So excited to be launching Motion in Field, a new audio/editorial project I’m producing in collaboration with @marta.losangeles!

Motion in Field is a deep dive into the extracurricular output of contemporary artists and designers. Each installment features a single guest discussing their contribution to Marta’s Mezzanine series, which hosts small, focused, often supplementary work from artists within and outside of the gallery’s regular exhibition program. The ensuing conversations provide insight into the concepts and techniques that inspired each practitioner to step beyond their signature output and explore fascinating new terrains.

For the first installment of the series, I had the pleasure of speaking with @mnjaekim about “Fold Sconce” (2023), an experimental work whose minimal form and streamlined methods of production marked a new direction in his practice.

Huge thanks to @benjamincritton and @heidavong for being such generous and insightful collaborators - I’ve admired their programming for years, so it’s a pleasure to be working alongside them.

Thanks also to pals @jeremiahchiu and @mmartassofia for contributing the podcast’s theme music!

“Press Release Poems” chapbook now available via @bottlecappress ✨

“Press Release Poems is a collection of works composed of fragments culled from press releases for contemporary art exhibitions. The author scanned hundreds of texts, selecting words and short phrases that stood out for their conventionality (particularly in the context of ‘artspeak’ jargon or International Art English), informality, or rhetorical license. These remnants were then gathered and assembled into new compositions, interwoven with the author’s own lines and connective passages.

Formally, the work is experimental in both its strategy and its use of whitespace. Like a physical collage, each poem makes its process visible, with Schreck’s cut-and-paste methods articulated through line breaks and capitalizations preserved from the source material. But though born of a conceptual exercise, the results are linear and lyrical, unfolding as lucid, image-driven sequences that explore recurring motifs like convalescence, biological modification, digital entanglement, speculative materialism, and self-revision.”

The original works from this series actually date back to 2016, the result of experiments undertaken while stuck in bed recovering from a serious medical episode; this new book gathers a selection of those earlier pieces alongside more recent compositions.

Having done a lot of freelance work writing press materials for galleries, I think the conventions and codes around art press releases are interesting - not just the balancing act between description, promotion, and pure invention, but also the subtle slippages where institutional language can become oddly (if unintentionally) poignant. It’s been a lot of fun putting these pieces together. by @cdschreck

Very excited to present the self-titled debut by @a.single.ocean, a collaborative project with my brothers @a_clangor and @wwatermark! Head over to your preferred DSP to listen to the full album or grab a copy (vinyl and/or digital) via Bandcamp: https://asingleocean.bandcamp.com/album/a-single-ocean

Blending modular synthesis, analog hardware, live percussion, and studio manipulation, the twelve tracks on this album hover between spontaneity and design, with longform improvisations reshaped through overdubbing, cut-and-paste edits, and collage-minded layering. The results feel at once organic and methodical, with nods to influences ranging from Fourth World and classical minimalism to Japanese ambient and German kosmische musik.

We’re very proud of this record and happy to share it with all of you 🤍

Written, performed, and recorded by @a_clangor, @wwatermark, and @cdschreck
Guest players: @dylino_ryno and Keefe Jackson
Mastering: Dave Cooley at @elysianmasters
Cover artwork: @travess
Design and layout: @chriskaylis

“Freaky Gramlin” was born from a late-night improvisation, with Christopher layering parts on the @kurzweilmusic K2000 while Cameron used his modular setup to manipulate the sounds in real time. Over our next few sessions, we built and shaped the track, adding percussion (shakers and DrumKAT by Cameron), organ (Christopher), and a tasty solo on the @moogsynthesizers Grandmother by Scott.

Here are a few behind-the-scenes stills and clips documenting our process in the studio - click the link in bio to view/stream the final track 🤍

The latest episode of the @abundancezine pod is live, featuring a conversation with artist and designer @simonebodmerturner!

Landon and I spoke with Simone about how notions of “place” can shape the production and presentation of an artist’s work. Along the way, we explore a range of topics, including the challenges of moving a fridge-sized kiln, the fine art of tapping maple trees, ceramic facades by Fernand Leger, Simone’s prior exhibitions with @emma_scully_gallery and @matterstore, constructing one’s website as an intimate space, the importance of moving beyond audience expectations, and more.

The latest episode of Motion in Field is live, featuring an in-depth conversation with @wentrcek_zebulon!

I had the pleasure of speaking with Kristen and Andrew about the concepts and circumstances that led to “Quaternion” (2024), a site-responsive collection of modular furniture currently on view at @marcianoartfoundation. The project finds K&A branching out from their usual methods in several notable ways - among them, the incorporation of outside collaborators, the potential for editioned reproductions, and the active encouragement of audience participation. If you’re in the LA area, be sure to check out the show in person!

My sincere thanks to Kristen and Andrew for the wonderful discussion, to @benjamincritton and @heidavong of @marta.losangeles for being such generous collaborators, and to @jeremiahchiu and @mmartassofia for the beautiful theme music.

As the “Tape Transfers” series continues to evolve, I’ve enjoyed exploring strategies of seriality and repetition.

I’m finding that each can serve any number of functions: bringing visual coherence to fragmented compositions; reinforcing elements of rhythm and pacing; implying incremental movement, almost like cells in an analogue film reel; creating a larger sense of interconnection by repeating imagery across multiple pieces.

If you look closely, you’ll see that none of the repeated images are truly identical. This comes with the territory, given the work’s handmade nature, wherein nothing is exact and no two elements are ever the same - the length and edges of each strip of tape, the angle at which those strips are applied to newsprint, the coverage and consistency of the transfer pulls. In that sense, I like how the results speak to continuity as well as to finite circumstance, as each collage is effectively a document of moments unfolding, of decisions being made. But I also think it’s fun to consider how, even with more exacting serial artworks produced manually (e.g., Steve Reich, Agnes Martin, whomever), the close observation of repeated elements quickly becomes an exercise in perceiving nuance: when so much is the same, even minor discrepancies become pronounced, and apparently iterative works can become suddenly alive with subtle and shifting detail. by @cdschreck

For the latest episode of the @abundancezine pod, we sat down with @gq Senior Fashion Writer @samuelhine to explore what it means to be seen as an authority in one’s field. Along the way, we discussed the art history of runway show invites, the sage wisdom of Glenn O’Brien, Comme des Garçons printed ephemera, trying to explain Demna’s work to non-fashion folks, the rise of the “secular monk,” and criticism’s descent into clickbait.

This was truly a fun and illuminating conversation for me - I’m excited for people to hear it. 😊

Excited to be back with new episodes of the @abundancezine pod!

With these latest offerings come a few notable shifts in our approach - among them, a move away from seasonal programming in favor of more frequent releases; the introduction of subjects and themes to frame our discussions; and the presentation of one-on-one conversations between Landon and me to complement those we’ll continue to have with guests.

To kick things off, we begin with a hosts-only deep dive on the value and limitations of self-expression in artmaking, a topic which led us to meditations on a broad range of subjects, including reading “Moby Dick” to toddlers; the transcendent potential of bodega runs; the true meaning of the DIY ethos; the “lyrics or instrumental?” dilemma in songwriting; the role of self-reference in texts by Sontag, Hickey, and Schjeldahl; and formative lessons learned through teenage immersions in suburban punk scenes.
