Today's activity with @whale_speak at the lighthouse included testing the underwater speaker, setting up the theodolite, setting up the wireless speaker system so we can monitor the @cetrestec hydrophone from inside the lighthouse, and enjoying a delicious pizza dinner by @jackmezzone

This old @cetrestec C54 hydrophone that I built for Dr. Fred Sharpe roughly 20 years ago is still going strong!
I'm currently in Petersburg, Alaska to assist Dr. Sharpe and his team from WhaleSpeak and Whale SETI with their humpback whale communication research. Look for live streams from Five Finger Lighthouse in the coming days.

Cetacean Research Technology hydrophones through the years. Two of these were chewed on by tapirs in the Amazon jungle. One was swallowed by a Steller sea lion and recovered. One had been deployed for years in Colvos passage near Seattle. One was a very early prototype. All have their own story.

Saw this cargo ship coming into Elliott Bay and spewing black smoke as we were watching four Bigg's orcas feeding on something they'd just killed. Aren't there environmental laws that are supposed to prevent (or at least penalize) these kinds of polluters?

The very first product Joe Olson made after starting Cetacean Research Technology was a saddle suction cup with a Gummy Bear gelatin candy release mechanism for Rod Hobbs of the National Marine Mammal Lab to attach a radio transmitter to a beluga. While there is a lot of nostalgia invoked in making suction cups, hydrophone design and manufacture is the primary focus of our company. Therefore, we're extremely happy to announce that Applied Ocean Sciences is now building and selling our suction cup designs! Please contact @appliedoceansci if you need suction cups.

Introducing the new managing director of Cetacean Research Technology!
Adam Sniff is the engineer now in charge of day-to-day operations of the company and Joe Olson will continue to be available for technical assistance. Please give a whale of a welcome to Adam!
This is a very exciting time and we anticipate that by early April lead times for our #hydrophones will be significantly reduced, with several more models routinely being held in stock.

Thinking of Ken Balcomb on this winter solstice. by @cetrestec

Today, the world has lost one of the strongest, most passionate voices for the whales and dolphins. A man whose heart was as big as a whale's. Had it not been for Ken Balcomb's research of the Southern Resident orcas using photo ID techniques starting in the early 1970s, many of us world not be doing what we do today to study and protect these animals. Ken not only studied the orcas and other whales and dolphins, but arguably more importantly he was a steadfast advocate for their wellbeing. Whether it be fighting to remove dams to provide more salmon for the Southern Resident orcas to eat, or convincing the Navy that mid frequency active sonar led to the stranding and deaths of beaked whales he witnessed outside his research station in the Bahamas, or stopping the navy from using the same sonar after witnessing minke whales and orcas flee from the sounds outside the Center for Whale Research on San Juan Island, Ken was always saying what needed to be said. His shoes will be difficult to fill and it is up to us all to continue his work. Our deepest condolences to Ken's family.
