Introducing Centre Stage Service Dogs, Benson! Benson is a male, yellow lab from the wonderful Atlas Labradors LLC @the_atlas_labs (which is also where we got superstar Astro)!

Benson will be training to hopefully become a diabetic alert dog for one of our accepted applicants. Thank you to everyone who donated to our naming fundraiser, we got some great recommendations, and most importantly raised money to help support our mission of training these wonderful dogs!

Follow along @centrestageservicedogs to watch him grow up! Right now he’s settling in and learning all about his new home, but pretty soon the adventures will begin.

Have anything you want to see from the training process? Let us know below! Swipe for a puppy photo outtake

A big welcome to Astro as the first official Centre Stage Dog Training program pup! Astro came home yesterday and will be training to *hopefully* become a diabetic alert dog. I look forward to sharing his puppy raising and scent work journey and can’t wait to watch him grow up and learn about the world. For now, he’s settling in at home for his first couple days and getting to know us as his new family before socialization about the world begins🪐🌙

Does it surprise you that as a professional trainer I don't enjoy walking my dogs together when I'm alone?
My dogs walks are for them to sniff, get exercise, and interact with their world. While I absolutely prioritize training including leash skills and engagement, our walks don't look like a structured heel. My dogs walk VERY differently, so walking them together ends up being tangled leashes, compromises, and sometimes a whole lot of frustration trying to get everyone to adapt. And while we can do it, and do it well, I find it much more enjoyable for them and for me to walk them separately if I'm doing the walks!

Just a little reminder that it's a green flag to have a trainer that learns from other trainers, refers to other trainers, and prioritizes continuing education!
Just like most fields, people specialize in different areas, and you can't know it all. One of my favorite parts of training is taking classes with my own dogs, being mentored by trainers, going to conferences, taking courses, etc..
This is definitely something I would prioritize when looking for a trainer!

"Working hard are they?" this is something I hear often when the public sees dogs in training out practicing settling or working. But they are working hard!
So what's actually happening when we go out to practice settling? It may look like I'm just having a coffee, but we are working hard on Benson's foundation of being able to neutrally and calmly hang out in a variety of environments. This is a key skill for a service dog. They need to be comfortable to settle for long periods in different environments, ignore distractions around them or on the ground, and still be able to task for their handler. So while it may look like they're just lying there, they're doing a whole lot!!

Come along with Benson for his morning!
As a service dog in training, every morning looks a little bit different. We always start with going outside, some pets and parades, and breakfast. I usually try to get in a short 5 minute training session around meal times and after that the day switches around based on my work schedule! Today Benson got to come on a quick outing, have a play with friends, and then take a nice nap for three hours until I got back home! I love our early morning routine of some training before the day gets busy

Join my six month old puppy to visit the Scarecrows on Main display in our town!
This is one of my favorite fall outings and while I'd love to walk around the entire town with him, my priority is setting him up for success.
For us this looks like starting with a small area, keeping the outing short and fun, and going at a quieter time.
We will definitely be back to check out some of the other scarecrows throughout the month!

When will my service dog in training stop getting treats? The short answer is... he won't.
We don't suddenly stop getting paid once we finish training for our jobs. Service dogs are working and absolutely deserve every bit of reinforcement they receive.
While his reward frequency will change as he gets older and his skills become more proofed and generalized, and he won't be reliant on treats, he will absolutely always be rewarded for his work!

Join Benson for a scent work session practicing identifying low and high blood sugars!
Right now we are working on building all the good feelings and confidence around identifying samples that will be in his 'target range' as a working diabetic alert dog. This means lots of consistent practice, generalization, and a whole lot of puppy parties.
These dogs never fail to amaze me!!

Obedience, public access, tasks, big adventures, and all the sharing on social media can cloud what is really important at this age.
The most important thing is building engagement, bond, and enjoyment of the work, which comes from having fun with the handler!
Whether this includes some toy play, movement in rewards, or puppy parties, remember to have fun with your pup and enjoy the outings.
The next steps will come, I promise.
