Oliver Tree gave me advice I’ll never forget.

The year was 2019. I was backstage with my friend @abhithenomad who was opening for Oliver on his “Ugly is Beautiful” tour.

I met Oliver right after he finished his first-ever interview with @billboard and we got to hang out for about an hour before the show.

I’ll never forget the advice he gave me that day:

“People get off track because they take life too seriously. They treat everything like it’s life or death. What I’ve learned is that life only really starts to open up once you start to treat it more like a video game. Take a risk. Try something crazy. F*ck around. Playing it safe is just a waste of your time. I try to treat every day like I’m booting up the craziest video game in the world.”

I’ve never forgotten that advice - treat life more like a video game. And honestly, I’m not sure if @totem.labs would even exist if i hadn’t heard this from him.

Oliver died in a helicopter collision yesterday in Brazil, and you know what? I think he would’ve been pretty happy with that. Not WHEN it happened (he was only 32 and had so much ahead of him) but HOW it happened. Even the fact that he was in a helicopter over the city of Rio de Janeiro confirms that he did live his life like one of the world’s craziest video games.

In a funny way, I also think he would’ve been pretty happy with the sheer absurdity of this final sentence of his own obituary from BBC: “In 2020, Oliver broke the Guinness world record for building the largest kick scooter in history at 4.16m tall and 3.13m long.”

Thank you for the lasting impact you had on my life in just one short hour @olivertree
