COA Podcast Episode 15. On Mapping and Low Arousal Activism with CSAM

@csam.work in conversation with @markusmiessen, @cerreyes and @ena.kukic discussing how alternative forms of mapping and storytelling can question established planning narratives and create space for different voices, values, and ways of seeing the city.

Centrum för studier av markanvändning (CSAM @csam.work) challenges current models of urban development and the narratives that sustain them, using community engagement and art as tools for investigation. By engaging artists to interrogate the unjust allocation of urban resources, CSAM visualizes how major geopolitical shifts play out in local contexts. Founded in 2019 by long-time partners Victoria Percovich Gutierrez (economist), Åsa Bjerndell (architect), and Karl Landin (urban planner), our practice has grown out of work as architects and community organizers, and curating talks, exhibitions, and artistic interventions.

COA in Barcelona | The Esch Clinics field trip

From 31 August to 2 September, @culturesofassembly team @markusmiessen @ena.kukic and yours truly travelled to Barcelona for three days of conversations, site visits, and encounters around urban transformation, housing, public space, architecture, and new forms of political and civic practice.

A huge thank you to everyone who generously shared their time, knowledge, projects, and experiences with us: @janetsanz , @xavimatilla , @josepmariamontaner , Ethel Baraona Pohl - @dpr_barcelona , Carles Baiges - @lacolarq , @ivetgasol - @ciertoestudio , Joseph Maria Borrell and Xavier Gracia from the great @impsol_amb team, @aitorcarr @barcelonaencomu , @tomeuramis @flexo_arquitectura and our comrades of @terrranova and @llibreria.finestres

From the transformation of the Consell de Cent to La Borda or new models of public housing at Les Glories or Sant Boi with IMPSOL. The trip offered an intense and inspiring overview of how architecture, the administration, and urban policy can trigger change and support the commons.

Beyond the projects, what made the trip special were the conversations with beloved friends and colleagues, researchers, institutions, and practitioners working across different scales and visions. It was very special to be there on the 10th year anniversary of the #SuperIllas project. 🌱🫶🏽

Thank you to Janet Sanz and dpr-barcelona for your generous advice, contacts, and support in making this field trip possible. Looking forward to the new exchanges that are coming this fall.

Moltes gràcies Barcelona, we'll be back soon!

I’m honoured to moderate the roundtable "Territorial Politics" at @uia2026bcn Barcelona, bringing together the work of Chiara Oggioni, Yi Sun, Víctor Cano-Ciborro @vcanociborro , Ilaria Iacconi Iambrenghi @ilariaiacconiiambrenghi , and Aga Kuś.

Together, we will discuss how research and design can move beyond observation and representation toward accountability, reciprocity, and collective transformation. Through experiences ranging from citizens assemblies in Esch to migration routes to the Canary Islands, from women's labour at Sham Shi Po in Hong Kong to everyday forms of resistance, urban justice, and care. Our session will ask what it means to work with underrepresented communities rather than merely study them.

If space is political, then our research is never entirely neutral. The challenge is not only to understand territories but to become responsible to the people who make our work possible.

The graffiti illustrates the dilemma and says: "My neighbourhood is not your final Master’s thesis” via @undesgraciat it was spotted in Vallcarca, Barcelona and directly poses the question: Who is knowledge produced for? And who benefits from it?

This powerful reminder will critically guide our conversation.

See you at UIA 2026 Barcelona

Tuesday, June 30
15:15–16:30
CCIB – Stage 7

Thanks @marionabene for the kind invitation

One last time together in the green pool 💚

A few moments from Imperfect Assemblies’ closing event on Wednesday, with Markus Miessen, César Reyes Nàjera, Janet Sanz and Finn Williams.

Over the past three months, Imperfect Assemblies has grown through 15 events, bringing together voices, practices, and perspectives from around the world.

Through conversations, encounters, and contributions, international and local artists, grassroots movements, and critical voices have met and engaged with one another. Together, we have opened up important discussions about how we shape the architectures of democracy – and who gets to be a part of them.

Thank you to everyone who took part, contributed, and made this possible.

The final event was made possible in collaboration with The Royal Danish Academy @kglakademi

🗓️ 27.5.26
⏰ 16:30-19:00
🎟️ 150 DKK (100 DKK for CAFx Community Members)

How do shared spaces and community goods and initiatives—the commons—gain recognition in today’s cities? While laws and policies often define what counts, many meaningful initiatives grow informally—through local efforts, mutual support, and long-term commitment.

At a time when political polarisation narrows public debate, this session asks how diverse grassroots practices can be recognised and supported rather than ignored or dismissed. Framed by Markus Miessen and César Reyes Nájera, and featuring Richard Sennett, Janet Sanz, and Finn Williams, the conversation highlights how cities can open up space for different ways of living together and legitimise a wider range of voices and experiences.

Second session of the “Labo de Terre” at @vewa.lu organised by @iwwerliewen and @dkollektiv .

A great opportunity to get our hands dirty and explore, through a convivial, collective format, the basic techniques of building with earth.

From my bachelor’s exploration of vernacular strategies in Guatemala, to my PhD research on vegetable fibres and lime mortars, this has been a recurring interest throughout my professional path.

Could this be the beginning of a new chapter in Luxembourg? Who knows…

But after two sessions, guided so generously by @carineoberweis and Erick, and thanks to the great energy of the participants, it feels like we want more of this!

The red soil—extracted, transformed, and often left polluted—lies at the foundation of this country’s prosperous steel industry. What if it could now become a subject of study and action toward healing and restitution? Construction is, after all, an extractive activity. But it also holds the potential to shift, by embracing materials with lower environmental impact and techniques that strengthen collective practices.

I still remember the excitement of seeing life blossom on land once levelled with adobe walls in the Guatemalan countryside. A similar feeling came back when entering VEWA and noticing a small stem growing from the compressed earth walls we had built together during the first session!

🌱👇🏽👌🏽

New opportunity to explore the possibilities of building with earth:

The Danish election is approaching. If you’re still unsure who to vote for, or simply want to learn more about democracy and why it matters, come by our exhibition Imperfect Assemblies. 💚

Imperfect Assemblies: Towards New Civic Infrastructures explores how democracy isn’t just something that happens at the ballot box, but something shaped through spaces, conversations, and encounters between people. The exhibition invites you into face-to-face discussions and rethinks how we participate in our cities and local communities.

The election is March 24, but you can visit the exhibition Monday–Friday every week from 10:00–16:00.

We thank @dreyersfond, @statenskunstfond, @realdaniadk and @koebenhavnskommune for making the exhibition possible. taken in Copenhagen Architecture Forum by @cerreyes

As part of Imperfect Assemblies, we’ve created a small book collection called the Friction Library. It brings together books that explore democracy, participation, and the tensions that shape collective life.

Drop by, spend some time with the books, and explore the ideas behind the exhibition.
