The Center for Black Educator Development is proud to sponsor and help organize Teaching Freedom: Philadelphia's Black Dreamkeepers, 1976–2026, open now at Parkway Central Library.

Fifty years of Philadelphia's Black educators: the ones who taught, organized, mentored, and refused to let freedom wait. See their records, images, and voices, all gathered in one room at 1901 Vine Street.

Most of this history has never been exhibited publicly.

The exhibition is open now during library hours.

Teaching Freedom is presented in partnership with Dr. Camika Royal @drcamikaroyal, associates professor of Urban Education Leadership at Morgan State University; Linn Posey-Maddox @linn_e._poseymaddox_, Professor of Urban Education at Temple University; education journalist Benjamin Herold @benjaminherold; the Free Library of Philadelphia; the Philadelphia Department of Records; and Mighty Engine.

Who was the first person who told you, "You'd be a great teacher"?

For a lot of educators, it happened in elementary school. For many Black men, it took until adulthood, and only after another career didn't work out.

Our Founder & CEO @selmekki and @educatorsrising CEO Jeanie Lee wrote for @the_74 about why that sentence matters so much, and why Black boys hear it least.

Read the new opinion piece via our Linktree. A person stands in front of a whiteboard with writings "AZ/US History" and "Advisor." They are wearing glasses, a light blue shirt, and a bow tie. The bottom text on the image reads: "The 74. Male Teachers Say Mentors Got Them There. For Black Men, the Need’s Even Greater. October 15, 2026. by @centerblacked

My first year at @centerblacked's #BMEC a few years ago, I met @akil_lateef during one of his presentations.

Being at that convening made me realize just how important it is for us to gather in community, AND how we need to be intentional about recruiting our Black boys to be teachers, the way we recruit them for sports.

100K less Black teachers is insane, and more has to be done to get us back in the class. (Btw, this year, the Black Men in Education Convening is from November 13-15th in Philly. I hope to see y'all there).

🚨If you wanna see the full convo between me and Professor Parker, comment MATH. ➕✊🏾
