Meet Erik Smith!

Erik Smith, field crops specialist and team leader with CCE’s Central New York Dairy, Livestock, and Field Crops Program, didn’t grow up on a farm. But a family legacy in agriculture — and a summer job studying insects — set him on an unexpected path to Extension.

Today, he serves grain and forage producers across eight counties, combining education, on-farm consultation and applied research, including a statewide study examining neonicotinoid seed treatments.

How do you get a community to care about a bird they may know little about?

Angie Tang ’28, a communication and animal
science student in Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, spent her summer as a Cornell Cooperative Extension summer intern at the Cornell
Biological Field Station near Syracuse, helping more people discover the common terns of Oneida Lake.

Angie created educational resources, visited
schools and summer camps, connected with local businesses and helped launch “A Tern in Every Town” — a scavenger hunt featuring 3-D printed tern figurines
placed around the lake.

Through her outreach, Angie reached more than 15,000 people, building awareness of a species whose numbers have declined dramatically and whose nesting habitat continues to shrink. Along the way, she found inspiration in the terns themselves and their determination to keep trying, even after storms destroyed many of their nests.

Thank you to Angie for her work this summer and for her contributions to common tern conservation!

What makes an apple perfect for hard cider? It might not be what you think. 🍎

Mike Basedow, tree fruit specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Eastern New York Commercial Horticulture team, breaks down what separates the apples we snack on from those grown specifically for cider.

The biggest difference is on the inside. Cider apples pack more tannins and other compounds — the exact things that give hard cider its dryness, bitterness and complexity.

Some apples are made for eating. Others are made for fermenting. taken in Cornell University by @ccecornell

At The Great New York State Fair, Wyoming County 4-H’er Alaina and her pig, Iris, took on the Youth Swine Show.

In the ring, Alaina works to keep Iris in the judge’s view while showing how well they can move and respond as a team. But showing swine has helped Alaina grow beyond the show ring, too.

Watch as Alaina shares how she overcame her fear of competing in front of a crowd. taken in New York State Fairgrounds by @ccecornell

At The Great New York State Fair, 12-year-old Raelyn from Steuben County 4-H showed her Boer meat goat, Jenny, in the Youth Meat Goat Show.

Raelyn’s approach is simple: walk into the ring like you own it, and believe you’re going to win. That mindset helped her take Grand Champion in Master Showmanship, where exhibitors are judged on how well they handle their animal.

4-H members from across New York are showcasing their culinary skills at the New York State Fair.

Ann Supa, 4-H UNITY and nutrition educator from CCE Broome County, gives the inside scoop on how these culinary creations get judged.

It’s not just about taste and presentation. Judges provide valuable feedback that actually helps participants grow. Because at the end of the day, the ribbon color matters way less than what these young chefs walk away having learned. taken in New York State Fairgrounds by @ccecornell

Kate, Eve and Amelia of CCE Suffolk County’s 4-H program put their goat-grooming skills to the test at the Great New York State Fair.

Like a competitive baking show — but with goats — the fitting competition gave them a limited amount of time to wash, clip, groom and style a dairy goat for the show ring. Together, they combined experience with curiosity and worked as a team to meet the challenge. taken in New York State Fairgrounds by @ccecornell
