We had a blast! Last weekend we had the opportunity to help Community Composter, Nadege bring community composting to William B. Washington Memorial Garden. Celebrating our 2nd annual Compost Art Social, visitors in the community had the opportunity to be part of art making and learn from experts about different forms of composting.

Joined by different organizations centered in sustainability, this was a chance for Master Composters-in-Training to gain one more step closer to completing their certification.

From the outside looking in-

There are currently 2 community gardens in Middletown. Yesterday, I went over to check out the one Im not renting a bed from. There were many things I saw that gave me inspiration and motivation to bring back. Some of those things include: a large sign, numbered garden beds, communal composting, evidence they dont have a critter problem, bamboo growing in the lot.

If you're interested in joining me at the garden, you can check out the facebook page: Marion & Lou Berkman Memorial Community Garden

October on a farm is busy. 🌱

Schools are in full swing, harvests are happening, and somehow we're planting for next year while still harvesting this one.

Since RCFN began, restoring our soil has been one of our biggest priorities. Areas once overtaken by mugwort and weeds are now thriving—and we didn't do it alone.

We talked to farmers, landscapers and community partners. We researched, experimented and kept learning.

🌱 Rockland County and the Town helped bring leaves to rebuild our soil.
🌱 Rockland Green provides compost that meets our organic-practice standards.
🌱 On Point Tree Company provides wood chips for our fields and blueberries.
🌱 Cornell Cooperative Extension helps us test our soil and measure our progress.

But while we've been rebuilding our soil, we've also been building community.

Through AmeriCorps, Clarkstown High School, ARC, BRIDGES, Jawonio, local schools, businesses and incredible volunteers, we're creating a farm where people of different ages, interests and abilities can learn, work and grow together.

Today we're planting strawberries for next season. 🍓 Next week, we'll plant blueberries with a volunteer group from Regeneron. 🫐

This is community farming. Sharing knowledge. Sharing resources. Learning together. And planting something today because you believe in what it can become tomorrow.

When there's a will—and a community—there's a way. 💚🌱

I had the opportunity to lead a live cooking demonstration at @ccecornell Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County’s Family Fun Day at East Meadow Farm! 🌱👨🏾‍🍳

Farm-to-table cooking is a passion of mine—celebrating fresh, seasonal ingredients and connecting people to where their food comes from. Sharing that passion with families in our community made the day even more special.

Thank you to the CCE Nassau team for inviting me and to everyone who stopped by to taste, learn, and connect!

Some people have been saying “It’s not all men”, and to them, I’d say, “but it is in all of the systems!”

Cornell University can do better! 57 men can do something! 7 men can be held accountable! Students deserve a safe space to learn.

Apple trees update! 🍎 Recently, we checked up on our new apple trees growing at the Fair's Voice of the Farmer Garden. Some of you may remember when @ccecornell graciously planted the trees in May. Although these guys won’t produce apples for a while, they’re already starting to get height!

Thank you again to Cornell Cooperative Extension for these exciting new additions to the garden! We can’t wait for the first bounty... 🎊✨ (only 3 more years!)

What can a cardboard scrap become? 📦

At the Trash Lab, the answer was entirely up to our young visitors. Visitors to our August Pop-Up Museum could follow prompts to make fish for our immersive forest, turn pre-cut cardboard into unexpected creatures… or simply create whatever they imagined! 💭 🐟

Volunteers Christopher Daly constructed the exhibit table from thrifted materials and old milk crates, with help from Jared Alon. We filled it with cardboard scraps, beads, yarn, googly eyes, crayons, glue, and other creative supplies.

During a special field trip from the Center for Creative Education, Zebi led cardboard crafts for children looking for a quieter, hands-on experience. One young visitor walked through the door and exclaimed, “I’VE ALWAYS DREAMED OF COMING HERE!”

That’s exactly the kind of wonder we hope to make possible: playful, open-ended learning that helps children see new value in the materials around them.
What would you create in the Trash Lab? 🗑️

Special thanks to Ulster County ReStore, Frugal Fabrics, Free to Thrift and our wonderful volunteers for helping to supply props and materials to the MGM Pop-Up Museum!

Join Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster and Columbia-Greene Counties and Scenic Hudson for a Farm Crawl to three different farms practicing Agroforestry with a focus on Silvopasture and Nursery Production on October 6th from 2PM to 6:30PM.

Come learn about the planning and implementation of additive silvopasture for cattle with Sky High Farm, then visit two sites that have been planted with a variety of species into hay fields and chestnuts into a pasture at Chaseholm Farm. Lastly, we will visit an agroforestry and fruit tree nursery and black locust stand being managed by Full Circus Farm and their draft horses. There will be a discussion of propagation of different species and bud grafting.

At the end of the farm crawl we will travel just down the road to Sky High Farm to enjoy a meal, network, and continue the conversation. We ask participants to please carpool – no transportation is provided for this tour.

The cost for this event is $10. Visit the link in our bio to sign up today.
