Very grateful to have been involved in another SharkAdemy last week. As always, it’s the people that make these things memorable.
An incredible bunch of people, full of passion and drive.

Here’s some of the moments in the field, from being in the water with the blues, observing dolphins and tuna feeding.
Media participant @lizard.vision capturing the water entries.
A ridiculous moment with a double rainbow while with the sharks.
And everyone enjoying the beach in Pembrokeshire on the last night.

SharkAdemy is the first shark resident training program in the UK, and it gives some great opportunities to learn about the shark science and media world from industry professionals. Make sure you follow if you’re interested in learning more 👉🏽 @sharkademyuk

This picture perfectly sums up my sleepiness after this years sharkademy!

But what a week it has been, great weather conditions and students. Really love being involved with this annual training residency as it fully allows me to indulge in my passion of photographing these animals and engage and teach people to do the same.

There is nothing better than having a group of passionate marine advocates when they swim with a shark for the very first time! by @celticdeep

SharkAdemy 2026 is underway!!

A week of workshops, and in-field training in the heart of Pembrokeshire.

There was a huge number of applicants this year, it was a hard process reviewing them all. Thank you to everyone who applied.

We’re excited to see this group grow and develop over the coming days! taken in Dale, Pembrokeshire by @celticdeep

Last week, members of the Project Seagrass team and @celticdeep delivered training with members of @pembrokeshire_freedivers surrounding how to undertake a reproductive survey! 🌱

Reproductive surveys allow us to understand the timings of key reproductive milestones within particular seagrass meadows. As part of in-water surveys at Frenchman's Bay in Dale we worked together to investigate the number of reproductive shoots present in addition to the stage of reproduction of the seeds.

Thank you to @windsweptwatersports for providing paddleboards for this session!

Meet the Atlantic wreckfish.

Not many creatures have the ability to outshine the blue sharks. The wreckfish might just be one of them.

Coming up from the seabed it took shelter under the boat... and amongst us! On the last couple of trips these guys have won the hearts of all who encountered them.

Also known as Stone bass the wreckfish (Polyprion Americanus) a deep water fish that can live to 90 years old!

A fully grown wreckfish can reach about 2m in length and weigh 100kg!

Despite being a youngster this guy seemed quite unfazed by the four or five blue sharks around us.

Plenty of wildlife spotted on offshore trips over the weekend, from Bluefin tuna, blue sharks, common dolphins, gannets and even fin whales (no footage of those sadly) 🐋

Huge thanks to @emma_underthewaves and @richgrees from @celticdeep for inviting me on! And to Luke and @emzodyssey from @odysseyseaadventures for having me on to film some shark angling for my upcoming film ‘Operation Porbeagle’ 🦈

There’s something almost miraculous about seeing Blue Sharks (Prionace glauca) in the wild.

They are the most heavily exploited pelagic shark on Earth, estimates indicate between 7-20 million sharks are caught annually as they undertake their vast migrations.

They account for roughly 60% of the global reported shark catch, making up 41% of the international fin trade and 36% of the traded shark meat.

The global ex-vessel value of the blue shark meat and fin trade is estimated at $411 million, surpassing the value of individual bluefin tuna species!

And yet, remarkably, the Blue Shark persists.

Unlike many large sharks, which grow slowly, mature late and produce very few young, Blue Sharks have an unusually productive life history. Females commonly give birth to 25–50 pups, with exceptional litters exceeding 100, and they can reach sexual maturity at around 4–6 years old.

They also occupy a vast range, occurring throughout the world’s temperate and tropical oceans, dominating the vast open epipelagic zones. Fortunately they also have a reasonable post-release survival rate of between 60-80%.

Together, these adaptations give Blue Sharks a remarkable capacity to withstand levels of exploitation that would devastate many other large shark species.

But resilience is not immunity and seeing them in the wild, knowing that those individual’s have managed to run the commercial fishing vessel gauntlet is a privilege.

A recent boat trip out to the Celtic Deep had the perfect conditions that allowed me to use my drone! I was able to get plenty of shots of the blue sharks in the water around us, including one individual that circled the entire boat!

It’s really interesting to get another view of the sharks and to see how they interact with the space around us during the encounters 🦈
