The Tarantula Guard is all about control, pressure, and forcing the reaction you want. 🕷️

Once that arm gets extended and their posture starts breaking, the armbar is right there. Control the sleeve, keep the tension, create the angle, and attack before they can recover.

Tarantula Guard isn’t just a control position—it’s a trap. 🕷️

Once you break their posture, isolate the arm, and keep that sleeve controlled, the triangle becomes one of the cleanest attacks available. The guard creates the angle, the grips limit their escape, and the triangle is waiting when they try to fight their way out.

Control first. Create the reaction. Then attack.

Everyone thinks the person on the bottom is losing.

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, that’s often where the strategy begins.

While most people panic under pressure, we teach our students to breathe, think, and solve problems when life gets difficult.

The mats become a classroom.

Children learn confidence instead of fear.

Adults replace stress with discipline.

Families build a community that pushes each other to become better every day.

You don’t need experience.
You don’t need to be athletic.
You just need the courage to take the first step.

Because every black belt…
started exactly where you are today.

De La Riva is one of my favorite—and one of the most dynamic guards in Jiu-Jitsu. I love how it seamlessly connects to multiple open guard systems, giving you endless options.

One of my go-to attacks comes when my opponent is off-balanced to the inside… that’s where the magic happens. 🔺🔥

Today we’re breaking down one of the most effective guard attacks in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — turning the De La Riva guard into a tight triangle finish.

It all starts with off-balancing your opponent.
Control the ankle, extend your leg, and rotate them until they’re forced to post their hands on the mat.

💡 Key Detail:
Pull the ankle tight to your hamstring so they only have 3 points of contact — now they’re vulnerable.

From there:
➡️ Foot goes to the hip
➡️ Opposite leg shoots between their arms
➡️ As they try to recover… you snap the triangle into place

Now finish strong:
👊 Kids: squeeze your knees tight
👊 Adults: pull the head down for a faster tap

This is a perfect example of how control → off-balance → attack wins every time.

📍 Come train with us and learn how to turn small advantages into submissions.

🖤 First Stripe on the Black Belt
March 19, 2021 ➡️ July 9, 2025

It took me 4 ½ years of consistent training, teaching, and growth to earn my first stripe on the black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A journey that started decades ago has now reached another important marker.

This stripe isn’t just about time—it represents countless hours on the mat, injuries pushed through, students taught, and an ongoing obsession with mastering the craft. I’m incredibly grateful to my professor @hectorvasquezbjj and the team at @alliancelv_cobrinhabjj @cephas_bjj who continue to sharpen me, push me, and hold me accountable.

⸻

👊🏽 What It’s Like as a Black Belt Running My Own Academy

Being a black belt doesn’t mean I have all the answers—it means I’ve learned how to keep asking the right questions.

Running my own academy has been one of the most fulfilling and humbling responsibilities of my life.
	•	I’m no longer just a student—I’m a leader, a mentor, and a protector of the culture.
	•	Every class I teach reminds me that the art keeps evolving, and that I have to evolve with it.
	•	My students don’t just learn technique—they learn discipline, confidence, and how to handle adversity.

Watching them grow has been just as rewarding as earning my own stripes.

⸻

🙏🏽 Thank you to every single person who’s rolled with me, believed in me, challenged me, or showed up to train—whether for a class, a comp, or just life. This stripe belongs to all of you too.

We keep going. We keep learning. We keep leading.

🔥 Lasso Guard Season — Let’s Fix Your Game.

This season, we’re diving deep into the Lasso Guard — not just how to play it, but how to weaponize it. And today’s focus? How to punish opponents who step up on the outside of your head.

⸻

🎯 Rolling Armbar from Deep Lasso Hook

Once you’ve already established your lasso grip, and your opponent posts up on the outside of your head (common pass attempt or pressure stack), it’s your time to attack.

⸻

💡 Step-by-Step Breakdown:

1️⃣ Thread the Deep Lasso Under the Knee
	•	Take your lasso leg and weave it under the back of their kneecap.
✅ This locks their posture and keeps them tethered to you.

2️⃣ Square Your Hips
	•	Don’t stay angled. Hip escape and square up so your torso faces them. This sets up the transition and gives you power.

3️⃣ Pass the Sleeve Across
	•	Take your grip and pass their arm to your opposite side shoulder, forcing them to post or shift their weight forward.

4️⃣ Launch the Rolling Armbar
	•	Throw your lasso leg high over their back like you’re climbing.
	•	Your free leg posts and lifts the hips.
	•	Hug their arm tight to your chest — elbow deep.

5️⃣ Shin Behind the Neck
	•	Slide your shin behind their neck to break posture and control the spin.

6️⃣ Barrel Roll for the Finish
	•	Rotate hard and spiral under.
	•	Let gravity pull your opponent into your armbar trap.

⸻

🧠 Pro Tip:

“The deeper your lasso, the deadlier your armbar. Don’t just control posture — collapse it.” taken in Cephas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by @cephas_bjj

💡 Trouble Sweeping Combat Base from Lasso? Try This Hybrid Instead.

When your opponent drops into combat base, it shuts down the classic Lasso sweep options. You lose leverage. Your hips get jammed. And your off-balancing power gets neutralized.

👉 But there’s a solution: Switch your guard hybrid.

⸻

🌀 Lasso ➤ De La Riva + Spider Hybrid

Instead of forcing the lasso, shift to this combination for better angles and dynamic sweeps.

⸻

🔧 Setup Breakdown:

1️⃣ Remove the Lasso
	•	Clear your leg and hip escape out slightly to reset your angle.

2️⃣ Insert Your De La Riva Hook
	•	Your outside leg threads behind their knee with the foot curled around their far hip.
✅ Stay tight to the leg — no lazy hooks.

3️⃣ Spider the Near-Side Arm
	•	Foot on the biceps or grip-breaking wrist control on the lead arm.

4️⃣ Use Your Knee (The “Keg”) to Off-Balance
	•	Lift your knee behind their far hamstring or thigh while tugging the spider arm and pulling their weight forward.

⸻

⚔️ From Here You Can:
	•	✅ Hit a classic tripod sweep
	•	✅ Spin under into a Kiss of the Dragon
	•	✅ Come up for a single leg
	•	✅ Enter deep lasso or reverse De La Riva if they re-posture

⸻

🧠 Mindset Key:

“Adapt the guard to the base. Don’t force what’s failing — flow into what fits.”

Combat base is defensive. But with the right hybrid, you can turn it into an offensive opportunity.

⸻

🎥 Watch this transition in action — hybrid guards are the new wave.

🔥 Spider-Lasso Guard: The Open Guard Hybrid You Need 🔥

If you’re serious about developing a complete open guard game, you can’t skip Spider-Lasso. It blends two of the most powerful guards in modern Jiu-Jitsu into a high-control hybrid that’s perfect for off-balancing, sweeping, and transitioning to submissions.

⸻

🧠 Why Spider + Lasso?
	•	Lasso Guard locks down one side of your opponent’s body, limiting their movement and breaking posture.
	•	Spider Guard extends and controls the other arm using foot-on-biceps pressure.
	•	Together? You create maximum tension and minimal space for your opponent to move.

⸻

🛠️ Basic Setup:

1️⃣ Start with Double Sleeve Control
	•	Feet on the hips or biceps, depending on distance.

2️⃣ Insert the Lasso
	•	Choose your dominant control side and thread your leg deep around their arm.
✅ Toes go behind their triceps or armpit — stay active.

3️⃣ Spider Leg Goes to the Biceps
	•	On the opposite arm, place your foot on their bicep with a slight bend in your knee.
✅ Keep your hips mobile — don’t just lay flat. taken in Cephas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by @cephas_bjj

🔥 Lasso Guard – Your First Fundamental Sweep 🔥
When you’re diving into open guard, Lasso Guard should absolutely be one of the first you master. Why? Because it gives you control, off-balancing mechanics, and seamless transitions into sweeps and submissions.

Let’s break down one of the foundational Lasso sweeps — a scissor-style chop that works at all levels.

⸻

🛠️ Step-by-Step: The Lasso Scissor Sweep

1️⃣ Establish Your Base
	•	Start in open guard, with both feet on the hips and double sleeve control.
	•	Hip escape out slightly to one side to make room for your lasso entry.

2️⃣ Insert the Lasso
	•	Take your top leg (same side as their sleeve you’re holding) and wrap it around their arm.
	•	Your toes should hook behind their armpit or rest against the front of their shoulder.
✅ This controls posture and rotation — key for sweep success.

3️⃣ Set the Sweep Leg
	•	Your outside leg (non-lasso leg) drops flat to the mat.
	•	Keep it fleshed out and extended, slightly off to the side like a scissor blade.

4️⃣ Chop & Cut
	•	With your lasso leg pulling and your bottom leg chopping, hit a simultaneous scissor sweep motion.
	•	Think of it like cutting their base out from under them — the lasso pulls their posture down while the bottom leg sweeps across their thigh.

5️⃣ Follow Through
	•	As they fall, keep the sleeve grip tight, come up to mount or knee-on-belly.
	•	Control the transition so they can’t scramble back.

⸻

🧠 Key Concepts:
	•	Toes behind the armpit or shoulder = control – never let your lasso be lazy or loose.
	•	The bottom leg isn’t passive – it’s an active blade that cuts their base.
	•	Sweep works best when your opponent is standing upright or posturing up.

⸻

✅ Tips for Success:
	•	If your opponent drives their weight down, use the lasso collar drag or switch to De La Riva.
	•	Use the lasso leg to constantly off-balance your partner, even before the sweep attempt.
	•	Drill slowly first — the coordination of pulling and chopping is the trickiest part. taken in Cephas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by @cephas_bjj
