‘A few days later, I receive an email with the subject line Drill. Attached is an image of a strange tool-like object. It looks like something described in a science-fiction text, a frying pan with a handle much too large for its circular body…’ 🛠

’the consolation of carpenters’ is a stunning text written alongside Ornaments of Prospect @catalystarts by the shows curator Cecelia Graham @cecelia_ac . It considers slow agricultural practices, multi-species futures, rurality and science fiction, collaborative practice, tools of pasts and possible times ahead. Running through the publication are the intersections of Samuel Delany’s Dhalgren, laser cutting CAD diagrams, Cecelia’s anecdotal experiences and references to our time together. 🧆 It’s a beautiful text which we feel so lucky to have paired with our exhibition.

It’s available as a riso printed pamphlet (with blue staples!) at the exhibition or if you would like one but can’t make it to Catalyst dm either us or catalyst and we can mail you one for free! x 💌

‘To sustain and create infrastructure on a plot of land is a process of world-making, often achieved across years and generations, alongside human and non-human worlds. The multiple rhythms involved in this agricultural work are at odds with the productionist aim to progress into the future, effectively and swiftly.’

🌊 Let it run all over me 🌊
~~Booking link in bio~~

Spaces are filling up. This is a one-day event. Snooze if you lose, etcetera etcetera.

Press Release Excerpt:

Let it run all over me is a site-specific sound work in three parts that responds to the aural architecture of the Lagan Weir, a vital framework that guides both the water’s tidal fluctuations, as well as monitoring the surrounding ecology.

The work is informed by several site visits carried out by Steenson, during which he made underwater recordings of the Lagan, as well as capturing the unique acoustic fingerprint of the Weir’s underwater tunnel. Each of the sounds featured in the work has passed through structures and mediums relating to the Weir – be it the watery expanse that surrounds it, or the concrete material of its very infrastructure. Spending time with those who work at the site, recordings were also taken from the often invisible acts of labour undertaken daily by the team who work there – such as the opening and shutting of the five gates that protect the city from flooding, and the journeys made daily by the team to record the surrounding ecology and monitor the river’s health. The result is a work that presents a layered scale through which we can listen in on the environments sustained by the river.

‘Ornaments of Prospect’ by collaborative duo Beau W Beakhouse & Sadia Pineda Hameed @catalystarts - what does a future look like when tools are created without purpose? ⛏🗜🪚🔧

So much richness in these works, from the potential of industrial waste to create new speculations, to considering anti-colonial strategies of resistance through reimagining the Filipino Bolo - a tool used both for agriculture and warfare throughout its history.

Gorgeous collaboration with curator @cecelia_ac who has written ‘the consolation of the carpenters’ to accompany, a response in three parts.

hey HEY! v excited to be working with the beautiful @cecelia_ac on Ornaments of Prospect! Opens this Thurs, Catalyst Arts in Belfast!! 😇 here are some install pics, making pics and other pics!

Posted @withregram • @catalystarts ⚒️❤️‍🔥 Opening Thursday 2 March 2023, 6-8pm: ‘Ornaments of Prospect’, a solo exhibition with collaborators Beau W Beakhouse and Sadia Pineda Hameed at Catalyst Arts ❤️‍🔥 ⚒️

We’re excited to open our next project, ‘Ornaments of Prospect’ with Beau W Beakhouse and Sadia Pineda Hameed, on the next Late Night Art - Thursday 2 March from 6-8pm 🍻

The installation sets out to reimagine tool making and methods of metal production, and how this might lead to collective and alternative modes of communication, knowledge and craft.

Expanding on rural and agricultural use of tools, ‘Ornaments of Prospect’ traverses alternative worlds of steel production and industrial backdrops of science-fiction to open a dialogue surrounding the complex and multiple approaches to tools, their manufacture and expanded use.

Through experiments in metalwork and heat treatment, the duo investigate the potential of waste and the speculative futures that can arise from skeletal cut outs rendered non-functional in the process of crafting tools. The work envisions the speculative tools and collaborations that can emerge from these spaces of absence, considering the new languages and actions that objects with an unknown function can unfold.

The exhibition was developed alongside Cecelia Graham, who has written a short text ‘the consolation of carpenters’ in response 🔨 🔥

‘Ornaments of Prospect’ runs until Saturday 1 April 2023. Our opening hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 11-5pm. Further information can be found at the link in our bio ⤴️

The exhibition is supported by Arts Council Northern Ireland and Jerwood Arts New Work Fund @jerwoodarts

"Untitled (Intervention-performance)" 2023 - on show as part of URGENCIES (2023) until March 18th

"Husk Bennett has created a new, site-specific work responding to the news headlines on ‘Blue Monday’, known as the ‘most depressing day of the year’. On Monday 16 January 2023, Husk spent 5 hours in CCA creating 40 new drawings inspired by the articles, headlines and advertisements from the day’s newspapers. Blue Monday itself was invented by a travel company. The work looks at the trivialisation of societal issues by the media and capitalism, as well as investigating artists’ labour and time. The work will remain on display throughout the exhibition with individual drawings falling under the broad categories of headlines, labour, clickbait, media, consumption, production, publicity."

Thanks to all who came to the opening of URGENCIES last week, as well as to my intervention on 16th Jan and to the whole team @ccadld for the support + opportunity :) the show is very very good, you should go ! NOW !!!!!!!!!

🌆Week One: A Change in the Cells with Tara McGinn 🌆
A residency that runs until 4 February 2023

~

‘An exhibition, that is now a slow residency…

A body of work, that was going to materialise in the form of an exhibition, reduced to tears and reformed to incubate in a residency, now gradually oozing in the form of an arrangement, in the form of fragments, with the best of intentions to represent ongoing research that perhaps may never stop moving.

I immediately thought about filling up the space, the spaces, each alcove and flat plane and curved wall and window frame is tangible surface area for me to manipulate. I was unfamiliar with the room and my constant referral to it as a “space” only emphasised my disconnect from it further, creating an obnoxious anxiety in my brain, reminding me consistently that I was unprepared.

Now, setting up shop, this first week has been a slow and steady joy, adopting the PS2 gallery to be a temporary second studio, I’ve observed it’s black moulds, metal vents, and marigold mouldings, nestling into its office brown carpet that has developed a love/hate relationship with me.

Starting with what I have and working with what I can, this time ahead of me which had once felt caustic, has thawed into something organic in the January rain. Continuing my ideas from my last residency at the CCA Derry, I’ve noticed the daffodils are once again starting to grow.’

With thanks to Belfast City Council for generously funding this project.
