As @solcakeinteriors, I took a (very special) meeting today behind this building, and I had such a full circle moment and feeling of gratitude. I had to pause and take a photograph and so many memories and feelings flooded into my heart.

This was my first huge turnkey project back when I had just turned 21 years old, freshly baking at the start of my corporate interior design and architecture career.

I was living in my home city, Durban, at the time and my work flew me to Cape Town to assist with directing the project. I arrived on site with my curiosity, nerves, pink hard hat and a clipboard with my drawings. I had no idea what to expect, just that this was my project and I could finally be a bossy boots 🤣

Surrounded by a group of very tall men, when I introduced myself, I was asked something along the lines of “Who are you? We are waiting for the architect”. and with courage I said “I am the architect.” and that was the start of a very long journey of trying to understand how to be taken seriously as a woman in the very male-dominated field of construction.

I have now been in the trade for just under 10 years, and you couldn’t pay me enough to back down. I take up space, and I will continue to take space — even more than before! Not in a “hah I’ll show you!” way but in a “Wow, I am actually so worthy of being in these rooms… Of DESIGNING these rooms.” Unlike before, I now only work with people who are aligned with my ethics. I say no to clients who are not. I walk away when I am unsafe. I protect myself in ways I couldn’t have done in the past.

This timeline has been slow but so necessary. So many layers are finally shedding all at once.

With a people-first lens, so much compassion and empathy, and patience (still working on this hahaha) — I believe this journey will continue for a lifetime.

And I’m so excited because I’m actually only getting started 💛 by @celinedeeves

Life lately has been so gorgeous I can’t cope! Sometimes I wake up at 2 AM wanting to dive into technical packs bc it can be SO stressful as I’ve had the most projects ever since starting my turnkey business, @solcakeinteriors, but I’m so wrapped in gratitude 🤍

1. Bringing warmth and colour into my world every day 💛🧡
2. Public speaking (pushed myself to do this, was a goal of mine this year - ✅)
3. My orchid aka Amazonian princess is BLOOMING after some TLC
4. Hosting a Women’s Circle - so dear to my heart ♥️
5. Watching Lady and the Tramp after SO many years
6. Sunset walks to ground my toes

9. Angel and Delilah - my best friends on a residential project I’m creating at the moment
10. Pilates (taking a backseat :( since being so busy but I make it there at least once a week - dw I’m still a matcha member)

She motivates me every single day because she believed in me since day 1, when I couldn’t even fathom that I could achieve what I have so far
17. A site visit in Mouille Point, right next to the block of apartments I stayed in in 2021 when I was planning my move to Cape Town.

In between, I experienced; one of the most painful break ups of my entire life, moving to Abu Dhabi for nearly half a year and then having a stroke (eh?) and losing my vision not knowing if I could create interiors or even drive again…. Mama I made it and I got here almost 3 years later. What a full circle moment.

Celebrated my gorgeous Daddio turning 80 years old and still being able to cycle 40kms and beat me in a walking / endurance competition any day.

Went back to my heart of hearts — the Midlands. We stayed in an old church converted Airbnb, and convinced we were visited at 4AM by Margaret from the graveyard outside the kitchen.

Revisited Hebron Haven, where I was at a birthday party, at just a couple of months old! This place was a family staple every time we went camping together at Midmar dam. Best memories ever of quad bikes, braai’s and Easter egg hunts with my cousins. 🩷🩷

Pined after some authentic Cowgirl boots and then made a wiser financial decision to not spend R4,000 on them.

Took Milan to @theoysterbox for the first time and he experienced the wild pigeons and delicious snacks. Although we don’t eat red meat or pork, so we explained this and asked for Peppadews instead of Porchetta, and ended up with loads of Pepperoni instead 😭

Visited @meankatcafe_durban. So nunus. And HILARIOUS considering my Dad was harassed for his milkshake until he gave in with a tiny dot 😂

Milan fell in love with a chunky ginger fella.

I loooove Iguanas. Mushu is his name. I would’ve taken him home if I could, but Bao may be a lil freaked out to share his bed with such a pokey dude.

Smol man. Healing in this relationship too. 😁♥️

Again, staying in the church. Was the worst night’s sleep but an amazing and novel experience, to celebrate my parents’ birthdays (they are born 3 days apart)!
