As part of our “Saving the Sultan Peak (Kensad) Treasures” Project, the Tagbanua Indigenous People’s Organization (IPO) of Narra, Palawan came together to discuss, draft, and sign a resolution expressing their support and consent for the proposed declaration of Sultan Peak as a Critical Habitat within their ancestral land.

For the Tagbanua community, conservation is not simply about resources or financial gain—it is about ensuring that Sultan Peak is protected for future generations. 🌳✨

“𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆.” And when it comes to protecting Kensad, this spirit of unity is what makes conservation truly meaningful.

This October, we honor the Tagbanua community for their continued participation, leadership, and commitment to protecting Sultan Peak. 💚

Our sincere thanks to the Barangay LGU of Princess Urduja, @rainforesttrust, our funder, and our wonderful volunteers Jaypee Dumip-ig, Erika Jenn Velarde, Ken Andrew Binondo, and Mr. Mark Joshua Arista for standing with us in this conservation journey! 🙌

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁? 🌿

A pristine forest and the ancestral domain of Indigenous Tagbanua and Palaw’an communities who have stewarded this area since time immemorial.
Sultan Peak is home to:
🌱 At least 185 species of flora and fauna
🦜 48 endemic species
🐾 50 globally threatened species
💧 Class AA water bodies, the Philippines’ highest standard of freshwater quality

With the support of all three Barangays of Sultan Peak, Bato-Bato, Princess Urduja and Calategas, we’re calling on the Municipality of Narra to #declareSultanPeak a Critical Habitat under the Philippine Wildlife Act.

The Barangay Council of Calategas has officially approved and signed its resolution expressing strong support for the proposed establishment of Sultan Peak “Kensad” as a Critical Habitat.

And with this, THE SUPPORT AND ENDORSEMENT OF ALL THREE BARANGAYS ARE NOW COMPLETE! 💚

This is a meaningful step forward in our conservation journey, made stronger by the shared commitment of local communities and leaders to protect Sultan Peak for generations to come.

🌿𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗸!

Meet 𝘕𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴, a Palawan-endemic pitcher plant and a remarkable part of the forest’s intricate web of life. 🪴✨

More than just a carnivorous plant, this species helps regulate insect populations, support nutrient cycling, and provide habitat for other organisms—playing an important role in keeping its unique forest ecosystem thriving.

But this incredible species is Critically Endangered under PCSD Resolution No. 23-967, with deforestation posing a major threat to its survival. 🌳⚠️

Through Saving Sultan Peak’s Treasures, we’re working toward the declaration of Sultan Peak as a Critical Habitat—helping safeguard this species and the many others that call these forests home. 💚

Big thanks to @rainforesttrust for supporting our work to conserve Sultan Peak and its incredible biodiversity! 🙌💚

📌 Correction: We would like to clarify that the species featured in our original post was incorrectly identified as Nepenthes leonardoi. After consulting with our academic partner, Palawan State University, which provided and prepared the original data/report, the species has been confirmed to be Nepenthes palawanensis. We stand corrected and sincerely apologize for the error and any confusion it may have caused. 🌿💚 taken in Narra by @centreforsustainabilityph

Hi! We are Luuc and Sofie and we are studying International Development Management at University of Applied Science, Van Hall Larenstein Netherlands. We have come to Palawan to do our internship for the second year of our study. We are looking most forward to learning more about the community, the new environment and the experience of doing our internship abroad. While we are here in the Philippines, our goals are to engage with the communities here and participate in research, learn more about the differences in cultures and gain knowledge in nature conservation. We are really looking forward to do our internship at CS!
