Breakfast corner..

I inherited this table which is perfect for a family of three. The picture finally went up yesterday @catherinewatersantiques and I couldn’t be happier with it.
A couple of @tomdixonstudio chairs we’ve had for ever and a @stokkebaby chair we’ve dragged from London -NY-Somerset which even I love to sit on. Also a perfect stool to grab a vase from my highest shelf.
Together with vintage and collected things always. 💗🤎 and flowers from the garden … by @ceceelargent

Turned the walkway into the old theatre into a potting shed for now.

I’m desperate to resurrect the theatre but that will have to wait for now.

It’s right outside the orangery so perfect spot for a few tomato’s.

Back working on this foot stool. In my zone mixing bits of an old verdure tapestry I found at an antiques fair, with some velvet off cut kindly donated by @linwood_fabric

I have completely rebuilt the stool. When I stripped it back I found it was curved. Took out and refurbished the rusty springs. Washed the horse hair for reuse. Re webbed and started building up again. Finally at the top layer. Can’t wait to have it completed. It’s a beauty. by @ceceelargent

The Master Bath

I was reminded of how much I love these tiles today.

There is something very calming about living in a space you have designed. Everything selected for your own eye. 🧘‍♀️
These tiles had me at hello. Both the floor and shower tiles were reclaimed by the brilliant @maitlandandpoate .

What I love about reclaimed tiles is the variation and depth of colour. It stops the space feeling blocky. Even though it’s effectively a series of blocks. The colour variation breaks that. It’s very pleasing and easy on the eye. The brick pattern on the floor further breaking the blockiness.
The hexagons in the shower remind me of snake skin..🐍 which I love and they are sort of matt and chalky looking. Heaven.

The boot room.

There’s been a lot of love for this room. So I’m popping it back up here. I wonder if we’re all a little bit drawn to the nostalgia of yesteryear. But this room wasn’t here when we bought the house.
It was created in the build. We found the original flag stones under Lino and concrete.

I felt we needed a wet area immediately on entering the back door. Before it was part of an old utility room.

A sink big enough to wash the dog, to grow veg and bring it in here to clean. I found this one which dates to 1850s on eBay. And you better believe I fought for it!

We took down a corridor wall to make the most of a dual aspect. And built another wall to create a pantry next door. ( as yet still unfinished!)

The warm colour Split Pink by @littlegreenepaintcompany matched with a rich Ganache by the same works to soothe the area somehow. It’s forgiving and tempers the cool of the floor.

The kitchen part 4 the window recess- after and before.

This room sold me the house and in particular these windows. There are three in a row in the kitchen and another two in the adjoining dining room.

The light comes through them in a unique way. Refracted by the glass covered terrace outside. So despite being full south facing the light is never overwhelming.

As you can see from the before this part of the house didn’t need much work. I mean we sanded and treated the floor and replaced the radiators. Painted obviously. But it was all about the windows. And the couple who lived here previously loved this kitchen as much as I do.

We tried a rectangular table here ( see the last image) before we started works. But I found it irritating. If you were on the window side you missed the view and if you were looking out and centrally placed you had a blocked view where the alcove is.
So..
I decided to use my grandfathers old table, It’s round and fits in one window perfectly. We sit here all the time. We’re a family of three so when there are no guests this is us. The other side is intended for arm chairs but for now it has this old rocking chair I found in a second hand shop in New York .

I found the wooden bobbin lanterns @oka which are softening. Rather than metal ones. They also take up space but don’t command it. Being open sided.

TV in the kitchen, essential for Christmas Day if nothing else! And I stash my vase collection in the alcove for easy access.

Dividing the space really worked. It’s where I spend 80% of my time at home..and I’m sure it will keep evolving as I find more armchairs.

We’ve started renting our beautiful home as a location for photo shoots.
We’ve had an incredible response with lots of bookings.

The bit I hadn’t considered in all of it was how lovely it would be to be surrounded by creatives again. How validating it would be after working so hard on the house and above all the comments.

Most recently “walking into your home is like a big hug” 🥰

Don’t get me wrong it’s incredibly disruptive but the house works so well for photoshoots it seems mad not to. Now I just need to work on what the crew are all eating when they’re here! Less plastic, more grown in the walled garden….

Looking forward to seeing where this takes us and who walks through the door next. 🤎

Merchant Archive 2016

I remember this shoot well because Honor was born 5 days later 🩷⭐️
Can’t resist posting the occasional shot of @merchantarchive Feels like another lifetime now. But still so lovely to reflect on.

This collar was pleated in silk in North London at a wonderful old pleating studio. The jumpsuit is also silk, French. And it was all made in a factory in London.

I was always so proud of our Made in England label. I was proud that the clothes hadn’t been made abroad and flown in using valuable air miles. I was proud to provide jobs for seamstresses and make clothes with integrity.

Of course it wasn’t perfect from a sustainability standpoint point. The clothes were sold all over the world and did their miles after they left our hands.

And if I had scratched the surface of my supply chain, would I have discovered that my French silk was in-fact finished in France but woven in China? Who knows now..
So much has changed in the 7 years since I closed the business on that front.

But quietly these things meant a lot to me. Integrity in what you do, no matter what that is, care for the materials you use and careful selection of those materials. Care with how much you waste and the impact on our planet. All transfers no matter what you’re doing in life.
For me in my career that’s been in clothes and homes.I can sleep at night because they were made/ built with integrity.
But also for the owners to feel great in, both physically and mentally. With love and passion and a desire to make something the very best it can be without compromising what’s important. by @ceceelargent

Was just walking past this room and couldn’t resist a wee snap.
It’s North East facing so always surprises me to see light coming in..
I deliberately kept it natural and moody in colour and it’s one of my favourite rooms as a result.
Feels very calm.

The layout was changed which involved getting through an 80cm wall. But in blocking up the first entryway we created a wardrobe which is what’s behind the antique wall hanging..
As ever most furniture is antique or reclaimed.
