Many survivors, myself included, observe September as Sepsis Awareness Month. This year, I want to highlight some simple facts about sepsis. Did you know sepsis requires rapid treatment for survival?

In undergrad, I had a professor who’d frequently say, “time is brain.” As a young, naive student, this just sounded like a silly saying that later turned into an inside joke between classmates. But what my professor was trying to convey is the significance of time in terms of life-saving measures, and most importantly, tissue death.

I advise everyone to take time this month to learn the early signs of infection and sepsis in the unfortunate case you or a loved one are affected. Response time matters. Remember, time is brain.
