Honestly, I’m completely blown away to have been named in the Leading 20 in Dentistry for the third year. 🥹💛

It’s such a privilege to be part of a community that continues to grow, support and lift each other up, especially in a field that doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. I’m so grateful to everyone who took the time to vote, and to @dentistry.co.uk for continuing to shine a light on dental technology and the people behind it.

This year feels especially meaningful because my wife has also been named in the Leading 20.... which means all of the Nightshift founders are included. To see something we’ve built together being recognised alongside so many inspiring people honestly means the world. 🐝

Thank you again to everyone who continues to believe in what we’re trying to do. Feeling very grateful and very proud of our community today. ❤️ taken in The Hive Dental Laboratory by @cdtemily

Complete upper and lower dentures with hand layered characterisation 🖌

These are my favourite cases to work on, sometimes I find using two colours of comp and one stain can go a long way - less is more.

I should probably introduce myself.

My name is Emily Pittard, I am a qualified dental nurse, dental technician and Clinical Dental Technician.

I co-own The Hive Dental Laboratory and The Hive Clinic with @dental.manager.
I am a co-founder of @nightshift.tech

I am an Education Associate for the GDC, on the Board for the College of General Dentistry (DT & CDT), and a Trustee for the incredible charity @dentech_charity

I have been lucky enough to be voted in the leading 'top 20' lab industry in the UK, win multiple awards, lecture internationally and become published online and offline.

To have opened my own fully private laboratory from scratch in my 20s, begin a squat denture clinic in my early 30's and see them both make it to the position they are in now makes me very proud as I was told multiple times that I would never be able to do this by my seniors... I think I have a problem with authority 😬.

For all the technicians out there who lack confidence or suffer from imposter syndrome - I can 100% relate, push yourself out of your comfort zone - great things start to happen.

We’ve been keeping a little secret… 🤍

And after what has already been quite a journey, it feels pretty special to finally share it on our 5th wedding anniversary.

Baby Pittard is due February 2027.

It’s been a long time in the making, and the last 21 weeks definitely haven’t been the easiest. We’ve been dealing with hyperemesis pretty much from the very beginning, which has meant a lot of sickness, hospital visits and some really difficult weeks for Ella.

So this pregnancy hasn’t quite looked how we imagined it would, but through all of it our little baby has been growing away, and somehow we’re already 21 weeks and over halfway there.

After everything it’s taken to get here, it feels slightly surreal to finally be able to say that we're making a little person together. 🤍

Five years married today… and next year there’ll be three of us.

Just some thoughts on special tray design 🦷

It’s so important to get the tray as close to perfect as possible from the lab, so that any final adjustments can be made easily in surgery.

In this case, the tray was slightly under-extended in a few areas.

The best way to assess this is simply to place the tray in the patient’s mouth and check where the borders sit in relation to the junction between the attached and unattached mucosa. This gives you a really useful guide as to where you may need to adjust or add material.

And don’t forget to check for pressure spots.

If the tray hurts when you seat it, there’s a good chance that pressure will be transferred to the final denture too.

A well-designed and well-adjusted special tray gives you the best foundation for a great master impression. 👌 taken in Manchester, United Kingdom by @cdtemily

World War II Noise Complaint

Imagine this: you’re working hard, and suddenly you get complaints about noise that’s described as equivalent to World War Two! 😱

That’s the reality for some dental lab owners. The vibrations and sounds can be intense, and it’s not just a minor inconvenience. It’s like torture!

Have you ever had a similar experience? Let’s share our stories!

Here is a straightforward explanation of the digital altered cast technique.

This is my favourite hybrid workflow when it comes to dentures — combining the predictability of conventional impression techniques with the efficiency and accuracy of digital dentistry. taken in Manchester, United Kingdom by @cdtemily

A chrome denture shouldn’t just replace what’s missing. It should protect what’s still there.

This case needed a little more thought: protecting areas of existing wear, incorporating backing where needed, and using a Scandinavian-style design to keep unnecessary coverage away from the gingival margins.

This is why I’m such a fan of designing before manufacturing.

Map it out, discuss it, amend it and agree it.

Good chrome design isn’t about how much metal you can add.

It’s knowing where you don’t need it. taken in The Hive Dental Laboratory by @cdtemily

Had such a fantastic day at the University of Greater Manchester!

We spent the day chatting about the future of Dental Technology, the next generation of techs coming through, and how Nightshift can work alongside the Dental Technology course to support them, create opportunities and hopefully make that jump from university into the real world a little less terrifying 😂

We also got to hear about the new facilities they’re building, including a brand new dental lab, and see the room where they actually test dental materials — which, for a bunch of dental techs geeks, is ridiculously cool

And apparently you can get a PhD in Dental Technology?!

How did I not know this?! 👀
Dr Nina,Dr Deepa,Dr Emily,Dr Eleanor,Dr Julia does have a certain ring to it… 😂

Lots of ideas, lots of exciting conversations and definitely the start of something really positive.

Because if we want the future of our profession to be better, we need to actually get involved in building it.

A massive thank you to Dr Karaganeva,Dr Poulis and Katie for the warm welcome, your time and for showing us around.

Really excited to see where this collaboration takes us.

There’s more than one way to get to the same result.

Dental technology is full of different techniques, workflows and opinions. That should be one of our strengths, not a reason to tear each other apart.
If someone achieves a great outcome differently to how you would have done it, that doesn’t automatically make their way wrong.

Having worked across dental nursing, the clinical environment and the laboratory, I genuinely think technicians can be some of the harshest critics of other technicians.

Constructive criticism has its place. Education has its place. Sharing knowledge absolutely has its place.

But so does encouragement.

We’re a small profession. We should be learning from each other, sharing what works and making it easier for the next technician to grow.

Different route. Same destination.

Technicians supporting technicians.
It really shouldn’t be controversial. 🦷 taken in The Hive Dental Laboratory by @cdtemily

Marketing as Brand Building

Are you confusing marketing with sales? 🤔

You’re not alone! Many people think they’re the same, but they actually serve different purposes. Marketing is all about building your brand and letting people know who you are and what you stand for. It’s about creating a cohesive identity that resonates across all platforms.

And it doesn’t stop there! Every interaction—whether it’s a phone call or a delivery—contributes to your marketing. It’s all about the experience you create for your audience.

So, how are you ensuring your marketing and sales strategies work together? Share your thoughts in the comments.
