This poster is about language as survival.

“Tumoro por la Tumoro” is my dad’s direct translation of “mañana por la mañana” (“tomorrow morning”) from his first years as an immigrant in New York.

He was in that survival phase, saying yes to any work he could get. Super jobs, construction, whatever came up. In one of those moments, he ended up on the phone chasing a small contract gig with a contractor who didn’t speak Spanish. My dad barely spoke English. Two people with opposite languages, trying to make rent, trying to make a plan.

Somehow, they pieced it together: meet the next morning.

My dad’s closing line, in Spanglish:
“See you tumoro por la tumoro.”

It’s funny, but it’s also beautiful because it proves something: communication isn’t only vocabulary. It’s urgency, trust, and showing up.

He met the next morning on time. Got the job.

An agronomist back home, he kept taking whatever he could in NYC until years later he found work at Columbia University in landscape and grounds maintenance, closer to his profession.

That’s the immigrant mentality:
make a way, make it work, keep your word in order to provide. taken in New York City by @cha_go
