It was a pleasure to host artist Niamh Seana Meehan @niamhseanameehan and practitioner Cecelia Graham @cecelia_ac for a research and development residency at the Tea Houses💧🌿

“Our short residency in Kilkenny unfolded through warmth, generosity, and deep attentiveness to place. From our welcome at @the_powerhouse_callan by Seamus Kelly to warm drinks at @fennellys_of_callan with Etaoin, we felt guided by a strength of community and the way local life is closely intertwined with the surrounding ecosystems.

Our days moved with the River Nore – from visiting the Tea Houses with @_rachel_botha_ , lunch at @theloopcafefreshford, to learning about projects such as @acornprojectcollaboration and @thenorevision with Maura Brennan.

Walking shaped our time: through Callan, along the River Nore, and around Newpark Marsh Eco Park, before marking Brigid’s Day at the @butlergallery. We explored Callan with @rosie__lynch, a tour from the Moat to the @workhouseunion. Another day we shared tea and fire at @brownmountaindiamond with @carlgiffney. We left after a morning stonemasonry workshop with Seamus, guiding us through the process of carving small spirals and swirls. As a final gesture, @seamus6083 gifted us handmade candle holders, a warm token of our time in Kilkenny.”

🪑🪚🤝 this bench slides apart, you can expand your seat to fit a friend

Back in March, me & my dad built a bench. Modelled on an open source design by Todd Dermody, it was a chance to learn new skills together, sharing tricks learnt from rural living, the creation of make-shift tools and our respective times spent hanging around a furniture factory (my dad, when he was a kid) or working in artist-led spaces ~~

>> an exercise in: checking measurements once, then twice, then thrice / tentatively getting to grips with a circular saw / inaccurately using a set square / avoiding knots in wood when drilling / taking apart and putting back together again / learning that a handsaw will always save the day.

~~ accompanied by a text inspired by farmhack.org whose online Tool Library details concepts for new tools and mechanisms shared by those working on small farms, and the book The Anarchists Workbench by Christopher Schwarz.

💌 Included in ‘Take Hold’, a show curated by Rachel Botha at CCA Derry back in Spring ‘25. The bench a lil resting place for those who wanted a seat when watching husk’s video in the same show ~ an accidental collaboration but the sweetest one !! taken in Cookstown by @cecelia_ac

🤝🌀 Companion Planting x Praxis 🌀🤝
🗓️ Monday 29 September 2025, 5.30-7.30pm at PS2, Belfast

On Monday 29 September, Tara McGinn will be hosting a special session of Companion Planting as part of their role of Ulster Recruitment Officer at Praxis Artists’ Union 💐 The session will be held at our friends @pssquaredbelfast

During the session, Tara will give an insight into the work of Praxis and Trade Unions in advocating for workers rights, including self-employed artists and those working within institutions. The session will focus on the north, and will include conversation based around our needs as a sector within the island 💌

To join, sign up at the link above ⤴️

~~

🫶🏻 Praxis: The Artists’ Union of Ireland envisions a progressive and just society that values artists and art. They’re an artists union which recognises that art is an occupation that takes time, training, and risks, and believe that artists should be compensated fairly for this work. Their aim is to unite artists and to give them the power to influence their working conditions.

🌱 Companion Planting is a series of ongoing gatherings that interrogate embedded institutional practices and bureaucratic mechanisms within the arts sector. The sessions hope to think through ways of reconfiguring arts organisations, seeking genuine means of supporting creative practitioners in the north of Ireland and creating space to imagine how we can work collectively to uphold one another.

~~

TONIGHT:

🌱Companion Planting🌱
Led by Cecelia Graham @cecelia_ac

A series of ongoing gatherings that take the form of an informal discussion group, Companion Planting creates space for the interrogation of embedded institutional practices and bureaucratic mechanisms within the arts ecology as a whole.

In the sessions, we discuss possible ways of reconfiguring arts organisations, seeking new and genuine means of support for creative practitioners in the north of Ireland; whether it’s ways of working that exist outside of monetary exchange, the implementation of more transparent policy, contracts and institutional procedures, or re-imagining how we can work collectively to uphold one another through, for example, holding institutions accountable.

In the gatherings, we often share readings, listenings, watchings and examples that identify ways of supporting practitioners, staff and (often underpaid) contractors as they journey through institutions.

💌 To join Companion Planting, send an email to cecelia.ac.graham@gmail.com with the subject line COMPANION PLANTING. Everyone is welcome. by @cecelia_ac

🛝 Notes towards an informal hedge // Walk carefully, well loved one 🛝

Two lil pieces of writing in catalyst atm ~ one tucked into the pocket of overalls I used to wear during installs & another breezily hanging on an architect’s blueprint rack

‘Notes towards an informal hedge’ puts forward a speculative structure for institutions ~ a hinge or double spiral with a shared and moveable centre 🌀🤝 A proposition to occupy gaps and leaks, withdrawing resources from commodification; re-configuring frameworks that hoard authority; and prioritising the distribution of skills and knowledge as opposed to narratives of growth ~~ loose, soft, wayward, reasons and venues.

‘Walk carefully, well loved one’ is a redacted text thinking about how bodies exist within arts organisations & an old catalyst contract I found ~ it’s reworked from a text i wrote for @luminpress Local 37 transmission project a few years ago and is propped on a chair that holds a door open; the hinge in constant suspension ⛓️‍💥

💌 thank u to soft fiction projects for printing, husk for editing & organising & drilling & supporting, daf for editing, davy for lighting, simon for the photos & catalyst for painting & looking after !!

🌀 The garden cannot be unplanted: ‘Dream your friends forward’ 🌀
Tuesday 3 September 2024, 5.30pm - 7.30pm
💌 To attend, email dreamyourfriendsforward@gmail.com

‘Dream your friends forward’ is a collaboration between artists and chefs, Phillip McCrilly and Moonhyung Lee, alongside curator Cecelia Graham in the form of a workshop.

‘Dream your friends forward’ brings together a group to collectively engage in and consider the act of neighbourly foraging 🌱 We will contemplate how acts of companionship and exchange enable us to cultivate new ways of being that put forward alternative economies, and build upon forms of knowledge that emerge from our surrounding environment, neighbours and soon-to-be friendships.

The workshop consists of two parts 🌷 First, we will forage together in the Ormeau area of Belfast, where we will encounter seasonal ingredients that contribute to the second part of the workshop - the creation of a batch of fruit syrup. The syrup will be made in an alleyway that runs between Ardmore and Rossmore avenue in Belfast, made with neighbours and residents.

Throughout the workshop, we will discuss sustainable foraging practices that encourage we harvest ethically, and think about how this slow and thoughtful act creates the foundation for empathetic and neighbourly approaches to artistic practice.

🤝 ‘Dream your friends forward’ is a collaboration between the artists Phillip and Moon, and curator and writer Cecelia Graham. The workshop forms part of the wider project ‘The garden cannot be unplanted’, which also includes the event ‘Feeding Houses’ as part of a @9ftincommon commission.

~~

With thanks to British Art Network for funding the workshop.

ℹ️ We advise that you wear comfortable shoes, and bring waterproofs just in case! Please send an access rider for the event to dreamyourfriendsforward@gmail.com if you wish.

photos from this past summer when i spent some time with @davidmichaelcleary in Abergavenny & @louisedhobson in Barry~~ two real life angels doing v angelic things !! <3 amongst a too busy year, it was nice to spend time sharing & reading & having v generous conversations that have helped me plot the path towards an initiative that i’m working on called ‘informal hedges’🌀🌱🤝

~~~~
‘informal hedges’ is a future initiative that instigates playful artistic and curatorial interventions within institutional sites, governance, policies and decision making mechanisms. In challenging extractive working, institutional notions of ‘professionalism’ and siloed working practices, I hope that informal hedges can help create space to re-configure the potential of arts organisations as places in which collaborative, non-hierarchical working practices and networks of support can grow <3
i am v grateful to have support from BAN & a nice upcoming residency to help towards the development of this throughout the upcoming year 💌
🌊⛓feel v lucky to have spent a lot of time under the river lagan at the end of March setting up for Christopher Steenson’s Let it run all over me, a site specific soundwork presented as a one day event within the Lagan Weir, as part of me and Grace Jackson’s curatorial residency at pssquared.
The work responds to the aural architecture of the Lagan Weir, a vital framework that guides the water’s tidal fluctuations and monitors the surrounding ecology 🌿🦆 loved hearing about Chris’ process & how his work captured the acoustic foundations of the Weir and its underwater tunnel ~ each of the sounds featured in the work passed through structures and mediums relating to the Weir, including the water that surrounds it & the concrete expanse of its infrastructure.
after talking for almost a year it was v amazing to see this come together 🤝 so so grateful to the Lagan Weir team for making our dreams come true (& for sharing all the amazing and v important work that they do with us)!!! Thank u thank u to Chris, Davy Mahon, Peter Mutschler, Martin King, Michael at Eclipse Disco Centre, Simon Mills & always always my amazing collaborator Grace @gracesbum <3
