Learning from experience, building connections, and making the most of the MAES community! 🌍🌐

Over the past few weeks, our students have had the opportunity to learn from both alumni and peers through two events organized by the CGES Alumni and second-years.

🗣️ At our Networking Tips & Tricks session, MAES alumni Charlotte Carstens (‘20), Sam Denney (‘18), Colleen Dougherty (‘22), and Pete Giannino (‘18) shared advice on navigating Washington, D.C.’s professional scene, from networking events and think tank gatherings to LinkedIn outreach and building meaningful connections.

⛱️ At How I Spent My Summer Vacation, our second-year students shared their summer experiences with the incoming cohort, from internships at BMW and on Capitol Hill to opportunities at think tanks and organizations across Europe and the United States.

A big thank you to our amazing community for sharing their insights, experiences, and advice with the next generation of MAES students!

During his visit to Washington, D.C. and @georgetownuniversity, Secretary General of the Council of Europe @alain.berset took a moment to step beyond his day-to-day work and answer a more personal question from our students: what advice would he give to his 20-year-old self? 💭

This Monday, we’re sharing a little motivation for all the young people navigating their early twenties: stay courageous, stay curious, and keep learning. taken in Georgetown University by @cgesgeorgetown

We’re excited to announce the 2026-27 CGES Event Series: “(Il)liberal Orders: The Future of Emerging Political Systems.”

Liberty and equality have long stood at the center of European political life. Today, however, populism, revanchism, democratic backsliding, and challenges to the modern state are raising new questions about how political orders are built, contested, and transformed.

Throughout the academic year, CGES will bring together scholars and experts from across disciplines to explore the future of liberal and illiberal political systems, and what these transformations mean for Europe and beyond.

💡Mark your calendars and join us throughout the year for conversations on democracy, governance, political order, and the forces reshaping them.

Let’s enjoy conversations, new ideas and free lunches!

Having grown up in Taiwan, @clairetiunn was particularly impacted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. She sees many parallels between Taiwan and the former Soviet bloc - a shared history of authoritarianism and subsequent fight for democracy, and more recently, the threat of aggression from an autocratic neighbor.

Claire joined the MAES program to gain an institutional understanding of the EU and state-level governments and to prepare her for a career working on issues important to both the European and East Asian regions.

In order to understand the Russian and Chinese regimes, Claire enrolled in the courses “Russian Military Power”, taught by Michael Rouland, and “Chinese Military Power”, taught by Dennis Wilder. Pairing these classes aided her in understanding the military apparatus of Russia and China, which will be beneficial to her future career.

Apart from her coursework, Claire learned so much from her internships during the MAES program. Her experiences ranged from:
-the private sector: interning at @inside_ericsson in Stockholm and in D.C. through the Wallenberg International Fellowship Program
-the public sector: working as a policy advocate at JTI
- and the think tank world: interning with the China Power Project at @csis

She’s excited to be spending the summer in Latvia as a Critical Language Scholar, fully immersing herself in the Russian language! We’re so excited to see where her career takes her. by @cgesgeorgetown
