Mosiuoa “Trilla” Thulo (@mosiuoa_thulo) has been announced as the winner of the fifth annual Takealot (@takealotcom) Heritage Design Challenge, bringing his artwork from QwaQwa, Bloemfontein and Virginia to millions of Takealot delivery boxes across South Africa.

With more than 3 000 entries received and five finalist designs put to a public vote, this year's challenge celebrates the designers interpreting South African heritage through contemporary visual language.

For Thulo, the win is a reminder of what becomes possible when emerging creatives trust their craft and put their work out into the world.

“Sometimes, the dream feels bigger than where you come from, but where you come from should never limit how far you can go.”

Congratulations to Mosiuoa, and thank you to everyone who entered, shared the campaign and voted.

Africa Spotlight turns to Mali and the work of Lamine Badian Kouyaté (@laminebadiankouyate), the designer behind XULY.Bët (@xulybetofficial), whose approach to upcycling and streetwear challenged fashion’s conventions long before sustainability became an industry-wide talking point.

Born in Bamako in 1962, Kouyaté studied fine art in Dakar before moving to Paris, bringing with him an understanding of fabric and reuse shaped in part by his grandmother’s practice of giving textiles a second life. In 1991, he founded XULY.Bët, reworking second-hand garments with visible red seams and taking an unconventional approach to the Paris fashion scene. His influence has since extended from the screen, where Forest Whitaker portrayed a character inspired by him in Robert Altman’s Prêt-à-Porter, to dressing artists including Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Halle Berry and Viola Davis.

More than three decades on, his approach remains relevant to contemporary conversations around circularity, authorship and fashion’s relationship with waste.

‘Funkin’ Fashion Factory 100% Recycled’, a major exhibition dedicated to his work, is on view at MK&G Hamburg until August 2027.

South African artist Mikhailia Petersen (@mikhailiapetersen) returns to RESERVOIR (@_reservoir_) with Genesis, We Were Trying To Build A Home, a solo exhibition exploring displacement, inheritance, identity and belonging through photography, film and installation.

Drawing on family memory and the histories of forced displacement that have shaped Cape Town, Petersen works with sites of personal and collective significance, from ancestral gravestones to the landscapes of District Six. Using natural materials, fire, water and her own body as both subject and site, the artist considers how histories of violence and loss are carried across generations, and how a sense of home might be reconstructed from what remains.

Opening on 16 October at RESERVOIR in Cape Town, the exhibition brings together a new body of photographic work, Petersen’s first video work and an installation at KIOSK by RESERVOIR.

‘Genesis, We Were Trying To Build A Home’ runs until 27 November 2026.

For performance art duo KRAS (@kras000000), identity is not fixed. Their upcoming unreleased music video SSSB, shot by Ed Young (@edyoungwork), takes this idea into a surreal visual world, following a young queer person leaving their hometown in search of a life beyond what has been prescribed to them.

A surreal exploration of fluid identity, transformation and performance, the video sees KRAS members Brandon and Duncan take on the forms of a cat and dog — alter egos caught somewhere between who we are, who we perform and who we want to become.

With music produced by Sexxus (@sexxus_muzak) and remixed by Maxwell Simons (@maxwell_simons), SSSB extends KRAS’ ongoing performance practice into a visual work about shedding, reconstruction and becoming.

When @erykahbadu co-signed Lesotho-raised rapper and producer @savehxpe, a moment turned into a story, and the story turned into a career. Born Tshepo Motolo in Maseru, he has since featured Freddie Gibbs on 'HANDOUT (Remix)' while producing the bulk of his music and building the visual world around it, all with an ease that rarely slips.

We spoke to saveHXPE about his mother's ear for music, the diasporic friendships that shaped him and why he still hopes he is carrying Lesotho onto the global stage the right way.
