OPEN CALL. 📞

Plaɘground is calling for visual artists working across Cape Town’s underground: painting, illustration, graffiti, photography, mixed media, all welcome.

We’re looking for work that hasn’t been made for approval. Made because it had to exist, not because it’ll perform.

Selected artists will take part in Beneath the Surface, a group exhibition at District Studios on November 5th.

Submissions close Sunday, October 10th.

How to apply: link in bio for the questionnaire, submit examples of your selected work.

Thank you @twygmag for the invite to be the keynote speaker on day two of the @africatextiletalks - textile is and will always be my first love…

My talk, ‘isiShweshwe as a living archive of hybridity and defiance’ will be live on @twygmag soon…

S/O to all the speakers and participants who presented such thoughtful and interesting discussions around textile, the economy, social and political significance, innovative ways of producing, etc… 👏🏾

Not to bring up the elephant in the room, that green thing on my hand… I had surgery and was discharged the day before this talk but I wasn’t going to miss what I had committed myself to, book me for things, I will never not show up…

Judging the ‘Textile Innovation Student Challenge’ curated by @tandekilemkize was a highlight, to see how future generations are thinking about textiles and materiality was so heartwarming - the kids are going to be alright… Congratulations to all the participants 🫂👏🏾

On my flight back home, I sat behind @tanyazack1 and her book ‘The Chaos Precinct: Johannesburg as a Port City’ has been my nighttime read and is so timely with everything happening in the city around foreigners and them ‘taking’ your jobs… lol… whoever thought to gift us these deserves a raise!

Thank you @hm @imiloacollective @vandawatershed @guzangs @cec_magazine 🫂
