This week we’ve welcomed participants on our Build a Tiny House Short Course to CAT.

The course is a firm favourite with many who’ve joined Dieter and Carwyn to build a tiny home from the ground up as they learn how to:

💚Build the floor and walls of a simple timber frame tiny house
💚Understanding the advantages of different layouts
💚Cladding and insulating the walls
💚Using tools safely
💚Building different roof shapes
💚Installing windows and more…

Here’s Chris Lynn (Lynny), who joined this course earlier this year, to tell us more about what he learnt.

As the climate crisis deepens, can traditional economic growth still deliver social progress?

In June this year, a Roadmap for Eradicating Poverty Beyond Growth was presented to the Human Rights Council in Geneva – a policy toolkit detailing the need for a post-growth approach to the eradication of poverty.

One of the contributors to the UN roadmap was CAT Graduate Gemma Young, whose recommendation was based on the dissertation she completed during her studies on CAT’s MSc in Sustainability and Behaviour Change.

Gemma’s proposal looked at how redesigning financial markets could make investors more accountable for the socio-ecological consequences of the activities they finance.

Read more about Gemma’s contribution and the Roadmap in our recent blog 👇

Luke Neve is a #CATgraduate of our MSc in Sustainable Food and Natural Resources who is now using the knowledge he gained at CAT in his role as North of England Regional Coordinator for Better Food Traders.

Along with gaining practical skills, the course introduced Luke to a community of people who wanted to make a difference in the face of the environmental crisis and helped him assuage his experience of climate anxiety.

Here’s Luke to tell us more…

Yesterday, CAT’s Zero Carbon Britain Innovation Lab was at @ellesmere_college in Shropshire, working with sixth form students from across the region as part of their first ever Climate Conference.

Rachel Tuckett, who leads the Innovation Lab at CAT, joined Amie Andrews from @aberystwyth.university to run a hands-on mini Climate Action Lab.

Through creative activities, students explored the role they can play in responding to the climate emergency, and worked together to develop fresh ideas for a greener future. The workshop offered a model for thinking about transformative change, emphasising the importance of dialogue between different perspectives, imagination, experimentation and collaboration.

CAT’s attendance was supported by the Local Policy and Innovation Partnership (LPIP).

This week, #CATstudents have been deep diving into ecological restoration.

Climate change and other human-induced stresses mean the conditions under which ecosystems have evolved have changed rapidly. At the same time, we need functioning ecosystems to help mitigate against the impacts of climate change and continue providing us with essential resources.

Dr Jane Fisher, Programme Leader for our MSc Sustainability and Adaptation course, explains more about why we teach ecological restoration👇
