BANILA CO CIZ PURITY
If you wear makeup or sunscreen it is so important that you take it all off with a first-step cleanser. It can be micellar water, or any form of an oil cleanser. I like the Banila Co CIZ Purity because it comes in the solid form but as soon as it touches your skin melts into the most luxurious oil. I wear a lot of waterproof mascara because of my naturally asian, short and poker-straight lashes and this oil cleanser removes it all easily.
.
.
SNAIL POWER ESSENCE
I only use this on any acne wounds that need a bit of help overnight in healing. I find it’s not really hydrating enough to use all over but is fantastic at getting rid of those red spots!
.
.
EFFACLAR DUO[+]
I smooth this all over my face before putting on my moisturiser. I love how it keeps my skin nice and matte, controlling my overly dramatic natural oils!

This is my morning routine for acne-fighting and prevention! 🌞
.
.
#cosrx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser
#itsskin Power 10 Formula VC Effector with Vitamin C
#benton Aloe BHA Toner
#avene Skin Recovery Cream
#larocheposay La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Ultra-Light Fluid .
.
STEP 1
CosRx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser - I only use this on days when I feel like I wake up with a really oily face. If not, then I just rinse with water. Love the tea tree oil in this which has anti-bacterial properties.
.
.
STEP 2
It’s Skin Power 10 Formula VC Effector with Vitamin C - This is the current Vitamin C serum I’m trying - It’s non-irritating and has a pleasant scent but I’m not sure how much it is doing. I usually apply this and wait 15 minutes (go and make some breakfast) before moving onto the next step
.
.
STEP 3
Benton Aloe BHA Toner - The amount of salicylic acid in this isn’t high enough for acne-fighting action. I use it more for the hydration from the aloe vera but … maybe the salicylic acid has micro-exfoliant effects? I haven’t noticed
.
.
STEP 4
Avene Skin Recovery Cream - two words - Holy Grail. This moisturiser is the ONLY moisturiser that doesn’t break me out.
.
.
STEP 5
La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Ultra-Light Fluid - one of the few sunscreens that you can readily buy from an Australia drug store that sinks in fast and non-greasy that is also SPF50+. Only downside is the strong alcohol scent.
.
.
Please remember YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary. This works for me but may not work for you. The beauty and fun of skincare is finding your own unique routine! Don’t give up! Please DM me if you have any questions at all!

If you have sensitive AND acne-prone skin, you’ll know it is a nightmare. Trying to find a product that you’re not allergic AND one that doesn’t break you out will prove to be a sure test of your patience. Trust me, I know 😅
.
.
Acne is so difficult to treat because it can present with a myriad of symptoms that need to be addressed such as dehydrated skin, redness, pain, swelling, excess oil production, wound healing, scarring, bacterial overgrowth and fungal overgrowth.
.
.
In my acne journey, I did find a product that contains a cocktail of ingredients designed to actually target a lot of the different symptoms:
🔹Glycerin - hydration
🔹Niacinamide - anti-inflammatory - soothing and redness, reduces hyperpigmentation from acne scars
🔹Procerad™ - La Roche Posay’s patented ceramide technology that prevents brown spots before they form
🔹LHA + Salicylic acid - gentle exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and prevent clogging
🔹Zinc PCA + Silica - anti-bacterial and sebum regulation
🔹Piroctone Olamine - anti-fungal that is effective against Malassezia species (for fungal acne)
.
.
I would treat this as a serum step and add it in after toning but before moisturising. Since it has a mattifying effect, I found it not to be hydrating enough for my dehydrated skin so needed an extra bit of moisture. It definitely kept my overly excited sebum glands under control though! My skin’s oiliness dialed itself down a few notches while I was using this!

Who said oils were bad for acne-prone skin?? 💁
One of the main reasons using oils is so good for our skin is because our skin composition naturally contains oils anyway. A facial oil is a fantastic moisturiser option because you can easily reduce the amount of ingredients you’re putting on your face!
.
.
Choosing the type of oil carefully is important because different oils have different properties. The first thing to look at is the chemical composition of the oil - linoleic acid vs. oleic acid content. If you have severely dry skin and need a luxurious moisturiser, go for an oil high in oleic acid. If you have oily, acne-prone skin - a higher linoleic content will benefit you more especially as acne-prone skin has been found to have lower natural levels of linoleic acid. Also, look for a high quality, cold-pressed facial oil in light-protected packaging to ensure it stays fresh for longer.
.
.
TAMANU OIL
Great for acne-prone skin because:
Linoleic vs. Oleic acid: balanced
Anti-inflammatory (reduces redness)
Anti-microbial (keep the pesky acne-causing bacteria controlled)
Skin regeneration (wound healing)
Scar healing
.
.
This is the MooGoo Cold-Pressed Tamanu Oil. This one is a fantastic product because it is cold-pressed for quality, and in an airtight pump bottle that is also light-protected to make sure it stays fresh longer. And if you wanted to support a family-owned Australian producer, the MooGoo range started on a dairy farm in Perth! (I’m in no way affiliated with MooGoo, just love their products!)

Hail the Snail! 🐌
Although the use of snail mucus secretions (sounds gross right?) for skin conditions dates back to Hippocrates and the Ancient Greeks who used it for inflammation, the mechanism of action of snail mucin is still not quite clear. More recent research has found that it could be due to the abundant antioxidants found in snail secretions but more studies need to be done.
.
.
Anecdotally, snail has been praised again and again for its SUPER healing powers. There is some scientific evidence to back this as snail mucin has been shown to stimulate fibroblast activity. Fibroblasts are cells that make collagen, other fibres and extracellular matrix which are all essential ingredients for the speedy healing of a wound!

.

Honey is another fantastic ingredient for acne-prone skin, especially if you have dry or dehydrated acne-prone skin like mine. Keep reading to find out why!
.
.
1| Humectant - can attract and retain moisture in the skin due to the sugars
2| Anti-microbial - high sugar content and hydrogen peroxide produced through enzymatic activity can act as an anti-microbial to kill acne-causing bacteria
3| Anti-inflammatory - can reduce redness and noticeability of acne
4| Contain acids - possible mild exfoliant effect to reveal new skin
5| Some antioxidant effects - skin protective
.
.
You can easily buy raw honey from the supermarket to use as a face mask. Simply wash your face, apply the honey all over and leave for at least a few minutes, then wipe off with a damp washcloth. In terms of anti-microbial activity - there doesn’t appear to be a difference between raw honey and pasteurised honey however, manuka honey (which is made from the nectar of the Manuka [tea] tree) may have more anti-fungal activity.
.
.
If this is too messy for you, honey is also available as commercial products. Some brands to check out include: Benton, CosRx, Lee Ji Ham, Scinic, Banila Co and of course, Papa Recipe with my favourite sheet masks!
