POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Thank you @desrequinsetdeshumains for having me along! The work they are doing to conserve such a special aggregation of Porbeagle sharks is fantastic, go check them out! 🦈

Sadly I wasn’t able to spot any Porbeagles during my time in Brittany, so all Porbeagle footage in this video is thanks to @desrequinsetdeshumains 🌊

🦈 A closer look at shark biology.

I had the opportunity to examine a range of shark specimens and get a much closer look at some of their incredible anatomy. I loved getting my camera in close to the skin what looks like scales is actually made up of thousands of tiny dermal denticles, which help protect the shark and reduce drag as it swims.

I also got to see some really interesting specimens at different stages of development, including young sharks still attached to their yolk sacs, which provide nourishment during development. A few of the specimens also still had fishing hooks present, which was a sobering reminder of the interactions these animals can have with human activities.

I found it fascinating from a scientific perspective, but also quite moving to see these animals up close. It definitely gave me an even greater appreciation for the importance of understanding and conserving sharks.

A brilliant hands-on insight into shark biology and a reminder of just how much there still is to learn about these incredible animals. 🦈🔬🌊

Thank you @marinemumbles for the pics 🥰

Blue shark from last year. Sadly fate decided I wasn’t going to get on any trips to see these beautiful animals but it’s ok there’s always next year. #blueshark #pembrokeshire #shark #underwater #diving

Blue sharks (Prionace glauca)🦈

Saw these beautiful bad boys in the middle of the Celtic Deep with @sharkademyuk ! 🌊

Incredibly iridescent, they look more purple than blue sometimes. They are a pelagic (open water) species and live around the UK 🪼

Sharkademy 2026 🦈💙

What an experience. So grateful to have spent this week learning, laughing and sharing a genuine passion for sharks and conservation with such an incredible group of people.

This is only a little glimpse of what we got up to and I’m leaving with so many memories, new knowledge and a full heart ❤️

I’ve taken away so much from this experience, but the people I got to share it with will definitely be one of my favourite parts. 🥹

Thank you to all you beautiful humans for making it so special. 🦈🌊

Very grateful to have been involved in another SharkAdemy last week. As always, it’s the people that make these things memorable.
An incredible bunch of people, full of passion and drive.

Here’s some of the moments in the field, from being in the water with the blues, observing dolphins and tuna feeding.
Media participant @lizard.vision capturing the water entries.
A ridiculous moment with a double rainbow while with the sharks.
And everyone enjoying the beach in Pembrokeshire on the last night.

SharkAdemy is the first shark resident training program in the UK, and it gives some great opportunities to learn about the shark science and media world from industry professionals. Make sure you follow if you’re interested in learning more 👉🏽 @sharkademyuk

I've had a couple of days this last week experimenting with moonlit mackerel, doing these smaller studies with a larger composition in mind. 3 years ago I spent an amazing night out in the Celtic Deeps, and amongst many memorable encounters, including feisty blue sharks and common dolphins hunting, seeing thousands of mackerel plankton feeding stood out for me. There's wasn't a full moon that evening, and without a torch it looked pretty black underwater, but these aren't about trying to be realistic, more a search for an image that might communicate the sense of mystery and magic the experience evoked. I've done a lot of sea trout nocturnes over the years, generally mixing a dark colour from a blue and a brown, and then adjusting tonally with white. I think the mackerel may have worked in the same style, but I've been inspired by the work of two American painters, Jamie Wyeth and Mia Bergeren, to use more colour. Neither of these two are what I'm after, although the right hand one isn't complete yet, so I'll do more until I get what I'm after - not sure what that is until I hopefully find it !

This picture perfectly sums up my sleepiness after this years sharkademy!

But what a week it has been, great weather conditions and students. Really love being involved with this annual training residency as it fully allows me to indulge in my passion of photographing these animals and engage and teach people to do the same.

There is nothing better than having a group of passionate marine advocates when they swim with a shark for the very first time!
