Happy Spooktober!! 🎃👻🍂

Although I’m a mood reader and mostly grab what I crave at that moment, I thought I should try and make a tbr again for the coming two months. It’s a mix of horror, thriller, fantasy and romantasy and mostly from my own bookshelves. Some of them waited way too long to be picked up so I hope to really make a difference here. 💪🏼🤩

Do you have a fall tbr? by @cchasingtales

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒛𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒉𝒖𝒏𝒈𝒓𝒚.
𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒛𝒆 𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒊𝒕𝒔.

Nine Lives starts calm and peaceful with a lovely scene of this kind guy Noah. He’s a grieving widower since 5 years now and carefully starts to date again. He meets up in a bar with this nice and pretty-looking lady Tabbytha Grace. But the next thing he knows is waking up on a bed in a fluorescent white room with 72 other bunk beds in it, wearing a cat mask which he can’t remove. He feels like shit and has no memories of the day before. The room’s loaded with CCTV cameras and drone surveillance with pointed gun barrels on it. Suddenly a door opens and a maneki neko cat on wheels rolls in..

Do you know the golden cat statues displayed in Asian restaurants? The ones with the the red collar and the waving hand? It’s called a maneki neko and in Nine Lives this same cat is a huge part of these poor characters’ worst nightmare! 😼 Nine Lives reminds me of movies like Saw and Squid Game, but also Cube. Not only survival of the fittest, but also survival of the luckiest with their actual lives at stake. 🙀

This was such a wild ride and I devoured all of this madness!! 💪🏼🖤 I couldn’t get enough of Tabbytha, this batshit crazy cat lady, as well as the other characters. Some were kind and empathetic, others a real pain in the *ss. @c.w_evans did an amazing job portraying all these layered characters in such an excellent way. My emotions kept flying from feeling emotionally devastated to internally screaming ‘Woohoo, karma’s on the way’! 🔥😹

Reading from several POV’s was a blessing. It made the whole disaster unfold perfectly in front of my eyes and I’m sure it would look great on screen as well! I was so fascinated by how brilliant this maze is put together and the way Tabby brought her clan of cats in the Dorm. The concept with the cats is exceptionally well found and makes it really stand out to other horror survival books.😻

This book will stay with me for a long time and actually ignited a newfound love for similar books in this genre. Thank you so much for the given chance to read this banger in advance. It became an instant new favorite and I can’t wait to see what the future brings. 😸 by @cchasingtales

Some gods demand faith.
The God of Pain demands sacrifice.

The Children of Skoll is another fast paced psychological thriller by T. D. Lawler soaked in blood and gore.

It sure looks like this one will be the last installment in the Skoll series, but I’m not ready yet to say farewell. 😭 Skoll really became a part of my life this year and I had so much fun reading these books. He is such a unique character, or should I say psychopath 😈, and I loved every minute of him. It’s fair to say he is a love him or hate him kind of guy, but he was definitely an instant love for me. 🖤🔥

I liked the way the author brought this vile cult into the story. It added so much depth to the whole concept and a huge twist I didn’t see coming. I was so surprised! 🤯

Also, it was great to learn more about Sandra and her personal life including Emily. Extra special was the fact there’s a character named after me in it, pretty cool right?! 😎 I really enjoyed the part where they went after the cult members. I almost cheered out loud during that scene. 🤭

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sending me a copy Travis. I’ll never forget Skoll!! 🖤🥹

Blurb: Beneath an abandoned barn, boys are remade through pain, women vanish into darkness, and a prophet named Hati prepares his followers for something worse than death. Skoll’s shadow looms over it all, while Sandra searches for the woman she loves before she is lost to the same darkness. As the line between monster and savior begins to blur they are forced to decide how far they will go to stop what is growing beneath the surface. by @cchasingtales

It felt so incredibly good being back in Øyerstad for the third time. While reading I could only think of how much I missed this eerie Norwegian village and its residents and I’m so happy and thankful for being a part of it again. 🥹

In The Bully we follow this boy Oliver, who’s living a nice and peaceful life in Øyerstad with his mother Emma, his grandparents and his friends from school. One day, when he’s playing outside, a motorcycle drives towards him and the driver asks if he wants a hotdog. From that day on Oliver’s life will change forever..

Yet again I was fully immersed in a story by Kjell-Vidar Åhman Teig. He has the talent to make the characters, as well as the setting, come alive in the most excellent way. He created another atmospheric, nostalgic and dark masterpiece and all I can say is that I’m a big fan of this author’s work since his debut A battle against demons. There’s a gradual build-up of underlying tension in The Bully which had me in a chokehold the whole time. I loved that feeling of unavoidable impending doom in between the lines and it kept me turning the pages.

All of the characters feel authentic, layered and relatable, like friends or even family, what makes the things they have to endure feel like a giant scary emotional rollercoaster you can’t escape from. 💔 All I wanted to do is give them the biggest hug ever and tell them it’s going to be okay, but will it actually be? Also, it was just phenomenal meeting a few characters from the previous books again. They and all the others have my whole heart and I just can’t stop thinking about them.

I can see why it would be very ungrateful of me to say I already miss these people and I want another book in the universe of Øyerstad, but actually it perfectly shows how The Bully left a lasting imprint on my soul and how fond I grew of all three books. They’ll live forever in my heart.. 🖤

Thank you so, so much for the ARC of this incredible story Kjell. It filled my heart with joy to dive into this universe once again. 🥹🖤 Øyerstad fangirl for ever here!! 🙋🏻‍♀️🇳🇴🔥🙏🏼

“𝘏𝘶𝘳𝘵 𝘮𝘦! 𝘒𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘦!” 𝘚𝘬𝘰𝘭𝘭 𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥.

After the tragic death of Erik in A symphony of violence Skoll is hurt and all he wants is to find the stiletto that belonged to Erik, his only friend who feels like a brother to him. Therefor he goes on a quest through town, but not without leaving a rapidly increasing body count.

It’s been over a year ago since I’ve read about Skoll, but from the very first page I was yet again totally invested in his story. Actually, it felt like meeting an old friend again after a long time. This villain owns a weak spot in my heart and I could never get tired of him. 🖤

“𝘔𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘴,” 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥. “𝘐 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮.”

Hurt is a fast paced read and impossible to put down. I started at 6 am and managed to finish it in between my chores of the morning, I just couldn’t stop reading! I absolutely love how well the killing scenes are put together, with all the gory details that make it even more intriguing. You almost feel the wind moving around you with every blow on the head and your heart shrinking with every stab in the eye socket, not to mention limbs being ripped off and used as weapons. 🔥😈 The brutal violence is etched on my retinas, where it’ll stick for a long time. But all I can say is “WOW!!!” Read this or forever FOMO!

I can’t wait to pick up The children of Skoll. 🖤 by @cchasingtales

In the dark it devours by Shawn Brooks @shawnbroookswrites

An intense and nightmarish horror collection by one of my favorite horror authors. Shawn knows exactly how to deliver with these mind bending and hauntingly dark treats. The tension starts right from the very first page and never let’s off. Perfect for reading a story now and then, but for binge reading as well, because every story sucks you in from the get go. 🔥

In other collections I find most of the time several or at least a few stories that don’t grab me that much, but I truly loved each and every single one in this novel. Whatever subgenre you’re into, there’s something for you. Halloween horror, Japanese folklore, cosmic horror, haunted houses, paranormal and isolation horror, etcetera.

Some of my favorites if I have to choose are:
Hot and cold, I loved the elderly MMC and the way he he embraced his fate with quiet acceptance and courage.

Potato head, atmospheric and creepy.

Crawl space, my fave trope isolated cabin and oh my, was I rooting for the dog!

The dead are a river, Clifford’s British accent was the best. I could hear his voice in my mind when he spoke. 😁 Also, I loved the sheer horror of the afterlife concept and what happened when he closed his eyes. Truly terrifying! 👌🏼🔥

Where we lay our heads, I inhaled this one! I think the author got a lot of inspiration out of his daily life and it was so good.

Scary little man, heart wrenching and tragic and I’m a sucker for that. 🥹

Behind a twisted face, I devour stories about camping in the wild and even more when there’s a dark twist to it.

Oh and an honorable mention goes to The ninth. I read this story before in an other collection of Shawn. It went by the name The white feather club back then. He rewrote it and I really appreciate it because the eye concept was freaking me out before and The ninth brought a whole new dimension to it. 👌🏼

It’s hard to choose when they’re all killers as you can see. 🤭

Thanks again Shawn for the scares and as always I’m looking forward to see what you come up with next. 🤩🖤🔥

❔What book still haunts your thoughts now and then?

Here are 4 books I’ve recently read which still linger in my mind. 🖤 They’re all 4 and 5 star reads and I would highly recommend them. 🤩

✨Ghost Eaters by @claymcleod This book contains some of the most terrifying scenes I’ve ever read in my life. 😱 Def will reread this some time!

✨Leutogi by @harveythomasboyd is a psychological horror novel with a twisted and grotesque storyline about a woman’s obsession with a tapeworm and it kept me reading until the early hours. 🔥

✨The Fold by @c.w_evans takes place in a mysterious, gloomy and isolated setting with the most heinous creature ever. Every time he went on a rampage I found myself holding my breath, awaiting who or what he was going to destroy this time. 🤯

✨All Expenses Paid by @zoerosiauthor is a gripping and thought provoking thriller which hurled me in the biggest emotional rollercoaster ever and it feels terrifyingly real in today’s world. 😳

Authors, thank you so much for these masterpieces! They all nurtured my dark heart. 🙏🏼🖤 by @cchasingtales

Piggy by Holly Knightley @hollyknightley

On their daily walk Alley and her fiancé Blake find a $5 bill with the dubious text “Here Piggy, Piggy, Piggy. Greed is a sin and you just let me in” written on it with a marker. It just doesn’t feel right so they leave it be. When they notice their neighbor Mr. Wallace picking it up and Alley’s mother calls her later to let them know he passed away from a heart attack, Alley starts her own investigation..

This is the third story I’ve read from Holly Knightley and I can wholeheartedly say her work truly never disappoints! Piggy is a short story of 50 pages in the Knighttime Hour series and perfect to read in one sitting.

It blends fairytale horror with psychological thriller elements and delivers unsettling and impactful twists. The tension never lets down and that ending.. omg I didn’t see it coming!! If you’re up to psychological short stories this is definitely one worth picking up! 🤩🔥

Thank you so much Holly and @booksirens for this copy. 🖤 by @cchasingtales

T. D Lawler @t.d.lawler truly knows how to pack a punch with this short story Don’t whistle back. A young couple of newly weds is celebrating their love at a cabin in the Appalachian woods and despite multiple warnings they decide to wander into the woods where they encounter a Wendigo..

Awesome 70’s vibes, check! ☑️ Atmospheric setting, check! ☑️ Creepy ass Wendigo, check! ☑️ Shivers running up and down my spine, double check!! ☑️☑️

I’m a sucker for short stories, especially when they’re as brilliant as this one. Hauntingly good, very enjoyable and I really hope we get to see more of this vicious creature. Fans of Lawler’s work will be more than satisfied with yet another banger. 🤩🖤🔥 by @cchasingtales

Pretty Evil by Zoe Rosi @zoerosiauthor

If you wonder why there’s a crossbow in the shot, you have to read this book! 🔥😁

Camilla Black is a gorgeous and successful editor at Couture during the daytime, but when darkness falls she turns into a ruthless vigilante on the hunt for rapists and abusers.

Zoe Rosi knows to deliver with this dark, morally complex cat-and-mouse thriller. From the get go it pulls you into a tense and gripping atmosphere and you never know where it will lead to. I truly enjoyed it being so unpredictable. The pacing is tight which keeps you hooked throughout the book. Camilla is a complex, yet utterly fascinating character and I couldn’t stop rooting for her, because who doesn’t want payback time when it comes to sex predators?! 💪🏼

Detective Wheelan, who’s looking into the murders, gives the story an extra layer of tension and it’s up to Camilla to smart him out with inventive moves. I especially loved how the story kept blurring the line between justice and revenge, making it a twisted and thought-provoking read. I can’t stop thinking about it. All of the scenes are very graphic, the assaults and the spicy scenes in particular. Perfect for visual thinkers like me. 🔥🤭 Deeply unsettling and impactful, yet hard to put down. The audio narrator did an amazing job as well. If I had to think of a voice to go with the character of Camilla, it would be Frankie Porter.

Thank you so much for the audiobook Zoe. Pretty Evil will stick with me for a long time and it made me eager to dive into your other work. by @cchasingtales
