the day. Feel free to hop on and off at trolley stops along the route to learn more about Athens History!

CED had a blast at #ASLA2026! Last week, CED students and faculty traveled to Los Angeles for the 2026 American Society of Landscape Architects Conference. Over three days of learning, exploration, and connection, our group toured the city’s distinctive landscapes, participated in sketch crawls and conference events, and connected with landscape architecture students, educators, and professionals from across the country. CED is especially proud to share that our students received the 2026 ASLA National Student Honor Awards in the Communications category for the project “Root and Relationship: Sharing the Complexities of Planting Design.” Learn more about this award-winning project in our newsfeed! The College of Environment and Design is pleased to hear of Clarke County School District's renovation plans for the historic West Broad Street School! Last winter, our Center for Community Design and Preservation had the opportunity to collaborate with a Clarke Central High School class working on site redesigns for the historic property. Led by teacher Enya Granados, students used elements of landscape architecture, urban planning and historic preservation to create a site design that would benefit the community around it. The CCDP provided sketching "cheat sheets" to the students, interacted with them during the annual Experience UGA field trip to the CED, and served as guest reviewers at the project's end of semester critique. We look forward to continuing to strengthen relationships with CCSD schools. Read more about the renovation plans at the Red & Black's website, redandblack.com.

This week is National Volunteer Week! At the CED, we are proud to offer numerous volunteer and service-learning opportunities to our students, faculty and community. This week, we will be highlighting a few of the ways our students can contribute to the university's mission of public service and outreach– from serving at the CED, serving communities in Athens and serving across the state. Today, we're highlighting the Center for Community Design and Preservation, the CED's in-house outreach office and hub for service opportunities! Swipe to read more about the opportunities available through the CCDP.

On Feb. 7, the Stone Well Worship Center in Thomaston, Georgia opened its doors to something slightly unusual for a typical Saturday: 10 graduate students from the University of Georgia, laden with maps, highlighters and curiosity. From Feb. 7 to 9, @mla_uga and @uga_mhp students at the College of Environment and Design teamed up to help the City of Thomaston redevelop, revitalize and reinvest in a historically underserved area through a multi-day design charrette led by @ccdp_uga. Read more about the design charrette at our newsfeed link in bio.

What a sash weight! Four of our MHPs spent this past weekend in Thomaston, GA participating in a design charrette hosted by @ccdp_uga and were able to hold a 25 lb window sash weight from one of their site visits! Design charrettes are short and intensive workshops focused on solving big problems, and our students, along with our @ugaced peers in the MLA program, spent three days imagining the future of East Thomaston. Our MHPs drafted designs for future residential and commercial developments, advocated for new maker spaces and cultural centers, and provided contextualization to help maintain the historic character of Thomaston. We also toured several historic tax credit projects (where the sash weight was found) and the Upson County Archives, met with the public, and presented to several community groups for feedback to help better serve and understand the community. Keep a look out for the final report! @ccdp_uga will compile all of the designs for Thomaston to implement as they see fit. Want to go on the next one? Keep an eye on @ccdp_uga to stay up to date!

UGA’s FindIt program partnered with the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission to survey Monticello’s historic district, documenting 400 properties. The project gives graduate students hands-on training in architectural types, styles, GIS, and cultural resource management while providing essential data that supports local preservation efforts, state reviews, and community planning across Georgia. “Most folks have an interest in history in some capacity. It might be cars, family genealogy, or military history — but we all have an attachment to the past and an interest in what came before us and how it tells us about the lives we have today.” - Jennifer Lewis #UGAResearch #HistoricPreservation #GeorgiaHistory #CommunityPlanning #PreserveGeorgia #UGAResearch #MonticelloGA

The Master of Historic Preservation program has been gearing up for this weekend’s Porchfest hosted by @historicathens! Our Vernacular Architecture students, under the direction of Dr. Katie Marages @dr._k.marages, have been hard at work writing historic house histories with help from @ccdp_uga Findit program and from the residents themselves. Some of our students will serve as docents on @athenstrolleytours sharing their insights on the historic Athens house types and styles that are right in UGA’s backyard. Follow along Sunday as our students takeover and show Athens from a whole new lens!

This summer, UGA students in the FindIt Historic Resource Survey documented nearly 3,000 historic properties in Meriwether County! 🏡✨ From stone barns to Revolutionary War-era headstones, they recorded pieces of Georgia’s history while gaining hands-on experience in the field. Using a mix of paper surveys, digital mapping, and even a hand-crafted "junk journal," they captured pieces of Georgia’s history in creative and meaningful ways. Check out their work by clicking the newsfeed link in our bio!

Go @experienceuga !! I had such a fun time last week welcoming 10th grade students from @cedarshoalshighschool and @clarkecentralhighschool and showing them what the College of Environment and Design is all about! My lovely friends and I led one part of their action packed day where they got a tour of the studio and competed against each other in a balloon tower building competition! Thank you so much for all the laughs and a super entertaining two days!
