He Smiled Last by @johnjosephwardwriter
⭐⭐⭐⭐

Welcome to Kirke Island where the women are seductive, drinks are flowing, and the party never ends. Your stay is courtesy of the owners. You'll never want to go home. Strike that. You won't be leaving.

This book grabbed me at the Prologue and I read it in one sitting. The first quarter of the book is slow as the characters are introduced. I enjoyed finding out how much the four friends meant to one another. I liked them and I wanted them to be safe; even though, they make horrible decisions. From the minute they receive an invitation to a private island in the Adriatic, the suspense ramps up. My inner Mom voice was screaming, " Don't go!". Once on the island, the sense of foreboding is overwhelming. The last half of the story is crazy good with a somewhat sad but satisfying finale. (I'm being vague because I don't want to give anything away.)

I did enjoy my stay on the island because I got to go home. This story is atmospheric and emits Epstein Island for adult vibes. The promises of fun and debauchery from soul-sucking elites gave me chills. The horror elements are well done and vivid but it's the eerie feeling I had while reading that really sold me. Before the cold months settle in, take one more vacation and visit Kirke Island. You won't regret it. This is the author's debut novel and it's a stunner!

A huge thank you to the author for sending me his book. My review is voluntary and all words and opinions are my own.. by @cemetarydancer

Please Wake Up by @beardsley_books
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Traumatized by a tragic event that destroyed his childhood and changed him forever, teenage Boone just wants to re-establish his relationship with his mother. He begins spending his alone time in the barn, a somewhat magical place he once cherished when his father was alive. The barn, he thought, could heal people. It would make them better. He would take care of them.

I find it hard to believe this is Nicholas Beardsley's debut novella. There is a certain warmth to his writing. It's as if he truly cares about his characters (I wrote this before I read the author's end notes). He covers the themes of suicide, trauma, and mental illness with a gentle hand as the horrific events unfold. He was not so gentle with my heart. Grief is a cruel villain. Grief kills.

This may be the first time I sympathized with every character in a book. They all felt like family friends. I also can't get over the depth and richness found in such a short story. If you feel like having your heart torn out, read Please Wake Up. This was my first book from this author; it won't be my last. by @cemetarydancer

I'm un-hauling some books to make room on my overflowing 35 year old shelves. I enjoyed each of these books but I won't be reading them again and someone else should get a chance to experience them. I haven't decided if I'm going to take them to Half Price Books or donate them to my library. What do you do with the books you un-haul? No, I won't show the books because it feels mean. 🖤📚 by @cemetarydancer
